IGN: Sonic Adventure Review

While the upcoming Sonic Colors has a great deal of promise and Sonic 4 - Episode 1 is being developed as a return to the conventions of Sonic 2 from the Genesis era, Sonic Adventure is, in hindsight, the culmination of everything that made Sonic an also-ran to Nintendo's flagship mascot -- all (poorly aged) flash, and very little substance. Even as a curiosity, IGN would advise you give Sonic Adventure a wide berth.

Presentation - 5.0
Graphics - 6.5
SOund - 6.0
Gameplay - 3.5
Lasting Appeal - 7.0

Woww.....Sega ruined this classic

Rikitatsu5744d ago

Maybe when IGN jump into a volcano, we should follow them as well.

They are the same people who gave Godhand 3/10.. Just saying.

OneSneakyMofo5744d ago

That was the first time I began to doubt IGN as a reliable review source. The first of many... lol

Myze5744d ago

Regardless of some of IGN's missteps in many areas (there have been lots, and I don't trust their reviews either), that doesn't change the fact that this game looks terrible.

maruyuki5744d ago

and ocarina of time looks like they redid the who game for next gen...

stop giving them the benefit of the doubt

the graphics is the second highest scoring on their list

Eamon5744d ago

Shouldn't "gameplay" have gotten the highest out of the other categories?

Arnon5743d ago (Edited 5743d ago )

Do you guys read the reviews or do you just click the article, look at the score and comment? Because 1UP gave it a D (or a 5/10) for the same issues.

Quit bitching. The game of which I still love and can play anytime on my Dreamcast did not age well, especially when they had to opportunity to iron out a few kinks, and instead just increased the resolution of the game.

i dont think they ruined it. They shoulda Fixed it before giving it a newer release. All the Recent ReRelease of new games fixed some of the older problems and gave updated graphics in a way like GoWCollection in HD etc etc.

The game was good for back in the days standards but now it doesnt make the cut. I'll probably buy it though beacause i'm a big sonic fan.

Danteh5743d ago

they didn't fix anything in GoW collection, it's just that it's such a good game that it holds up even today

Sonic Adventure should have been reviewed as a 10 year old game, fuck IGN

PirateThom5744d ago

Actually, to be fair, it doesn't sound like they changed anything...

DA_SHREDDER5744d ago (Edited 5744d ago )

Exactly what I was thinking Pirate. I think that most of these gaming journalist are too spoiled for their own good to understand really what a good game is. Personally I dont care if the game has the same ol glitches and camera issues,, the game was still fantastic when it worked right. I hope they bring Phantasy Star Online, Skies of Arcadia, and Armada soon as well.

NJShadow5744d ago

If they didn't change anything, then the game is the same as it was years ago... awesome. Which means IGN no longer take fun-factor into account, one reason why so many sites are no longer reliable for good reviews. Sonic Adventure is a blast, plain and simple.

deadreckoning6665744d ago (Edited 5744d ago )

"Woww.....Sega ruined this classic"

Why..because IGN says so..LOL. And how did Sega ruin it? Its the SAME game. Thats what people wanted and thats what people got. I can guarantee that if the original versions of Sonic Adventure 2 and Shenmue popped up on PSN/XBLA...many people would buy it in droves.

Hell, I already have these games, but id re-buy them for the convenience of having them on my PS3.

Tainted Gene5743d ago

dude............ur so right.

Reibooi5744d ago

God their review system is broken.

I thought they averaged out all the various aspects scores to get the final score but it seems not.

Honestly there is really no reason giving all those other scores if they mean nothing to the final one. Just give a final score.

I personally feel they were a bit to harsh. Granted I haven't played the game in about 2 years or so. However I don't remember being that bad and by all accounts the game is the same as it was. The main issue is that they didn't enhance anything for the port. That should hurt the game but not enough for it to get a 3.5

DlocDaBudSmoka5744d ago

i went and did the averaging of the scores and ended up with a average of 5.6, so im not sure how they came to 3.5.

IHateYouFanboys5744d ago

IGN specifically state that they do NOT average out scores for the overall score, and thats a good thing.

not every category carries the same weight in how good or bad a game is. if a game has absolutely brilliant gameplay (10/10), but not the best graphics (7/10), most people would still give the game a 9-9.5/10 because its got awesome gameplay. likewise replayability - would you rate Shadow of the Colossus a 6/10 overall purely because it has no replayability? same with other classics.

its about how good the game is overall, not just the sum of its parts.

Reibooi5743d ago

@IHateYouFanboys

But see that's why it's broken. They should just not have those sections. Just have 1 overall score and done. The mere act of having sections makes it easier for people to just skip the review itself and look at the numbers. Graphics whores get their section to look at real quick.

People who just want alot of content have their section. Sound junkies have theirs and Game play has theirs. It just makes it easier to skip the text in the review. Unless it's all averaged out it should not be done the way they do it. I agree averaging it out makes it a broken system which is why having so many useless numbers is stupid. The words of the reviewer are supposed to be what matters not a number at the end and having MORE numbers at the end just makes people that much more likely to skip the review.

IHateYouFanboys5743d ago

you wont get any arguments from me.

to be perfectly honest, id be happy with NO score - just the review text. i dont even pay any attention to the score. ive bought games that got 6s and 7s, yet had more fun with them than games that got 9s and 10s.

if the reviews and videos make the game look and sound like one i would enjoy, ill buy it regardless of the score. likewise, even if a game gets 10/10, if it doesnt sound and look like a game i want to play, i wont buy it. if i get the chance to play it ill have a go, but i wont actively go and buy it without playing it.

Megaton5744d ago

I still have Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 for Dreamcast. They were never all that great. The series just doesn't translate well to 3D, no matter how many years SEGA pushed it that way.

SoapShoes5744d ago

Really? Sonic Adventure was the highest rated Sonic game of all time...

Megaton5744d ago

Not in my book. I decided to pop in SA1 after posting in here, and it just isn't all that good. The 2D games are miles ahead in terms of quality, IMO.

Marceles5744d ago (Edited 5744d ago )

Sonic Adventure was dope when it first came out, I got my Dreamcast at launch and played the hell out of that and NFL2K. If anything that was the last Sonic of the series that was done right.

SoapShoes5744d ago

Well Megaton, that's your opinion. The huge praise that these games got state otherwise... Not many Sonic games in 3D were good, but these were excellent(Sonic parts anyway).

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 5744d ago
ChronoJoe5744d ago

It's exactly the same as the original, except it sticks to 60fps (not sure if the original did, probably dropped from time to time) doesn't seem worse to me.

Sounds like the major gripe is the controls... I never ever, thought they were a particularly poor aspect of Sonic Adventure, the camera never caused me too much trouble either. Hell, the dreamcast didn't even have dual analogue so you didn't really get much control over the camera.

Blaze9295744d ago

yet it scored a 3.5 overall? 3.5 games 'dont' last. If it lasts, that means it not that bad of a game to begin with. this is why people need to drop IGN

otherZinc5744d ago

P**** O* S**T! (P.O.S)

I wouldnt trust sh** they have to say.

I'm buying it for both my 360 & sons 360.

gtamike5744d ago

it's a download for me :)

Tikicobra5744d ago

I believe them that this game sucks, but I can't tell if they think it's aged poorly or if it's just a bad port.

bjornbear5744d ago

I expected a much better review...even from IGN...=| very disappointing

KratosGirI5744d ago

It seems like a direct port of SA:DX, which was still good.

lightningsax5744d ago (Edited 5744d ago )

That's interesting. There's not much in here that actually talks about the emulation quality or changes from the original - I think IGN had the gamer that hadn't played Sonic Adventure in mind (aka the kiddies). It makes sense from that angle - if you hand Sonic Adventure to a Modern Warfare 2-playing 14 year old (Rated M for mature, amirite), they'll compare it to other games they're playing right now. There's no "aw, wasn't that so cool back in the day? This was super sweet technology in '99!" nostalgia to it. There's just Sega flailing around at a 3D Sonic. Which, I might add, was better than most 3D Sonics that came after it (and before it, I mean, Sonic 3D Blast was definitely worse).

It's becoming infinitely understandable whom IGN's intended review audience is, and it's not well-seasoned gamers. Which is sad, because I think there are a few people on that site that have great things to say... they just can't say them because of a bottom-line company policy.

I understand that none of the menus are any good, and everything's just cobbled together from the Dreamcast version, but hey, that's emulation for you, and I'm glad Sega brought an un-broken version to modern stores. Not that I believe it needs a different score - I don't care - but they're not addressing issues important to the old Dreamcast-playing crew. How does it feel on modern controllers? How's the sound (Skies of Arcadia's port to the Gamecube brought awful, tinny sound along with it, did the same thing happen here)?

Also, if these are just accurate Dreamcast ports, do we really need these full reviews without discussing the repercussions of it being on a different system?

Now if they only would put Jet Grind(Set) Radio on there...

The 7 Best Sonic the Hedgehog Games: Racing through Time

Sonic the Hedgehog has a long and turbulent history in videogames, but which are the best games featuring the blue bur?

Rebel_Scum851d ago

Generations over Mania? Please… Generations doesnt have any new ideas in the levels/bosses.

Also a top 7 of Sonic games shouldn’t have any 3D crap and contain at least one of the 8-bit titles.

Sonic CD getting snubbed is weird. Number 1 is definitely interchangable between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Snookies12851d ago

Nothing wrong with putting Generations over Mania. Generations had a lot more to it. Mania was just a bit too short, despite how amazing it was. They're both top-tier Sonic games though.

Profchaos851d ago (Edited 851d ago )

I don't think mania was to short given 1,2,3, knuckles were between 1 and 3 hours long.

Mania was 5 hours roughly

However i say the originals feel more repayable because they are so short

Profchaos851d ago (Edited 851d ago )

The 8 bit games were pretty bad overall do you mean the 16 bit ones

Rebel_Scum851d ago

Nope. Sonic 1 & 2 on the master system were great. Dont confuse these with the game gear versions either.

Profchaos851d ago

Top 7 for me
7 cd
6 mania
5 Frontiers
4 sonic 3
3 sonic 1
2 sonic and knuckles
1 sonic 2

persona4chie851d ago

Sometimes I feel like the Sonic Advanced games just didn’t exist with how much it’s always forgotten 😭

Chocoburger850d ago

Even as a Sonic fan, I didn't really care for those games, and getting the Chaos Emeralds were freakin' horrible. Even with an emulator and save states, I didn't have the desire to try. I also didn't like most of the levels or bosses either. Unfortunately, DiMPs aren't good at making Sonic games.

If I have to read another one of these lists that contains the sentence "The game that started it all" I'm gonna go nuts.

And when it comes to fan favourite zones in Sonic 3 (he mentioned Hydro City, Marble Garden and Launch Base), I'd replace Launch base and Marble Garden with Ice Cap zone. Never heard anyone refer to the others as favourites.

NJShadow1431d ago (Edited 1431d ago )

I sorta' stopped caring about this list when I saw Sonic Spinball (a genuinely great game) ranked lower than some of the noted atrocities.

Pyrofire951431d ago

Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed is still my favorite kart racer.
I've never really been able to play online tho. D:
Can't even play Team Sonic Racing online cause the servers are broken and don't queue people together.
P.S. This is such a random list. I really don't agree with it. Maybe this really is how they rank it but them just seems odd personally.
