Valve: Gap Between Good And Great Programmers Will Widen Next-Gen

While the qualities of what separates a good game from a great one are up for debate, Valve president Gabe Newell feels that due to the increased reliance on multicore architectures, studios with programmers that go above and beyond to push the technical envelope — like Crytek, id, and of course Valve — will enjoy an even greater advantage over the competition than they currently do.

Half-Life 2: Episode 2, L4D2 etc... all look like old gen crap!
Is this dube going to take advantage of the PS3's awesome power? Is his next game going to look better than Uncharted 2 or Heavy Rain?

I serious doubt that.
Lazy Valve as so lazy they refuse to make anew next gen engine or use anyone elses...

Valve is a great company, but they are not a groundbreaking company, nor have they been since Half Life 2.

Half Life 2 popularized physics (beyond simple ragdoll effects) and made them matter. HL2 also popularized the "gravity gun" idea, which is imitated in many other games. HL2 was - and still is - a groundbreaking game.

However, their recent games such as Left 4 Dead and Portal were not their own ideas. Left 4 Dead comes from fan-made mods of Half Life and Half Life 2. Portal was the project of a couple college students. Maybe I am incorrect, but I believe that Team Fortress and Counterstrike were also fan-made mods in some way. The graphics of Valve's game also leave a lot to be desired, although Portal 2 does look nice (thanks, below comment). Still, how can Valve be groundbreaking when their game ideas are not their own?

Again, Valve is a great company. But they are not as innovative or groundbreaking as they once were, and the mediocre graphics of their games is just one facet of that fact.

Shaman5760d ago

All their games run on more than 10 year old engine. They update it regulary and it looks great...just look at PORTAL 2.And their games are ALWAYS optimized, and when their new engine is ready they look and run better than almost anything out on the market.

TheIneffableBob5760d ago (Edited 5760d ago )

The zombie mod that Left 4 Dead was inspired from came from Valve themselves. They created a zombie mod for fun during the development of Counter-Strike.

Team Fortress was a mod, but the sequel is very, VERY different from its predecessor. Team Fortress 2 plays almost nothing like the original. In fact, when Team Fortress 2 was released, there was a big uproar over how different it was and the mod Fortress Forever was created in response to that.

Valve finds ideas and expands upon them and makes them extremely polished. Blizzard is not unlike Valve. Their games are not necessarily groundbreaking or original, but they are ridiculously polished and well-made.

On a good PC all the VALVe games look great.

In other news: I heart TF2 :-D

ico925760d ago

i remember playing on CSS like 4-5 years ago there was a mod called Zombie outbreak some crap like that it played a bit like the compeitive multiplayer on L4D i guess we know where the inspiration for that game came from

If u have ever seen L4D2 maxed out your UC2 would cry >_> However, UC2's character models are excellent but the updated source engine for L4D2 looks much better in many areas UC2 can't cover.

ThanatosDMC5760d ago

I have L4D2 maxed out and it doesnt look as good. What areas are you talking about??? The water in the sewers perhaps with the new campaign?

nveenio5759d ago

No Valve game looks better than Uncharted 2...not even on PC. And, even if they did, they wouldn't have the amazing 'cinematic' feel that Uncharted 2 has.

Garnett5760d ago

Can you play graphics? No? Well he MUST be talking about gameplay...

Not only that, but why even try to make good graphics on console when PC has superior graphics.

Nihilism5760d ago (Edited 5760d ago )

They are talking about programming ability, not sheer graphical power.

I have NEVER seen a game that has as many units with as complex and varied animations as the enemies in left 4 dead, all the while running at 60 frames MINIMUM while there are more than 100 units on screen all scaling terrain and reacting to each other.

The source engine is THE most optimised engine there is.

Second to that is MT Framework.

The graphics/performance/number of units renderable at a time in those 2 engines is way better than anything else out there.

If you think getting a linear game to run at 30 frames with little to no AA and with frame rate dips into the 20's is 'good programming' then you are mistaken.

L4D, and anyone who owns a PC knows that recording a video anihilates frame rates, so the graphics are turned down in this clip.

With "Slim" Gabe around, we can expect some serious widening.

But seriously, Valve has had some decent games like L4D, L4D2, but nothing ground breaking. Where is Episode 3? Where is Half Life 3? Where is the new engine, source is 6 years old!

I'd say that valve are good, but definitely not in the upper echelon of programming any more.

Resistance5760d ago

Source engine is usually updated with many new game releases. L4D's engine was higher than the source engine that powered TF2, Portal, HL2 ep.2. I'm not sure if L4D2 gave a little update on the engine tho

jaosobno5760d ago

Updated engine is nice, but nothing beats a brand new one.

Updating engine is like overclocking. Sure, you get a bit more performance, but nothing beats a brand new GPU.

bobcostus5760d ago

Why would they make a new engine, when current consoles can barely handle the new source engine at 30fps? I'm sure they will have a new engine when the next round of consoles are out.

jaosobno5759d ago

Are you implying that source engine is equally powerful like, oh let's say Killzone 2 engine or Uncharted 2 engine?

It's ancient and it shows in games. Don't pretend like you know what consoles can and can't do. PS3 brakes graphical limits with every new exclusive.

Gabe loves the Double Down from KFC...

Gabe's cholesterol count is widening also

Count5760d ago

I would've laughed at that if I were still in kindergarten.

Raikiri5760d ago (Edited 5760d ago )

whats your problem?

Its just a joke.. because you didn't laugh doesn't mean other people didn't

evrfighter5760d ago

lol wtf

you've got a problem with someone that didn't laugh at a 1st grade level joke?

Did you laugh? was it funniez? is your mommy gonna take you out for some ice cream later on today if your a good boy?

palaeomerus5760d ago

I laughed by taking a bubble.

Trroy5760d ago (Edited 5760d ago )

We can already see the differences between good and great programmers, via the quality of PS3 crossplats (and of course, exclusives).

He's correct that those programmers able to adapt to parallel concepts, like those inherent in the PS3 architecture, will thrive come next gen, whereas programmers stuck in the old school serial programming, let-the-GPU-handle-the-rest train of thought will be left by the wayside.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio53d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing53d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9253d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit53d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing53d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9253d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
