Naughty Dog lead technical artist Mike Hatfield on the game's extra special effects
In this exclusive extract from Ballistic's The Art of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves we go behind the scenes to see how Naughty Dog used a huge variety of special effects to build the flagship PS3 title.
Mike Hatfield: ...One of the things we wanted to improve over Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was our use of real-time physics-driven events; situations like a character moving through an environment where he’s knocking things over, or he’s destroying cover with the machine guns.
Former Naughty Dog artist Gabriel Betancourt explains why the "sweet spot" for game teams is under 200 people and how AAA "factories" kill creativity.
There’s definitely some truth to this. When teams get too large, coordination starts to outweigh creativity—layers of approval, risk aversion, and tight deadlines can turn bold ideas into “safe” ones. Keeping a team under ~200 people sounds ideal for maintaining clear communication and a shared vision. That said, massive AAA projects also come with huge technical demands and expectations, so scaling up isn’t always avoidable. The real challenge is figuring out how to keep that small-team creativity alive inside big studio structures.

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) is proud to announce that Evan Wells, former Co-President of Naughty Dog and one of the most respected studio leaders in modern game development, will be honored with a prestigious Hall of Fame Award. Wells’ induction will take place at the 29th annual D.I.C.E. Awards on February 12, 2026, at the Aria Resort in Las Vegas. Neil Druckmann, a longtime collaborator from Naughty Dog, will present Wells with his Hall of Fame Award live at the ceremony.
Neil Druckmann, the creative director of The Last of Us, is working on a new, unannounced game at Naughty Dog.
Wait I thought they cancelled a game? Or did they announce another project?

by this game or had something great to say about this game
it may not be genre changing (though some will argue that point) but it sure did perfect the third person action genre
Definitely one of the best developers this generation. Uncharted 2 was simply a phenomenal experience for me. While setting technical and storytelling benchmarks, the pacing of the game was perfect, with an excellent balance of gunplay that never got repetitive, and puzzle solving that was never too complex or time-consuming.
ummm i think heaven 2.0 set the benchmark for graphics... then again the game suck... but thats a pc game.... sooo if were talking uncharted 2 set the ps3 benchmark ill give it to you
Im no fanboy (i own uncharted 2) but will uncharted sack riding stop it IT WAS RELEASED A YEAR AGO!!!
