Vanquish demo showdown 360/PS3

Platinum Games is on a mission with its upcoming shooter, Vanquish. In the wake of the disappointing reception offered to the third-party PS3 conversion of its last title, Bayonetta, the developer has switched to the Sony platform as its lead console.

"The PS3 is kind of like a sports car that's very high-performance and specific in its usage, whereas the 360 is more like a car that everybody's driving. It doesn't have the same range as a sports car, but it has more versatility," producer Atsushi Inaba told VG247 during E3.

I still remember the haters saying PlatinumGames are lying about how good the PS3 version is.

Good job PG! Nearly identical on both platforms!

hay5755d ago

And the game is fun too. Lots of dynamism and cool, anime style action. It appeared on my radar after playing the demo.

Rikitatsu5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

Mikami cannot disappoint.

I just wish people stopped playing the demo like a regular cover TPS, and made use of its features like this player:

mikeslemonade5755d ago

Good, but I don't buy generic shovelware games. When I have the opportunity to rent this game I will.

Fred-G-Sanford5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

I would really like to see this running on my PC with all settings maxed out.

Hopefully it will end up getting released for the PC.
The PS3 may be "kind of like a sports car", but my PC is "kind of like a Bugatti Veyron". :D

guzman5755d ago

@mikeslemonade: Just end yourself.

SolidMGSnake5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

Hah thanks for recognizing my gameplay video. But yea- It annoys me how people play the game as if it were Gears of War or somethin. I intend to play the game the way Shinji Mikami designed it to be- Fast paced and stylish.

Redrum0595755d ago

the game looks like lots of fun, but since its not multiplayer, (not that i wanted it to be) i hope it has a legthy and engaging campaign.

jxzcvk5755d ago

@mikeslemonade why u talking about mw2 in a vanquish article

nix5755d ago

what i did was mute the background music... it felt much more better. you feel like you're in war instead of some anime stuffs. q:

Hotel_Moscow5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

yep fred a bugati veyron that only 400 people can drive

out of the nearly 3 billion cars on the road

of course theirs those people that get lower than high performance parts so they have like a 500 hp engine with a kick ass exterior

anyway back on topic i like vanquish but its not for me

Kazu0 Hirai5755d ago

"dynamism"? not even a word. 360 version runs at a steady 30 fps while the ps3 version runs at consistantly less than 30 fps.

Sarcasm5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

""dynamism"? not even a word. 360 version runs at a steady 30 fps while the ps3 version runs at consistantly less than 30 fps. "

That's because the PS3 version has V Sync turned on while the 360 version is just capped at 30fps, but has frame tearing.

Personally I'll take V-Sync + Triple Buffering > Slightly higher frames + Frame tearing

I do it on all my PC games, sure I can run something like Bioshock 2 on my PC at 150fps but without Vsync, the frame tearing is horrendous. So I force VSync and Triple Buffering to maintain a silky smooth 60fps

Christopher5754d ago

@Rikitatsu: Agreed, though you have to admit the the choice in playstyle make this game even greater.

Army_of_Darkness5754d ago

When I played the demo last night on my ps3, I didn't notice any framerate drop at all?!?!?

nveenio5754d ago

I was very impressed with the Vanquish demo. It seems that they really worked hard to give a good experience. The graphics look really nice compared to most multiplats on PS3, and I was delighted to find that my "safe spot" was actually destructible cover. I might purchase this eventually...just not at launch.

ShinMaster5754d ago

Although minor differences such as frame-rate are unnoticeable and doesn't hamper gameplay.

Trey_4_life5755d ago

Move along nothing to see here.....PS3 version is clearly better.

n4gno5754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

@big

It's eurogamer, when it's "comparable", ps3 win in reality, and when xbox is "superior" for them, most of the time, it's comparable/equal.

" They did a really good job in making them as close to possible."

no, they don't, if you take hardware and exclusives for examples, ps3 versions have to be superiors, but ok, if you take for example uggly ports, it's good too see vanquish.

EcliPS35755d ago

Im waiting for the "Vanquish on PS3 is Sub-HD" article.

edhe5755d ago

They're both sub-HD :)

What's interesting is the triple buffering on ps3 and the double buffering on 360, it's a very cosmetic thing but it does impact interaction with the human.

On ps3 you'll have a smoother image, no tearing but the response will be affected a whole extra frame at least. On 360 the game is slightly more responsive and also has some frame tear due to double buffering.

If that's the only difference then absolutely fucking-A well done that team for getting the ps3 up to standard.

edhe5755d ago

To anyone disagreeing with my post, is it not a good thing that devs are making sure that the ps3 version is up to the standard it should be and not just getting a delegated port?

Come on.

nycredude5755d ago

And yet both version still look subpar. The demo was kind of fun but got repetitive and I was expecting it to look better. oh well may pick this up when it gets to $30.

catch5755d ago

edhe

My only problem with your comment was that it wasn't the ps3 version they had to "get up to standard" as it was the lead platform for the game making the 360 version the port and the one they had to "bring up to standard."

Either way they did an awesome job on both versions they are clearly both very smooth.

5754d ago
Scotland-The-Brave5754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

Do you know anything about porting games? Both systems have problems with multiplats,Xbox inferior multiplats - Final fantasy, dead space, assasins creed 2,dragon age, fallout.
Touting which system has better slightly looking multiplat games is ridiculous, now touting which system has the best looking exclusives, well you know the answer. its PS3. Its funny xbots say they dont care about graphics but when they get "a slightly better multiplat, they care"

catch5754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

bigwheel

It's clear you are the one who knows nothing about ports. The only reason the ps3 has a history of bad multiplatform versions is because the 360 is known for being easier to develop for so it was used as the lead for more games. Now as more developers gain experience with the ps3 and see what it is capable of they are starting to lead with it more and more and then port (admittedly more easily) to the 360. If they were not so concerned with making both versions of the game identical you would likely start seeing much more impressive ps3 versions instead of a game like this where the differences are minimal.

IHateYouFanboys5754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

@catch:

its clear that you also know nothing about ports.

multiplatform games this generation, apart from games like Bioshock, FFXIII, and now Mass Effect 2, have NOT been ports. a port is when they take a FINISHED version of a game on one platform and then convert it to work on another platform.

what developers do is they have 2 teams, one who works on each platform AT THE SAME TIME. they will share code, in-game assetts, and ideas etc. they use the 'lead' platform as the one that they get things working on FIRST, and then use that knowledge and code to make that same stuff on the other platform.

again, this is NOT porting. its concurrent development.

there have actually been very few ports this generation, you could count them on 2 hands, if not 1. vanquish is not one of them.

catch5754d ago (Edited 5754d ago )

fanboy

That is just semantics though. When you use one platform as a lead you still have to "port" that code to the other system and tweak it to make it work. They aren't exactly building the game ground up on both systems at the same time that would be redundant and wasteful.

The main point of my comment still holds true in either case. Historically it is almost always the lead platform that runs best the other version has to be tweaked to match or come close to the performace that was already optimized for another system.

Christopher5754d ago

***And yet both version still look subpar. The demo was kind of fun but got repetitive and I was expecting it to look better. oh well may pick this up when it gets to $30.***

I don't expect much out of the graphics. I do like the AI, diversity in gameplay options, and destructible environments.

I do worry about it getting boring, though. Will need to wait on some reviews to see if it's the game for me. If they can keep it up where I always have a lot of options to approach how to defeat my opponents and provide me some new capabilities as I grow, it may not get too stale.

Im sure im not the only one who thinks this and i have no issue with it if you do.

Megaton5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

No, he's just an obsessive fan. Think he's a mod on their forums or something now, too. I was in his Platinum Games faction at GameTrailers the day he created it because I do like their past work under Clover and Capcom, but left shortly after. He takes it to a whole different level.

Let me put it this way; I'd ask Kamiya to sign my copy of Okami if I met him. Rikitatsu would ask for some hair for his closet shrine.

Why o why5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

LMAO

he really is serious.

under clover and capcom...wait a minute...were they responsible for vietiful joe.....okami....etc. Loved those games...sign me up Rikitatsu;)

why so many dissagrees for a question? forgive my ignorance. I didnt do my history further than clover. please....no stones :(

cheers NubXL, ill pay more attention to their work as of now. +1

Megaton5755d ago

Yeah, Platinum Games is composed of pretty much all the legendary talent that Capcom ever had.

callahan095755d ago

"Vanquish is v-synced on PS3, so tear graphs apply to 360 version only."

PS3 version for me, then. Sweet that it's v-synced on either console! I'll take 0% screen tearing over any other graphical differences any day. Screen tearing is the single-most annoying problem with game visuals in my opinion, it just rips me right out of the world of the game.

raztad5755d ago

There is no graphical differences. Game is sub-HD on both platforms and sport the same AA and graphical effects.

Game looks decent, has a lot of stuff going on, motion blur is awesome and the gameplay is crazy fun. I'm not very happy tho.

I'll get this game, for sure, but it is kinda sad to see how PS3 owners are almost begging for the next multiplat game to be "on par", when the PS3 is capable of much more.

Vanquish is a linear game and technically is right in the territory of games like UC2 and KZ2. Why Vanquish on PS3 is not full 720p? I'm starting to get worried that multiplat devels may never be able to use the PS3 potential.

k-Lan5755d ago

"I'm starting to get worried that multiplat devels may never be able to use the PS3 potential"

Could that have anything to do with the studios budget? Serious question btw.

5754d ago
lightningsax5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

Nice, Riki, you're getting your day in the sun with this awesome demo - seriously, Mikami doesn't disappoint (but Sega tends to do so)! I've gotta say, despite Bayonetta having some major problems on the PS3 (again, thanks Sega, thanks a lot), the demos for both of Platinum's games drew me into buying them. They just play so well - the control mechanics of these games are just unparalleled.

I'm not big on the steroids-and-dark-brown style that's dominated shooters in the past couple years, so when I started playing a colorful, fast, futuristic shooter where a giant robot set off a barrage of Bangai-O-esque missiles, followed by dropping grenades and kicking them my way, I was impressed. Granted that the full game has more of everything that was in the demo, this is a Day One for me.

AKS5754d ago

I'm a fan of Clover/ Platinum, but they dumped a pile of 360 code in SEGA's lap and washed their hands of the PS3 version. That strategy doesn't work well for PS3 development, and SEGA doesn't deserve all of the blame.

hennessey865755d ago

is better looking but i wernt that impressed with the game to be honest i played both versions and the were both like playing the burnout of shooters and like burnout it gets boring after 5 minutes in my opnion

waljaber5755d ago

u should take another look at the graphic again u idiot.

Longrod_Von_Hugendon5754d ago

lmao@ the comment that 360 is the FORD of consoles.

vhero5754d ago

Unlike Bayonetta the PS3 version is better... The 360 version has screen tearing? Hope that doesn't make the final version as that just makes any game look unprofessional.

PS3 has the slight edge with triple buffering V-Sync.

SaberEdge5755d ago

They did a really good job in making them as close to possible. What I noticed is that the 360 version looked slightly crisper, but I did detect some very minor screen tearing in the part where you begin. For most of the demo the screen tearing is not present and the difference in the crispness of the image quality was also very minor. This is truly a good buy on either console based on what I experienced in the demo. I'll be getting it for PS3 since I want to play more multiplatform games on my PS3.

Ichiryoka5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

I agree!

Longrod_Von_Hugendon5754d ago

@SaberEdge

Then you need to get your eyes check because it's obvious that the PS3 version is clearer and it's colors are more vivid than the Xbox version. You can clearly see this even from that video sample.

I work in the graphics industry and my eyes are sensitive to colors and tones.

EcliPS35755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

You'd be a great PR person, cause you know how to spin. I think you forgot the rest of that quote which goes:

"Though further testing on response and performance in like-for-like situations is clearly warranted."

Look, I can spin too, watch: "The Xbox 360 version feels a touch more responsive."

You like how I did that?

yewles15755d ago

O.O??? What's there to spin? You're just getting butthurt over a comment, that's all. XD

jack_burt0n5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

@eclips3

Thats not spin, spin is eurogamer saying RE5 was superior on 360 that is truely unbelievable could you imagine being a pc gamer that doesn't play with vsync it would be time to get a new rig.

Vanquish is SUPERIOR on ps3 and so is RE5.

gamer20105755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

What happened to all the talk about not judging a game by its demo?

Anyway Vanquish is nearly identical on both consoles and they both have some advantages over the other. So, no, Vanquish is NOT superior on the PS3. Same with RE5. It depends on what advantages you think are most important.

yewles15755d ago

"What happened to all the talk about not judging a game by its demo?"

Mafia II. 'nuff said.

EcliPS35755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

No dude, look at your comment. You took the quote out of context, you ended it with a period, instead of a comma and the rest of the quote. You're just a troll, lookin to troll.

@Jack Burton
You're talking like you know all the facts. If you read the article instead of just what your blinders let you see, they say that further assessment is needed because ITS A DEMO DUMMY.

Jazz41085755d ago

I will be getting this on 360 since almost all ps3 games require some type of lenghty install.

ZombieAutopsy5754d ago

All my 360 games require a lengthy install though...at least for me since i install them so i don't have another disc drive burn out on me.

StarScream4Ever5755d ago

This is Platinum Games, "Sorry for the mess." for PS3 gamers.

Katana Yamato5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

I rather Bayonetta 2 then this to make up for PS3 Bayo's mess. I'm not into Third Person Shooter games, that's just me tho.

But i'm glad they've adapted to the PS3 hardware...which they should've done in the first place with the Bayonetta debacle.

Aleusia5755d ago

>I rather Bayonetta 2
>I'm not into Third Person Shooter games, that's just me tho.
>Implying Bayonetta isn't a 3rd person shooter

lightningsax5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )

The next iteration of Bayonetta would obviously be developed in-house at Platinum for both platforms a la Vanquish. They won't look to some awful Sega squad to attempt to port a game ever again. TGSI.

lightningsax5755d ago

It's a little of that, and a little of "Oh crap, Japanese gamers tend to buy games for the PS3, and our 360-lead idea didn't buck the trend at all. Maybe we should be making Japanese games that are playable on that system." http://www.kotaku.com.au/20...

Hallmark Moment5755d ago (Edited 5755d ago )
