Analysis: Apple Heading Toward A Gaming Collision Course

This morning in San Francisco at a Gamasutra-attended press conference, Apple laid out the plan of attack for its next generation of devices, and while it's clear that the game industry is in its sights, it's not a full-on assault just yet.

Apple is a beast.

The BEST tech company on the planet. No other company comes even remotely close.

Chris3995738d ago

The tech itself is not all that impressive when broken down, and their efforts toward gaming are half-hearted at best. The App Store has a significantly higher ratio of shovel-ware vs. good games than any other system/ network. A DS or PSP is still a much more viable option for serious gamers on the go. Until they add a proper control scheme, this will continue to be the case.

I like my Iphone, but I gave up on it as a gaming device a while back (its great for music, web and MS suite applications though).

ABizzel15738d ago

Well you pretty much summed it up. Apple has not dedicated developers for games, and most of their good games are 2nd hand versions of established franchises only not as good. The PSP and DS are still ahead of Appel's offerings and while matchmaking and achievements are great, without the proper games/audience of gamers buying these games then these feature are useless.

Longrod_Von_Hugendon5738d ago (Edited 5738d ago )

The technology is not that impressive? That's laughable but your entitled to your opinion.

Gaming wasn't the intended focus for the iPhone/iPod at the beginning but now I think they understand just how important it really is and their attitude toward this is changing.

smilydude135738d ago (Edited 5738d ago )

How is that laughable? From my experience with apple computers the hardware is generally pretty mediocre. And their operating system, while a joy to use, feels like a far more restrictive and closed off linux to me. But I haven't used their computers that much, so would you mind elaborating?

WhittO5738d ago (Edited 5738d ago )

The Specs might not be all that impressive, but the TECH used is, just an example - the Macbook Air, that is a technical marvel yet low in specs etc.

Even though they have a high price, you can't just look at how much memory or HD Space their systems have, you have to look at the quality of that system and the advantages (for 1 the battery lasts more than 1-2hours of use!!!).
You could buy a laptop for half the price with same spec as a Macbook, but that Laptop will begin to fall apart and begin to develop problems within 1-2 years, and that is probably with a Laptop that is 2-3X as fat, as loud, as hot and as heavy as a Macbook.

You pay for what you get and you generally get a much higher quality build from Apple than the cheaper alternatives (in most cases). That goes for MP3/MP4 players etc too.

Kyur4ThePain5738d ago

But there is no product, NOTHING that has as smooth a touch interface as Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch.
Period. There are a lot of wanna-be's, but everyone is still trying to catch up.

beardpapa5738d ago

despite the fact the hardware specs may be mediocre on apple products, it is sufficient for the productivity apps in the MacOS environment. The apps just work very well and smoothly despite the limited resources [when compared to higher end offerings on competing products from HP, Sony, and Dell]. I'm not sure of a proper analogy, but I suppose it's like you don't need a high-end Core i7 PC to run Doom. A 486 is good enough.

However, if you are editing 1000s of photos in Aperture as a profession, you are obviously not doing that on a Macbook Air or Mac Mini. You are probably doing that on a Mac Pro. And even so, you probably did not purchase that Mac Pro but instead it is probably part of company inventory.

I think what shines the most about Mac products is the engineering they put into designing their products. They are very well crafted. Every product is not perfect. There are always bound to be some defect, but when you compare a Mac product's craftsmanship to an equally specc'd competitor item, the Mac really stands out.

But yea, they have the 'best' marketing if anything, but if consumers keep going back to Apple time-after-time again, they must be doing something right to provide such satisfaction to their customers to make them feel that Apple is tried-and-true like a good bottle of scotch.

Longrod_Von_Hugendon5738d ago (Edited 5738d ago )

"How is that laughable? From my experience with apple computers the hardware is generally pretty mediocre."

Yet Apple is constantly winning awards for their hardware but mainly for it's reliability.

"I haven't used their computers that much, so would you mind elaborating?"

It's difficult to try and explain something to someone who doesn't have that much experience with what we're talking about and basically just a waste of time.

Apple never claimed to be a linux distro and so it's really a non issue. Their approach is totally different from linux. Apple's OS has been around since the beginning and things haven't really changed all that much since that time so what are people complaining about exactly? And there's nothing wrong with what Apple is doing. If you don't like it then don't buy it. Simple as that.

Where's the problem?

PS360PCROCKS5738d ago

I have a Macbook Pro. i chose it over any other laptop I had a choice of. Was it expensive? yup! but you know what? it's fast, reliable, runs cool, the battery lasts me a good 7+ hours, it's sexy and very well made. Their products are expensive but they are not cheap and their build quality is obvious. Oh and the trackpad is utter brilliance, no other laptop trackpad comes close.

frankymv5738d ago

@Chris

Its is widely known that Android has the largest share of shovelware. Most everything Apple makes is stellar. How do you think they became the most valuable company in Silicon Valley?

Only people that have never owned a Mac disparage the brand. Once they try it and use it, they will never go back.

smilydude135738d ago (Edited 5738d ago )

I wish I could bubble people down for 'Dumbass' instead of Trolling, Immature etc. Because in this case, I'm not sure if those would be accurate.

*disagrees*

Eiffel5738d ago (Edited 5738d ago )

Apple is just proof sheep have too much money and not enough intelligence.

starchild5738d ago

Apple products are generally fairly good, but I still think that they are trendy and overrated.

apple and its gaming LOL

Longrod_Von_Hugendon5738d ago

I know right some might have said the same about MS before they entered the market with the Xbox. : |

Seriously tho the only thing keeping Apple out of the gaming sector is Apple. They have the funding, developers and brand recognition.

OpenGL5738d ago

Apple tried to enter the console industry with the Apple Bandai Pippin 15 years ago.

Also, the new Apple TV uses the same CPU and GPU in the iPhone 4, so it has no chance of competing with the PS3 and 360 when talking about actual hardware power.

Stealth20k5738d ago (Edited 5738d ago )

The iphone/iproducts isnt a gaming device just a smart phone and the console space is crowded as it is......

In any genre in any category the ds/psp are real game handhelds

washingmachine5738d ago

its nice they have apple tv thing at 99 but for that you can get a network media player that does 1080p with youtube and other apps and plays every codec audio and movie codec under the sun. but i guess the streaming from ur devices to the box is cool etc

Epic: Mobile Gaming Business "Largely Broken," Says "Dysfunction" Due to 30% Tax From Apple, Google

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney notes that the mobile gaming industry is "largely broken," and blames the 30% tax levied by Apple and Google.

Christopher637d ago

Man has been saying this for ages and knows full well the only thing he wants is more money at Apple and Google's expense and absolutely none of this will result in lower prices for the consumer.

Tacoboto637d ago

He expects the digital equivalent of opening up his own store inside of a Walmart or Target. It's absurd.

And he feels absolutely entitled to it, in a too-big-to-fail sense - because Unreal Engine is used by so many developers, banning Epic would hurt those developers relying on their tech, which would be super unfair to the developers.

Notellin636d ago

Thank goodness you are there to defend the small guys Google and Apple. You're so brave, Christopher!

Christopher636d ago

Yeah, I'm totally defending Apple and Google and not explaining how another company is just as greedy. That's the big takeaway from my comment, Apple and Google good, only Epic bad. Yup. I totally didn't make it about the fact that this man just wants more money and isn't doing it for the consumers. Nope. Not that at all. I'm just praising up Big Tech. They're my one and only love in life. Please recognize me Big Tech Senpai!

VersusDMC637d ago

The epic games store charges a 12% tax and has been losing money for 5 years...that sounds dysfunctional.

gerbintosh636d ago

They are only losing money because Steam has a stranglehold on the market.

Christopher636d ago

It's a play to attempt to win over the market so they can then realign pricing with what Steam has in the long run. The problem is they are doing only that and not actually building a better software supported platform on PC. Essentially, they're throwing money at the problem, not actually trying to compete by providing better service.

Epic Says They Spent $1B in Fight Against Apple & Google, "Small Price to Pay" for Freedom of Market

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney revealed that they have spent $1 billion fighting Apple and Google but adds it's a "smam price" to pay for freedom.

BeHunted640d ago (Edited 640d ago )

Fortnite on the Google Play Store would've generated over $1 billion in percentage fees for Google. Smart move.

1nsomniac640d ago (Edited 640d ago )

I buy most my pc games through epic now. Don’t get me wrong I love steam and steam has had a lot of my money for the work they put into the platform. But i like what Epic are fighting for and they’ve been open about it from the very beginning. I wish they would sort out their verify/repair files option for when you format your drives. The whole rename/redownload hack is an absolutely awful archaic solution.

Tacoboto640d ago

They've been open about how they so openly violate the terms of the platforms they distribute on.

They spent over a billion on legal battles, and also had significant layoffs. Maybe they should cater to their employees first before forcing governments to add more regulations for industries governments just do not understand. The EU DMA - Apple's policies and lawyers have made a mockery of it every step of the way.

And back when they openly and proudly violated Apple's policies, they tried using Fortnite to coerce its players (including children) to rally against Apple's 30% fee.

Which is the same 30% fee console makers apply, but Epic has no problem with that! Epic isn't fighting for you, they're fighting for themselves and don't mind siphoning the money they get from Unreal, even if it results in layoffs.

1nsomniac640d ago

First of all you’re wrong, but second of all you clearly don’t know an awful lot about what you’re talking about.

Tacoboto640d ago

Epic proudly violated Apple's terms by introducing their own payment option in Fortnite. Fact. That's literally what started this. Epic then went on to put banners in Fortnite as a not-so-subtle call-to-arms against Apple.
Epic also violated console terms by enabling cross-platform play in Fortnite. Fact.
Epic cut 800 jobs a year ago. Fact.

Epic sucks, their engine is too big for them to fail and they know it, so they're using that to subsidize their legal battles against Apple and their attempts to rally international governments into creating regulations based on what *they* want.

phoenixwing639d ago

Epics launcher is a piece of crap compared to steams. In fact every launcher so far is crap compared to it. The only reason epic has any traction is they literally give away games in order to drive a user base.

anast640d ago

They have some good semi-giveaways.

KwietStorm_BLM640d ago

They'll make that back in a fortnight.
