Games That Will Define this Generation

Joe Garcia writes "Every single video game generation has had its watershed moments that people point back to when they discuss them at any length, for better or worse. Super Mario Bros. on the NES revived an industry that E.T. for the Atari 2600 had left for dead. Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis/Mega Drive spawned the first legitimate console war across school yards everywhere. An ill-advised betrayal spawned Nintendo's greatest competitor when they decided to work with Philips rather than Sony for their proposed Play Station SNES CD-ROM add-on."

LittleBigPlanet, Gears of War, Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, possibly Heavy Rain.

Probably more but those made a huge impact on this generation so far.

Uncharted 2 and Mario Galaxy are great to be sure, but they were just incredibly polished versions of previous games in their genres.

And Valkyria Chronicles will be known as one of the few undersold games that actually came back and sold more through extreme word of mouth.

Pretty good gen so far...

rockleex5737d ago (Edited 5737d ago )

Same thing applies to Gears of War and Call of Duty. O_o

Uncharted feels as if its a complete platformer, yet at the same time feels like its a complete Third Person Shooter.

No other game has done that before, one part always felt tacked on.

CrushCast5737d ago

You hit it right on with LittleBigPlanet but really I'm not so sure about Halo Reach.

DavePSU5737d ago

Well, every console usually has that one game that people reminisce about playing. I was stuck between BioShock, Mass Effect and Halo: Reach and when we broke it down together, Reach just offered so much rich content that wasn't going to be available anywhere else, so it just made sense.

We also didn't want to list 10 games, because that would be a little over the top and unlikely...so we tried to stick with just 5.

I love Playstation University. Can I get a job writing for you guys please?

DavePSU5737d ago

You can send an email to jobs [@] playstationuniversity dot com with a writing sample...the team will go over it.

vickers5005737d ago

You chose Halo over Bioshock?

*facepalm*

TheLastGuardian5737d ago (Edited 5737d ago )

I can't wait to play LittleBigPlanet 2 only I don't think LBP needs a sequel(I bet I'll get disagrees for saying that but It's true and I'm not bashing it I'm still going to buy it). I still haven't finished playing the millions of user created levels. LBP is a great value and you will get more play time than any other game this gen.

Lazyeye795737d ago

Dont worry you will still get to play those millions of levels with LBP 2. It will be completely backwards compatible with all LBP levels.

Also at first I didnt think it needed a sequel either but with the amount of stuff it has to offer, DLC just wouldnt cut it.

IHateYouFanboys5737d ago

Uncharted 2 defines part of this generation, for sure - but not a good part: overhyping, bullshots, graphics and presentation over gameplay, and fanboys.

the others, well i wouldnt really say they define the genre. id say games like Halo 3, Gears of War and Modern Warfare defined this generation. its all about shooters, 'gritty' graphics, and a huge focus on online play. Reach will do what Halo 3 did, but far better - but Halo 3 is the one that kickstarted it all this generation.

yewles15737d ago (Edited 5737d ago )

I Am A Fanboy is crying again. XD

Cyrax_875737d ago

and if you like shooters with 'gritty' graphics and online focus, why didn't you mention Killzone?

IHateYouFanboys5737d ago

like ReservoirDog316 says, Killzone 2 came what, 2 years after Gears of War? Gears of War really defined what a 'next-gen' game is, and how online play should be done.

Killzone 2 came along 2 years later and didnt redefine anything, it just took what other games have done and implemented them. you dont say that God of War 2 re-defined what could be done on the PS2, you say that God of War 1 did, because god of war 2 just built upon 1.

i love how i have 9 disagrees yet theres only 3 replys - 1 is a stupid immature fanboy comment (yewles1), 1 is someone who doesnt really understand the topic at hand (Cyrax_87), and the last one actually understands why i didnt include Killzone 2, so im assuming he didnt disagree.

good old anonymous PS3-fanboy disagrees. gotta love em.

DavePSU5737d ago

You guys are both correct/incorrect.

Killzone 2 and Gears of War were both shown and announced at E3 2005. That means they both released as "gritty" styled games with an emphasis on online play with their own merits.

With that said, both games stand on their own and you can't say Gears gets credit just because it released first...both were in development at the same time and both were shown off at the same time.

Cyrax_875737d ago (Edited 5737d ago )

Not to mention both Gears and KZ2 were annouced in the same year. A quick look at your comment history tells alot about yourself. You're a huge hypocrite, calling out others when you're a fanboy yourself.

IHateYouFanboys5736d ago

it doesnt matter that they were both announced at the same time - how long was it before we actually saw IN-GAME GAMEPLAY of Killzone 2?

E3 2005? no, that was FMV.
E3 2006? nope.
the first in-game footage was shown at E3 in 2007. Gear of War released November 2006.

so how can you say that Killzone 2 was shown as girtty and with an emphasis on online play, when up until 2007 - roughly 8 months after we were all PLAYING gears of war - noone had even SEEN the game, let alone heard about its multiplayer?

Gears gets the credit because we saw it first, and it released 2 years earlier. you dont give GT5 credit for 'defining the generation' because its got car rollovers in a racing sim when Forza 3 had it earlier, just because GT5 has been in development longer. its about what gets it out the door first, not who says theyre doing it first.

ReservoirDog3165737d ago (Edited 5737d ago )

Well Gears did the "gritty" visuals and focus on online first. You can't innovate the same thing twice. You can expand on it but that's closer to refinements, not innovation.

I love both Gears and Killzone 2 but Gears was one of the first games this gen to do the gritty thing. Killzone 2 was quite a bit after.

Also all games need* co-op (bleh) after Gears.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle18d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Why the Wii is Such a Nostalgic System in 2026

The Wii is now a retro console. Let’s get nostalgic about an often maligned system.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg24d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree24d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai24d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy25d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
