i get called a troll and fanboy for talking good about ps3 yet others are just being rational when they attack the ps3.

Maybe the-big S went a little under cover over blu-ray... but it is truely the better format with a higher bit rate

I wonder what all the HD DVD people who bought HD DVD in will feel in 2008 when they find there format is basically obsolete?

also note that if these people were smart they wouldd have bought a ps3... because o yeah ... we have major updates

Bladestar, is that there *IS a format war going on for *EARLY ADOPTING High Definition consumers.

among the high definition consumers out there in the world (of which i am one), the majority of them are clearly choosing Blu Ray over HD DVD. *WORLDWIDE.

most of this has entirely to do with the success of the Playstation 3.

Sony Trojan-Horsed Blu Ray onto the PS3, but i can't say i'm fussed about it. it just means that i didn't have to shell out, say $400 for a gaming console, then *ANOTHER $400-$600 for a stand alone high def movie player. i got both, rolled up into a $600 package. since the PS3 is $500 now, that makes it an even better deal.

the truth of the matter, is that HD content is the future. we've been coasting on standard definition, analog signals for over 50-60 years now. it's *TIME to move on and evolve.

in a few years time, HD signals will replace analog signals. this is fact.

the various studios and electronic's manufacturers are trying to get a head up on this new, uncharted territory, because they *KNOW it's going to be *HUGE, with the near-guaranteed potential for, i believe the term is, "PHAT CASH."

remember when dial-up was the only option for getting online?

remember when broadband became the standard? (thank you Microsoft and the original X Box for that!)

the same is going to happen with HD signals and analog.

digital distribution is certainly an inevitability, but not in the timeframe you guys are thinking, and not in the mass market like you're thinking.

broadband is good, but not *THAT good, and T1, or whatever the uber-highspeed service is, is too costly for that mass/mainstream market.

in the *MEANTIME, until super fast speeds become the norm, a *HARD COPY medium will be necessary for the high def consumer, whether they be early adopters like myself, or my mom, who *WANTS HD content, but doesn't have the money or means to enjoy it. *YET.

when she *DOES (that is to say, when large screen HDTVs drop below $400, and players do the same), she's not going to want to try and figure out how to *DOWNLOAD the movies she loves, and would much rather purchase a *DISC to simply pop in and enjoy.

*THIS is what Blu Ray and HD DVD are fighting over, and, as always, the consumer electronics manufacturers are using the early adopter crowd to help spread the word.

the reason why a story like this makes Playstation 3, and Blu Ray supporters happy, is because it means an end to this *RIDICULOUS "war," which in turn will drive down costs for all technology *USING Blu Ray (this includes Playstation 3), and also all software that supports Blu Ray, which will, in turn, prompt more people to adopt the format, lowering the cost even more, etc, etc, rinse and repeat.

the HD DVD camp, now that the evidence is becoming rather one-sided in favor of Blu Ray, is just extending this conflict longer than it needs to be, which is, ultimately, hurting *BOTH sides.

Toshiba should gracefully bow out, as well as Universal, instead of being pulled from the battlefield, kicking and screaming.

they *HAD the DVD generation, but the Blu Ray camp was *SMARTER this generation (ie, including the technology in a widely respected and revered brand such as the Playstation).

it's obvious that, while the Blu Ray and HD DVD markets are small, they are *GROWING MARKETS (primarily Blu Ray).

turn off the hater-blinders, and look at it truthfully and objectively. Blu Ray is *WINNING. if people didn't want Blu Ray, they wouldn't be *BUYING it. as more and more PS3's are sold, and more and more consumers purchase HDTVs (most people in the market for a new TV are going the HD route.

It's not about dislike... it's about reality... I don't hate blu-ray... as matter of fact blu-ray have the lead over HD DVD... and I think blu-ray have a better chance than HD DVD simply because of the studios support... but... these numbers are bad... I am not being negative.. I am being realistic...

What would say if it took sony 6 months to sell 650,000 games... and it's not because there are no enough blu-ray players... there are more than 1 mil in Japan alone that can play blu-ray movies..

tell that to Epic games, who may end up compressing, and *CUTTING some levels from Unreal Tournament on the X Box 360 because of the limitations of DVD9

tell that to Rockstar, who are having a difficult time fitting GTAIV onto a DVD9

tell that to the PGR team, who can't even fit something as seemingly simple as a day/night cycle onto a *RACING GAME because of the limitations of DVD9

tell that to Bioware, who have stated, numerous times, that they are having a hard time "cramming" (they're word, not mine) Mass Effect onto a *SINGLE DVD9

tell that to Midway, who's title Stranglehold, is getting the movie Hard Boiled imbedded onto the *SAME Blu Ray disc as the game, and an HD mastering of the movie at that. if the 360 had HD DVD, it'd be a nice bonus for *THAT version also (even the Penny Arcade folks are picking up the PS3 version of Stranglehold because of Hard Boiled, and they are *HEAVY Sony and PS3 critics).

i'm not saying that i don't agree with some of your sentiment, but i'm simply stating that the inclusion of Blu Ray wasn't *JUST to push the movie side of the coin. naturally, Sony will use whatever leverage they can to make Blu Ray the new HD movie standard, but to just shrug of the formats benefit to gaming is silly.

each generation of gaming hardware has come with a higher capacity storage medium, which has brought with it games and genres *NEVER possible in the previous generation (ie, the 3D Sandbox genre was just *NOT possible on a console using CDs. DVDs helped pave the way for that breakthrough; GTA3 revolutionized the industry).

it was *INSANELY risky for Sony to include Blu Ray in the PS3, but judging by the steadily increasing Blu Ray movie sales (especially now that better movies are starting to be released; Sony, Fox, or Disney haven't even *BEGUN to unleash their big guns yet), and the fact that you don't seem to hear any developers of PS3 games complaining about storage (just how difficult it can be to program for the machine, which is becoming easier practically every day thanks to new and better dev tools), or cutting features from a game because of the *DISC.

the point i'm trying to make is that Blu Ray isn't *HINDERING ambitious developers from trying new things.

i'm also a proud PS3 owner and i own about 6 games, and 6 Blu Ray movies.

i enjoy both immensely, and am looking forward to the fall game releases, as well as movie releases like the Harry Potter series, The Spider-Man Trilogy, and Pixar movies like Cars this fall.

i'm *GLAD they included Blu Ray in the PS3, because i doubt i'd be enjoying *MOVIES in High Def if it wasnt' for the inclusion. HD GAMING, yes, movies, probably not, sadly. i'm a movie buff, and a gamer moreso.

UMD wasn't really a good idea, as you couldn't *USE UMD anywhere else.

Blu Ray can be used for more than just games and movies. personally, i'd love to be able to back up the content of my Hard Drive on a few discs, as opposed to like, 40 DVDs. Blu Ray disc burners are expensive (though i heard a $300 is dropping soon), and once they get down to $100, nothing is keeping me from picking one up for my PC.

UMD did *NOTHING but work on the PSP. at least it's still being used for games, but it was a doomed format from the start, what with the limited features, and nearly *TWICE the cost of a DVD.

Blu Ray is only a few bucks more than a DVD, and is HD to boot, and *STILL comes with nice extra features, most of them *ALSO HD.

i guess i just don't see how someone could buy a PS3, whether for $500 or $600, and not at least *TRY the Blu Ray movie side of things. i mean, if you just wanted a games console, you were better off with your 360. would have saved you some money, really.

As I posted earlier, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players sells more in US than DVD-players did when they launched.
