What Do Game Developers Know About Real Guns?

In game after game, there they are: guns. Weapons are a common trope. They are a catalyst for action and an instrument for destruction. In-game guns and, well, guns are different. What do game developers know about the real deal?

Not every game developer who makes games with firearms has handled an actual weapon just like every film director who makes movies with guns has handled a real gun.

Kotaku reached out to some of the biggest names in game design to see what experience they have had with guns. The goal wasn't to pass judgment on those who have (or haven't) handled weapons, but rather, to see if those experiences provide any insights into their games.

StraightupGee5746d ago

As much as Turn 10 knows about making racing games.

Red_Orange_Juice5746d ago

hahaha, harsh one but hella funny

Christopher5746d ago

A lot more than most non-gamers.

Sarcasm5746d ago

Or Japanese developers about women's boob sizes.

Christopher5746d ago

They're just big dreamers.

Sarcasm5746d ago

Or you mean they're just Massively Plush dreamers.

Hotel_Moscow5746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

as much as microsoft knows about sucking customers money like vampires wait thats cant be right

morganfell5746d ago

StraightGee is correct. I am constantly shaking my head how many SOF units are portrayed in games like COD and MW and full auto is the order of the day and true shooting methodologies are tossed out the developmental window. There is a place for full auto it's just that most engagements with disciplined shooters don't resort to that mode. Yet with the vast majority of titles (games like Arma II and Arrowhead are exceptions) it is the rule.

We should settle all of our differences with pillow fights.

Zinc5746d ago

Yes, pillows that shoot bullets.

Bits-N-Kibbles5746d ago

that is not what I would have expected

Vip3r5746d ago

COD series actually know how to load and chamber round properly.

Elwenil5746d ago

Perhaps, but in my opinion the sounds are way, way off for the different weapons.

Bloodraid5746d ago

That they kill people, 'nuff said.

Sarcasm5746d ago

I'm a gun owner but I haven't killed anyone unless they threaten my family.

If YOU threaten my family, I will KILL you.

'nuff said.

stevenhiggster5746d ago

Guns don't kill people, rappers do!

specialguest5746d ago

Knives kill people too, but in a more slow and painful way.

jakethesnake5746d ago

Blood clots kill way more people than bullets. We should make more video games about those.

FalconR2895746d ago

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. If you leave a gun on the floor it won't kill anyone untill someone picks it up and points it at someone and pull the trigger.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
