You've got to be kidding me! Microsoft, you greedy bastards!

120FPS5780d ago

Until you can purchase a PS3 for $199.00/£149 the term "people in glass houses" comes to mind

Shadow Flare5780d ago (Edited 5780d ago )

One of the most retarded comments I have ever read. Honestly, what the hell are you talking about? I suppose Sony should have made the ps3 $50 when it launched yeah? And risked sinking the company with it? The ps3 has only just become profitable because the tech in it is so expensive. They're a business. You know, I don't even know why I'm bothering explaining this to you. I know what stance you take 120fps, but your comment was totally out of place and the comparison was awful. Geez you suck at trolling

Acquiescence5780d ago (Edited 5780d ago )

Microsoft are quickly turning into Actvision. Even the most ardent Xbox fan cannot sincerely deny this; it's just becoming a sad truth. Nickle and diming while in the midst of a recession. Pathetic.

Why o why5780d ago

i swear you'd defend MS even if they smacked your mother. Its sad that you deflect and defend so rigorously. Anyway im just glad they kept the UK price the same....some people will see that as some type of bonus which is also sad

ravinash5780d ago

Yeah... and people is Cast iron houses should fire bullets!

@Brutallyhonest

don't forget

DS - free
PSP - free
Mac - free
iPod/Phone/Pad - free (via wifi)
Droid - free (via wifi)

Can anyone name ANY other platform that charges a subscription just to connect online to use the device+software that you purchased?

Tivo is the only other one I can think of.

EDIT: maybe the upcoming OnLive box too.

Winter47th5780d ago

I have never seen such retarded perception/analytic thinking as a 360 fanboy has. It's almost as if they're so in love with everything Microsoft does it's reaching the levels of "Fetish".

East_Coast5780d ago

That's the MS we all know and love.

rockleex5780d ago

If Microsoft made a TV, they'd charge you just to watch the same free TV channels you can get with any other TV.

sikbeta5780d ago

Damn! MS is on a roll with this sh!t, they're not wasting time and want everyone to pay more...

karl5780d ago

OMG such a retarded xbox360 fanboy...

u already pay for internet m8....
except for MS all those companies actually give u something for your money u know

8-bit5780d ago

The part that makes me sick is that when they announced that the price was going up, people ran out to buy up cheap subscriptions while they still can. MS most likely saw a huge spike in sales for XBL yesterday and the money is just pouring in. Customers are pissed and they have no reason to care since they are making a killing and customers aren't smart enough to end their subscription and move on forcing MS to rethink the situation.

n to the b5780d ago

"customers aren't smart enough to end their subscription and move on forcing MS to rethink the situation."

oversimplification. it wasn't until after I'd already invested LOTS of $/time into my 360 that it really became clear to me that I'd rather not do business with MS. plus by then many of my coworker friends were commited to 360.

tell u what 8-bit if u hire me @ ~$45K I'll go ahead and trash my machine right now and go buy a PS3 or pc gaming rig... no? guess I'll stick with what I have for now then.

Baka-akaB5780d ago

still it was easy to foresee .... every cost so far included .

us 360 owners can only blame ourselves for enabling their greed and being addicted to their services

KillerPwned5780d ago

O i ended my subscription still a gold member but i wont be getting it anytime soon if ever.

n to the b5780d ago

lol @ disagrees but only 1 reply.

I used to make much better $. so yeah, by not caring about sinking more into my machine than I should have, I 'encouraged' MS to continue being greedy (as much as any 1 person can influence a megacorp anyways).

but 8-bit is asking me to move on. at this point I will just keep my bestbuy-warrantied 360 and 30+ games library and free silver membership, thank you. I've been off gold anyway for about 1 yr I think.

Baka-akaB5780d ago

well i can only sym:pathize , obviously with such an investment it's too late to move on .

I know i wouldnt . Online or not , not everyone ditch their games when done , and some are happy replaying stuff they love .

In my case it was always easy , i bought a 360 a few years back for jrpgs and mostly solo exclusive games .. i easily stayed at silver , even if unhappy about their demo hold ups and tactics .

I only recently came back to gold for two reasons , ssf4 and a few friends i love playing with on 360 ... and soon enough Halo reach .

callahan095780d ago

I absolutely agree with you 8-bit, but I was also one of the people who went out and bought a 40 dollar 12month card yesterday after the announcement. Way I figure it, I might as well get in one more good year of Xbox Live while the getting's good. I'll be able to play Halo Reach online for a year. Then I'll cancel my subscription next year when it's no longer possible to get the cheaper price subscription. I mean, I definitely don't think MS deserves to be rewarded for their actions, but I am interested in playing some of the next year's worth of games online so I just figured that while it was still possible to get another year's worth out of my gamertag for the lowest price, I might as well.

But I'm definitely not renewing again after this.

nycredude5780d ago

n to th eb

If you are implying that you need a $45,000/ yr job just to buy a ps3 or pc then I would agree with your disagrees also. I know people with no jobs that have Ps3s.

n to the b5780d ago (Edited 5780d ago )

wow, lotta disagrees.

and I don't really get it. all I'm saying is that many of us 360-only types had good reason to choose xbox over PS3 initially. and now I'm kind of trapped, thanks to not having the $ to switch consoles AND MY ENTIRE GAME LIBRARY AND MY ENTIRE DL'd TV SHOW LIBRARY (if even available thru PSN).

so yes, nycredude, it would take a pretty decent payraise for me to justify the equiv of tossing out what I've invested so far. is $45K really necessary? maybe not. but u don't even know where I live anyway! for ex: $30K is my estimate to be completely self-sustainable in PA. having lived in NJ, I know that might be cutting it close over there.

to me someone with no job buying a PS3 is indeed irresponsible - if, that is, they're not still living with mom and dad.

Christopher5780d ago

This will not go over well... on the Internet. I wonder what percentage of people actually buy these codes online rather than using a CC to auto-renew.

solidjun55780d ago

I bought the Halo Reach bundle (i'll pick it up when it's due in 2 weeks) and it only includes a free month of Gold membership. My intentions were to buy a membership buying the codes online. Now with the expected shortages, it's best that I go and buy it now.

I got the idea about the codes from a friend who does it all the time. This sucks indeed. :/

W831SOLIDSNAKE5780d ago

Microsoft has dropped lower then SH*T!!

Highlife5780d ago

you xbox fanboys act like your at church and and ms is passing the basket around and you put your money in it for no good reason other than your a sheep.

ironcreed5780d ago

LOL, best comment here. Bubbles for you.

BattleAxe5780d ago

Anyone who defends the price increase is a morron.

thief5780d ago

You have invested $300 in your console, maybe more on wifi or other accessories, hundreds of dollars on games, pre-ordered Reach and CoD – there is no way you are not going to renew your Live subscription. It makes a lot of sense for MS to wring you dry, they could raise it to $80 and still get away with it.

AssassinHD5780d ago

I bet they could get away with $100. People would justify it as "only around 27 cents per day". They could further justify it as "just over a penny per hour". They would probably compare it to the cost of coin operated arcade machines.

bustamove5780d ago (Edited 5780d ago )

Every business is out to get money but this? This is spitting in the face of gamers. I'm glad I bought a PS3 since 2007. My uncle was saying get the 360, it's cheaper but thankfully as a consumer I used my common sense and got a system that will last for a long time.

Microsoft, like I said, have lost it.

And 120FPS and outrageous ? Your logic makes no sense whatsoever.

pippoppow5780d ago

Those gamers cease to realize that they are not only doing themselves a disservice but other platform gamers as well. Hopefully next gen all other platforms do not charge to play games online and if they do hopefully there is a free option. With the success of XBL it will be no wonder other platforms do not charge for their online service. For those XBL gamers who do not mind paying how about paying even more next gen and paying for other platforms you may want to support. It's still not a big deal right? Also what if all devs require a fee to access their games online as well. Still not a big deal right? Short sited, selfish, ignorant 360 gamers will carry the most blame.

bjornbear5780d ago (Edited 5780d ago )

I feel bad for all the honest 360 only owners right now =/ (that don't have subscription cards)

this is becoming borderline extortion.

has this been confirmed? this is very ugly if so =S

spunnups5780d ago

But is it really that surprising?!

Maybe not online codes but the standard cards will still be available, since MS is advertising it on their own site.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio59d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing59d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9259d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit59d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing59d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9259d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay61d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn262d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn261d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown62d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay61d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay61d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac61d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger62d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300062d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde62d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde61d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_60d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
