What are Valve's biggest failures?

Valve is one of those developers that never seems to put a foot wrong. Whether it's Portal, Half-Life, Counter-Strike or Steam, everything it does seems to come up smelling of roses.

But it hasn't always been that way. The much-loved studio has made some big errors in its time. How do we know? Because its key execs have admitted it.

Ignoring and hating on PS3...

That's not a mistake, that's expressing an opinion and not caring about being politically correct.

He changed his mind, and made it better by showing up at E3 himself and saying right.. about those comments.. well.. maybe the PS3 is okay/even better than the xbox 360. & Gabe said he's making the PS3 version of Portal 2 better than the 360 version.

I mean, that takes courage, really. They could have honestly just showed the trailer, or had someone else from Valve go up there.

Don't be butt-hurt. Gabe Newell is an epic genius.

>epic genius

GTFO, seriously.

supremacy5741d ago

Newell, nuff said lol jk I really dont know really. To me most of their games despite being overrated cough half life cough leaft4dead cough. They really havent technically made any duds as far I can record.

il-mouzer5741d ago

over-rated? what shooters aren't over-rated in your opinion? Killzone 2? Gears of War 2? Modern Warfare 2? Those titles must be the most mediocre, over-rated titles this gen thus far.

I know it's a matter of opinion and I should fully respect that, but you shouldn't look at HL2 now, where the FPS market is stagnant in terms of innovative ideas and gameplay. HL2 MADE the next-gen shooter, and that's a six-year old game.

Regarding L4D being over-rated... well I've been playing both games I think they're the best co-op games ever, especially the dynamic scenarios - no game is ever the same.

Medal of honor: Allied assault->Cod1, 2 etc. is what made modern shooters...

I like Half Life for the deep story and music it uses. it's a great experience

Valve has never failed though, the closest time they have was with L4D2, thats because it wasn't as good as the first one

Two-Face5741d ago

Left4Dead 2 not as good as the first one? How so?

The second one has at least a huge selection of weapons compared to the small weapon selection in the first one. Also, more infected, and it's more balanced. Plenty of modes aswell. Left4Dead 1 has better characters and atmosphere, but the second one just offers much more value for your money. That's why I prefer it.

failed to have the foresight to see that the PS3 was going to be the console, they really f'd themselves with the orange box release. even that though, wont stop me from buying portal 2 on my ps3

danielle0075741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

No one but the Sony fanboys liked the PS3 out of the gate, and Gabe didn't like how different it was to develop for than the PC, and thought it was poo-tacular, if I remember correctly.

I personally didn't get a PS3 until they started having all their exclusives, but before it started having great games, I had no idea it would be the console to have, it had the slowest / rockiest start that I had ever seen with regards to Sony.

I can't blame Valve for not being able to see into the future. That's not a mistake.

Plus, the Orange Box was all EA's doing. Not Valves.

danmachine5741d ago

i love me some valve games as much as the next guy but i always felt they looked too similar, like they were half life 2 mods.

jashmister5741d ago

Adding a unnecessary damage bonus for the backburner.
and allowing someone else to make orange box ps3

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_92375d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil374d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

__y2jb374d ago (Edited 374d ago )

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

Team Fortress 2 'native VR port' could be coming to Steam after Valve releases source code

After Valve released the Team Fortress 2 source code, developers and modders are reviving TF2 VR, making it bigger and better than ever.

ZycoFox434d ago

Seems dumb, multiplayer fast paced VR... Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Source 2 versions of the games they had, remakes or sequels to their games should've come out like a decade ago, now they'd need a heavily upgraded Source 2 or just Source 3 to be up to par with current engines tbh..

The TF2 SDK has arrived

Valve: "Mod makers, rejoice! We've just released a massive update to the Source SDK, adding all the Team Fortress 2 client and server game code. This update will allow content creators to build completely new games based on TF2. We're also doing a big update to all our multiplayer back-catalogue Source engine titles (TF2, DoD:S, HL2:DM, CS:S, and HLDM:S), adding 64-bit binary support, a scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and a lot of other improvements!"
