Terrible Games by Quality Developers

Joe Garcia writes "If you look around the gaming landscape these days, you'll see a plethora of great games created by a small army's worth of talented developers.

However even the best developers have to take their lumps along the way to learn the tricks of the trade -- no one makes games like God of War III or Uncharted 2 on their first try. Two reasons are that A) those games are sequels and, mathematically speaking, can't be first tries and B) making great games takes practice, just like anything else."

Funny article. I played all of these except for Spice World. These are some awful games!

Damn, I had no idea Bend studio made Bubsy 3D.

How the hell did THAT happen? Bubsy 3D is by far the worst game I have ever played. Hahaha. It's unbelievably crappy. Though I do enjoy playing it for the laughs. But only for about 5 minutes.

I thought Way of the Warrior was kind of fun, actually, but it was definitely crappy in a low-budget, poor production value kind of way.

DavePSU5738d ago

LOL Funny enough, my mom actually loved Bubsy 3D when I was a kid. She used to play it all the time.

Red_Orange_Juice5738d ago

Way of the Warrior @ 0:45 and 0:46, is that Uncharted 2 multiplayer frag sound? It's very similar.

wollie5738d ago

i kinda loved bubsy 3d as a kid.

Kazu0 Hirai5737d ago

in regards to your way of the warrior comment: "Released in 1994 for the oh-so-wonderful 3DO, the game was essentially a Mortal Kombat clone."

Thats funny, uncharted, though it is an excellent game, is a gears of war clone with a little tomb raider thrown in for extra flavor.

Naughty Dog = the most unoriginal developer in the business. Fanboys can disagree and minus bubbles like little babies but face the facts, naughty dog has 0 originality.

Karum5737d ago

Gears of War clone?

Clearly you're not serious, there's no way that could be a serious comment/genuine opinion lol.

Lich1205737d ago

@Karum

Have you not noticed that you can take cover in Uncharted?!

Not only does it rip off Gears but it rips off combat common sense 101.

Drac5737d ago

@Lich120

GOW took the cover idea off other games too.

Both Splinter Cell and Kill Switch to name a couple.

lol...Although MW2 should be on there.
I rewards noob tactics and noobs.
There is no way this list should only have 2 games.
Theres so many more.

TheDeadMetalhead5738d ago

The 3DO was quite the crime against humanity itself.

dredgewalker5737d ago

Yeah....$600 for a piece of worthless console. Can't believe how much people complain at the PS3's launch price.

kaos_fish II5737d ago

Actually Road Rash and Need for Speed were quite excellent on the 3DO..

Now that Philips CD-i was a crime against humanity.

stevenhiggster5737d ago

I had a CD-i, infact I'm pretty sure my brother still has it. It was weird, all the games were pretty much just interactive movies, it did have awesome graphics though.

pain777pas5737d ago

Wow! All those games look bad. Glad I have none of them in my collection. This goes to show that where you begin is certainly not where you're going to end. Great article.

thor5737d ago

lol Busby 3D... I remember I went into Woolworths to buy my PS1 (first console I owned), picked that game off the shelf (well who was I to know?). When I went to buy it the guy said "sorry we're out of stock of that game have this instead" - it was Rayman 1. Maybe I would never have got into gaming had I started with a crap game?

PirateThom5737d ago

Dodged a bullet there. I really like Rayman... Bubsy, not so much... it's horrendously bad. I had a friend who loved it though.

♥ :O, Naughty dog made a terrible game. I find that hard to believe with such great games like uncharted.

Edit: OMG. After youtubing that game. Um... I hope and pray they do not make another fighting game ♥

Wikipedia.org: Production of Way of the Warrior began in 1993. During that time time, Naughty Dog was bankrupt and barely had any money to finish the game. Friends of the company were enlisted to portray the game's characters. As Naughty Dog could not afford a bluescreen or any kind of motion capture backdrop, a yellow sheet was glued to a wall in the developers' apartment. However, the apartment turned out to be too small. To film the moves in the game, Jason Rubin had to open the front door and shoot from the apartment hallway. The neighbors mistakenly believed that the crew were filming kinky adult films. Pillow cases and sheets, various items within the apartment, McDonald's Happy Meals and inexpensive knick knacks were used to create the costumes of the characters. To round out the experience, Jason Rubin joined in and participated by portraying two of the characters in the game. After the game was completed, Naughty Dog presented Way of the Warrior to Mark Cerny of Universal Interactive Studios (now the defunct Vivendi Games). Cerny was pleased with the product and agreed to have Universal Interactive Studios be the publisher of the game, as well as signing on Naughty Dog for three additional games (which would later become Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back and Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped).

Moral of the story: If they don't get the chance to make a bad game, sometimes they don't ever get the chance to make good games either.

yewles15738d ago

After the disapointing sales of Rings of Power, it's pretty understandable what ND had to go through when following up with WotW.

house5738d ago (Edited 5738d ago )

most of those games are great

DavePSU5738d ago

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle18d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Relientk7718d ago

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Why the Wii is Such a Nostalgic System in 2026

The Wii is now a retro console. Let’s get nostalgic about an often maligned system.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg24d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree23d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai23d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde24d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy25d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

DivineHand12524d ago (Edited 24d ago )

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
