I loved GTAIV. Its 2nd my favourite game in the franchise and its better the Red Dead Redemption(IMO) but my score for that game probably is 9.4. I really hate when people complain about the beginning of this game and acting like non of the other GTAs do it even though all 3D GTAs have a crappy beginning.

It's about a 7-8ish game. Just Cause 2 wipes the floor with GTA4. Now that is an excelent open world game and it was done in a way open world games should be done.

if grand theft auto never existed this game would not be overrated, but it is because gta vice city, san an were better.

I'd still give the game a 10 but it was overrated. It was a bit of a let down after San Andreas. It was too realistic,too heavy feeling and nothing fun to do besides missions which could be a bit repetitive.

No game deserve perfect score, ever. This is no exception. No matter how good a game is, it shouldn't get a perfect score, because nothing is perfect.

I actually laughed back in the day when gamespot gave chrono cross 10/10.

Red Dead Redemption is not Overrated.

Back when the game came out, devs were still slacking in terms of technical potential on consoles. GTA IV was a great game because of all the detail and polish put into it. No GTA game before it had so much attention put into realism as this one. Sure they could have made San Andreas 2 but that would have been the easy way out. The only thing that was bad about GTA IV was the fact that it had to be ported to 360 and it fell into the DLC cash cow. Its a god thing Rockstar is considering making the next GTA a ps3 exclusive to maximize the potential of GTA. Thats waht made the other GTAs great on Ps2.

San Andreas was better. Also the MP modes were tacked on and poorly designed.

All games are over rated and nothing is perfect. But there are games out there that I just couldn’t put down until I beat it. Halo, Bioshock, Fear, Mass Effect 2 are just some. And I didn’t know any reviews because I bought them before there were any, so go figure…

You play a game to have fun. GTAIV was the least fun I had playing ANY GTA game to date! period.
I'd go as far to say that Saints Row 2was better based on the amount of fun I had playing it. Word to the developers, your goal should be to make a GAME!

I am honestly enjoying Mafia 2 much more than I did GTA4. It may just be the "authentic" style mobster story. Who knows? Maybe it was just too difficult for GTA to live up to the hype and past glory of the previous games. I suppose someone could argue that Mafia has a bit more breathing room and lesser expectations.

I don't think it was overrated. It was a very good game. Look at all the games that have come out on this gen of consoles...this one has to rank pretty high in comparison. There is so much attantion to detail, and I thought it was great fun.

I think the vocal opinions against it are from people that had played all the other GTA games, and were expecting specific deliverables in this game. I myself judge it based upon how it stacks up to other games this gen...and that is pretty damn good IMO.

On this site GTA IV is underrated obviously because you guys hate it so much. It's a fantastic game I just think that it's not as good as some of the other GTA's. GTA IV is one of the finest games of this generation.

I thought it was boring. The best time I had with it was free roaming with a few pals. I found the PS2 iterations way more enjoyable.

Another debate on GTA IV ay?

My thoughts: Great technical achievement. A whole living, breathing city to explore. Everything feels alive and its the smallest details that really pull you in. Watching people go about their business on phones, carrying their groceries home, bums begging for change.

Sadly this novelty quickly wares off once you get into the game. The story falls flat on its face half way through and the missions get repetative and boring and your 'friends' are constantly ringing you play games that, quite frankly, aren't enjoyable. I suppose its nice being able to go to a bar and play pool or darts with a friend, but these are games I would much rather play in real life rather a game.

Overall, yes, it was overhyped but it another GTA, incredibly fun games that nearly every gamer enjoyed. And I still think its fun. I occasionally go back to wreak havoc around Liberty City, steal cars and blow shit up or kill some cops. I don't regret buying it for this reason.

The most overrated game this gen...no that was RDR or Halo 3.

I don't think the game was overrated. People were expecting just way too much. I think Rockstar Nailed it, i've had the game since day 1 and i still play it constantly.
The level of detail the game has is very impressive, i can't wait for the next installment but i really do hope the next game is a ps exclusive so Rockstar can take advantage of a dual layered Blu ray disk.

IV to me was a let down. Not because wheres my jetpack, wheres my car customization, bla bla bla bla. I found no reward in the game like past GTAs. I felt gipped trying to find hidden packages. No extra guns to get from doing so or whatever what nots. No Cool rewards for doing extra task. I dont consider the trophy system that great for this game as to where my reward was. This was the only gta i could finish full and through in a week. Maybe im just getting older and better at video games.. but i swear it took me months to complete the other gtas. This also was the first gta, where i started out really enjoying the story and the cut scenes.. to mid way through the game, i just kept hitting x to get me out of the cutscene because they were soo boring. The story got horrible IMO. The characters got on my nerves fast. The missions started to be almost identicle.. go to point A hide behind box B then shoot guys. Mission complete. To me in past GTA's you had to really think of how to use the weapons you collected to get by a stage and strategize how to escape..The car handling i did not like. But i delt with it. I missed the ability to hold up stores, do rampages, take the slow pill. I did not like at all the going to bar system. It was cool at first like all the rest of the bells and whistles.. but after seeing how horrible the handling so they chould showcase the physics of the game i got turned off fast.
Dont me wronge there are alot of things I do like about IV.. but the bad over does the good. Im sure someones going to have some comments on ohhh its because they shot for realism, the cartoony play was dumb.. well to me, the cartoonish way is what sold that game.

GTA is for the sheep of the gaming industry just like CoD. GTA4 was rubbish, give me a damn living world already, i'm sick of turning around and everything that just drove passed has vanished. and graphically it was a disaster, but hey, i'm always in the minority

Overrated: For a game to average a 96-98 (depending on metacritic or gamerankings) you really must impress from a new standpoint. The city didn't feel any more alive then that of Vice City or San Andreas with the execption of knocking over shopping bags. Taking out certain things from SA were rarely mentioned by the critical reviewing media, but instead focused on the additions- which were fun additions mind you-.

Overhated: Personally, it's still a 9/10 for me but I don't see how people find it to be THAT overrated. Seems to be a bunch of blind hate by most people who really go on about it.

A little, not as much as the haters like to make you believe though. It's not 10/10, but it's very close. It's still a game so I just hope the hype didn't make you expect a gift from god.

RDR I would say was even closer to a 10/10 as long as you don't dislike the setting (I've never been a fan of westerns but I loved it so you never know).
