GTA IV overrated?

I remember when GTA IV was first released. With a Metacritic score of 98, it had a tad bit of hype to live up to. Like most people, I was outside my local Gamestop at 11:00 PM impatiently waiting for my copy. The only other time I’ve anticipated a game this much was San Andreas. There was nothing I wanted more then to get home and pop in the disc. As soon as I heard Roman shout, ”Niko, my cousin!’, it hit me. This is the game I’ve been thinking about every time I went to sleep for years. I was astonished at the amount of detail put into this masterpiece. Never once did I doubt GTA IV was a 10/10, but other people just might have.

I bought it on day 1 and played all the way the main story. It was fun and I feel like I got my money's worth out of it, but no way was it a 10/10. More like an 8.5. RDR was significantly better IMO.

Nitrowolf25742d ago

i liked RDR more
really though it was the hype i had for it that killed it
hey i was expecting something along the line of "fun" like SA provided. i was expecting crazy cheats like prev. GTA games have had, and doing havok on the city with tanks airplanes, using a jetpack all those fun cheats.

Bobbykotickrulesz5742d ago

Yeah it was overrated. In my opinion so was Red Dead Redemption.

But I'm also overly tired of those style of games so that defintely plays a part in my judgement.

Non_sequitur5742d ago

They need to bring back flying. That was my favorite part.

Trebius5742d ago

But yeah, GTAIV is the most overrated game of this Gen so far.

The thing is though ... the development team didnt mess up or anything, they were overly ambitious with the world.

They built this huge beautiful city, but the city wasnt really utilized to its full potential. It was fun cruising around the city and looking around, but after a certain point in the game you start thinking that the scope of the world is immense, but there's nothing to do with it.

It was a great game overall, but no more than an 7.5 or 8/10

With the Ballad of Gay Tony expansion it's pushing 9/10.

Red_Orange_Juice5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

omg, give the game a break, get hits some other way

DaTruth5741d ago

How could they take out "pedestrians riot"??? The game is over rated on this point alone!

All GTA3 games had this incentive; Once you finish the main story... PEDESTRIANS RIOT!!!!

And I am not even a GTA4 hater, I really enjoyed the game, but I would have enjoyed a full GTA experience more.

RonRico5741d ago

RDR was deff better and it still wasn't a 10/10.

spacetattoo5741d ago

DUDE, did you even read the article. he's sticking up for the game.
So who looks like a fool reading the headline and then just commenting

I thought the game was over rated, horrible controls. plus the achievements ruined it for me. what you get maybe 350 achievements for playing the whole game. the rest you have to play multi player.
which sucks.

I think at best it gets a 8/10 not no 9.

badz1495741d ago

after 2 frickin years and we still get THIS? it was and still is over rated! end of story!

I thought both GTA4 and RDR were overrated, both bored me senseless. GTA4 wasnt as fun as it used to be and like i said above RDR just bored me but then again I was never a fan of westerns

-Alpha5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

I feel the reason was because of the move to next gen. Just like last gen, it took up to San Andreas for gameplay to be at its peak. I expect the same this gen. I agree #4 was a letdown. It's a problem with many games this gen that I just lose interest so quick.

And you know what I blame? People's obsession with purty grafiks over gameplay. That is what GTA IV was, graphics and detail over gameplay. Not a bad thing, but again, both must be balanced.

Motorola5742d ago

After I got 100% on RDR. I got bored IDK what to do with the game now. Trade it in for JC2, maybe

RonRico5741d ago

not being a fan of westerns probably took RDR down a couple of notches in your book. Some people are fans and they loved it.

RayRay365742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

@ Red OJ Hits? Im just trying to get people to realise that GTA 4 isnt just some over hyped failure. Most people think Im saying that its overrated, but if they read the whole article, they would see what Im saying. Unreal man...

Sarcasm5742d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

"GTA IV overrated?"

It IS overrated. It's not a 10/10, but an 8/10 or 9/10.

Hanif-8765741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

Well, i think the amount of detail Rockstar put into GTA IV is just simply staggering. I'm playing through it again and the physics engine is above and still beyond anything available now. I've never seen a city come to life like what GTA IV has shown and i just hope that they can even do better in the next one. I have to admit that what i've seen so far this generation hasn't come close to what GTA IV has done on a technical level because the Euphoria paired up with the Rage engine is something to behold the physics in this game is beyond anything i've seen. It just to show you how much i love this game, i bought it 4 times. I bought it when i had my Halo 3 edition Xbox360 that RROD and with my 60GB PS3 that i had to sell because of financial issues and i bought it again because now i have a 80GB PS3 and i bought it again last week Saturday on the new Xbox360 Slim. I know its dumb but i got it really really cheap :-)

corneliuscrust5741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

GTA4 is still full of great times for me.

FanboysWillHateMe5741d ago

you'd think that GTA IV was a game that was barely decent. It's the most realistic city I've ever seen in a videogame. I don't think it's just the hype...there's a reason why you'd have to search for a review that didn't give it a perfect at the time. 10 out of 10s aren't perfect, but they're exceptional, and I think GTA IV was such a game. An 8 out of 10? Really?

Philoctetes5741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

You're completely right that Liberty City was well-designed and the level of detail is incredible. If we were just going to grade the game on how cool Liberty City is to drive around in, it would get a 10. But that's not the only factor we rate games on. Gameplay matters, and unfortunately the gameplay in GTA4 just wasn't up to speed. The missions were super-repetitive (drive somewhere, kill some guy, lose 3 stars, repeat) and the whole "friends" thing was a PITA and not fun at all.

It's not that the game sucked or anything. It was fun for a single playthrough. And I never played any of the DLC which everybody says is better than the main game, so I can't factor that into my evaluation. It's just that while the game was awesome when you first took it out of the box, it got stale really fast and it was actually sort of a chore to finish. "10 out of 10" games are supposed to be fun all the way through and should leave you wanting to start a new playthrough immediately after finishing your first. When I finished GTA4, I was glad to be done, I put it on my shelf, and I haven't had any desire to open it since.

FanboysWillHateMe5741d ago

I played through it a second time a few months ago and was blown away all over again.

DaTruth5741d ago

The combat mechanics were severely lacking and in a largely combat oriented game, this should hurt the score badly.

It didn't kill the game for me, but a 10/10 game shouldn't have its main focus hurting so badly!

Playerz85741d ago

I bet everyone who keeps bitching about this game hasn't even played the expansions, which are way better, and more fun. I thought GTA 4 was absolutely awesome, way better than some stupid Call of Duty sequel, which is way overrated.

spacetattoo5741d ago

Not only did the gameplay suck but if you failed a mission, you got to drive all the way over to the douche bag. talk to him just to start the mission again, no need for that.

that pissed me off, just seemed to make the mission longer for no reason but to irretated me..

danmachine5741d ago

i think you all need to give it another play, take in the city, the attention to detail, the awesome gameplay and driving physics. its the greatest game i have ever played and imo the greatest game ever made.

that being said, the dlc episodes were alot better than the main game.

renegade5741d ago

Yes is overrated my understand is for those 10/10 for a game at that time, very rare to hit 10 back in the day now is common.$$$ is the answer for now we getting a lots 10.

cayal5741d ago

GTAIV used the same tired formula they've used for GTA3, GTAVC, GTASA.

New guy in town, makes a friend, does some jobs, gets betrayed ,revenge.

Tired!

renegade5741d ago

For me a 9.0 is GTA4 is good game but is not perfect

bnaked5741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

GTA4 is maybe overrated, but Liberty City isn't..

tynam5742d ago

HA, HAHA
Of course it's overrated, who said it wasn't
It was a good game and everything, but 98 on metacritic, I'd give it an 85.
I think the same happened to Read Dead Redemption, to a lesser extent, I'd give it a 90-92. It was a really good game, but got pretty boring after the first playthrough, also the ending was terrible

belal5742d ago

an 9 at best, it wasn't bad, but it lacked the fun feel that gta vice city or san andreas had.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies754d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken754d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing69755d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker755d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo755d ago (Edited 755d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing69755d ago (Edited 755d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos755d ago (Edited 755d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt754d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken754d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
