Will TGS be FF Versus XIII's saviour?

Xrossplatform writes: After being announced over 4 years ago at E3 2006, fans can be excused for being a little agitated at the slow progress of FFXIII Versus. Add in producer Yoshinori Kitase saying last week that Square Enix “can’t commit” themselves to a 2011 release date, and you begin to wonder when it will ever finally get a release date.

Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed a very small showing of Versus at TGS, with a 1-minute trailer of new footage, but with the lack of information and footage over the past year, I don’t think too many people will be making a fuss over how little the trailer just may show. Whether we will see much gameplay or any new locations is a mystery, but if all goes well, maybe we could hear a release date by Q1 2011? Here’s hoping, and indeed for some decent information about the title in the next few months.

It's been 4 years already?

And no game-play videos just yet... : /

Christopher5747d ago

My prediction:

- It will be announced as going multiplatform outside of Japan, similar to FFXIII.
- Due to the lack of information prior to this announcement on gameplay and story, it will likely turn out similar to FFXIII in terms of linearity and design and the 360 will be blamed for this design, though no proof will ever be provided to back up such claims.
- The 360 version will likely be improved over what was presented with FFXIII, but it won't be exactly the same as the PS3 and therefore lambasted for being inferior.
- The 360 version will release on two or three discs. Again, lambasting.
- The PS3 version will sell on par both in Japan and in Europe to FFXIII.
- The 360 version will sell on par to FFXIII (~20% of total sales, ~40% of total sales outside of Japan), making a ton of profit for SE.

From a business stand-point, it's only logical considering the strength of sales on the 360 with FFXIII.

Trebius5747d ago

During the early stages of development, Nomura mentioned that if his masterpiece ends up a candidate for multi-plat release, he's going to quit. He's like Kojima, a perfectionist, he's not going to allow his vision and passion for game developing to be squandered by Squenix's obviously greedy big wigs.

Nomura is the only talent they have left in that whole studio, so they need to be careful not to lose him.

Christopher5747d ago (Edited 5747d ago )

I remember that as well Trebius. Only thing is, people can be forced into corners. Remember Kojima has been on the MS E3 stage two years in a row, even though he dislikes the 360 platform as well.

I think it's easy for me to type what I do about the game because I haven't felt attached to any of them since FFIX. I'm really hoping that one of the FF games that will come out will drag me back in. But, for now, I just look at the franchise from a business perspective, and it seems most likely that the above will occur.

+bub for good memory on that

Natsu X FairyTail5747d ago

Game will suck. It'S S-E afterall. Any good SE games these past years except for portable consoles? nope.

chidori6665747d ago

yep.

It will never. Square just can't make decent games anymore.

pinkyxyz5747d ago

crystal defenders was the sh^t, tower defense ftw!!!! lol

Trebius5747d ago

The team working on Vs is the team that influenced Chrono Trigger and FFVII. With Nomura masterminding it all.

I wouldnt be surprised if this is the ONLY good release Squeenix has this Gen.

Zechs345747d ago

While it's true that most Square Enix games nowadays are substandard, and their new IPs look lacking and uninspired, they do have some of the best teams employed in gaming. Nomura's team has been working on the handheld market because it takes less time, effort, and resources to bring an established and successful property over.

The world ends with you was a phenomenal game. Both handheld Kingdom Hearts titles have been commercially successful with Birth by Sleep already being an incredible success and has not even released here yet. And 3rd Birthday looks great and its great they are bringing back one of their best franchises in Parasite Eve.

Point is, it's easier to take risks and not jump to a $30 million budget on Kingdom Hearts 3 as a PS3 exclusive, than for $2 Million on each of the handheld games they have worked on and have been successful with.

ndibu5747d ago

Your agrees will come once this game goes multiplatform

stonecold35747d ago

nomra stated its a ps3 exclusive which will never see the day light on xbox 360 its only a ps3 exclusive mean no other console will have this game and it belongs on ps3

albel_nox5747d ago

Only the naive believe a third party when they say a game will be an exclusive these days. I'm not saying Versus 13 is coming to 360 but it is possible.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5747d ago

It's Tetsuya Nomura as the Chief. Looks like you never played a game from him before.

Is guaranteed Versus gonna be awesome and better than FFXIII by Wada as the Chief.

albel_nox5747d ago

Wada is not the Chief of FF13. He is the CEO Of Square Enix. That makes him the Cheif of it all not Nomura.

Count5747d ago

I have, and although they're good, they're not that special.

mastiffchild5747d ago

nbidu and albel-nox-I'm not going to assume you're both trolling in the hope you will hit the nerves of people who would be entirely right to be upset about it should it go multiplatform. No, instead I'll just say what my opinion is on the chances of it occurring this time out;slim at this point, very slim. Naturally with SE more happy to throw sops to the big spending, coersive MS stance on JRPGS it remains a divisive, potentiall game killing possibility but Nomura's VERY impoertant to SE and wants to make a true, quality game for one optimised platform and being pro Sny as a person he will want it to sta on PS3 alone.

He's done design or direction on a host of SE games for all platforms but the delay for Vs allied to the lack of a KH3 anywhere makes me think Nomura's negotiated a bit of space to do what he wants with a couple of games after bending over backwards to make the games SE wanted him to. Resulting, IMO, in a ,man getting his own way and making the first proper SE PS3 exclusive this generation.

Should it go multi I also think SE fans who bought their, then, expensive launch PS3s on the strength of SE trumpeting "only on PS3 " for four odd years-the had to announce it multi when FF13 was announced, imo, as why find yourself in the position that SE would having TWICE the crap from Sony fans that they needed to.

nomura has stood firm and I think that VS will finally be the SE game to take advantage of a consoles true strengths with a BR full of optimised quality and not gimped by two sets of console weaknesses. It's a real exclusive chance to shine on the system he has more gaith and storage in and I cannot wait even if i'm not a KH fan and feel the action combat must have a strategy element to satisfy turn based fans and better action to please thse who want more than the CC/KG press "X" to win BS.

TWEWY on home consoles would be even better than Vs and THAT game looked better than FF13 right from the off as it's just more interesting a concept, more grown up and because we won;t be disc swapping, worried about royalties for extra discs hopes are very high for better results, higher resolution and smoother performance all round and damn the trolling. A sad day if Nomura isn't given his head on this one and he might walk, I was told , if SE don't show him some class and appreciation and care about their game for once.

Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.

-Foxtrot61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

I was just going to say this, their biggest and top rated game here is TLOU2 for PC….it’s embarrassing.

Even Ubisoft and EA are ahead

Kind of surprised Nintendo is pretty low aswell, their biggest game is also a rerelease with the Switch 2 version of TotK.

StoneColdCrazy60d ago

That’s what happens when you start shutting down your own studios and forget what actually made you matter in the industry in the first place. Sony used to set the standard — now it feels like they’ve lost that identity. And if they decide to walk away from the PC market too, that’s going to be another huge mistake — that platform is only growing, and ignoring it now would just put them even further behind.

1Victor61d ago

@christopher:” Take note, Sony, you're falling behind by a lot.”
.
Why single out Sony? Microsoft didn’t do any better than the year before 5th same as Sony 9th and they have acquired activision and other mayor titles that have boosted their score massively from a 9th and Sony a 4th the year before the acquisitions.
Sony does need to do better without a doubt and I do hope they do take note but not the note of buying publishers is the way to succeed.

Christopher61d ago

1. Microsoft didn't get worse.
2. Sony got way worse.
3. Because Sony needs the criticism the most considering their publishing output this generation has been propped up by last gen ports and third-party developers for the most part.

61d ago
thesoftware73061d ago

1Victor,

I don't wanna speak for Christopher, but like most of us we recognize that Sony's output this Gen has been way below their own standards.

Also Sony did buy a fair amount of Devs, I know you will say they were not publishers, and don't compare in size, but they had their fair share of Aquisitions, including the very well established Bungie.

The overall point is with their stellar first party track record of the past, they should not be going down, they are singled out because they are some of the best videogame devs/publisher on the planet...no matter what reasons we attribute to the situation, they are moving in the wrong direction... period.

61d ago
KyRo60d ago

Its widely accept that Sony this generation has been underwhelming. We've had more peripheral releases, controller variants, PS5 accessories than games it feels like. The exclusives were also PS4 and what little output they have put exclusively on PS5 is nowhere near as memorable as what came in every generation before that.

This isn't a Sony hate post but anyone who's older and has been around for a long time gaming will agree that PS5 is by far Sony's worst generation. As much as Xbox is in the gutter, I pray the do bounce back in the hope we get Sony to wake up again.

darthv7260d ago (Edited 60d ago )

If you want to critique MS... you are doing so towards their management. The games output and their hardware have been much better than PS this gen. Sadly... people still hold a grudge against XB because of MS. Thankfully i am not that petty... I've been enjoying their games output in the drought of PS. And add in some NS1/2 games as well to balance things out. Things will change for me once Wolverine hits, and I start using my 5 more. That one I'm looking forward to. And the Marvel fighter... I'm not a GTA player so that has no bearing on my view of things.

Big part of that has been the live service push resulting in cancellation or flop after flop but when they put out the games their fans want we get amazing stuff like astro bot

Leadership really screwed the pooch trend chasing

Well I apologize I was wrong about not doing worse but my statement of Microsoft getting a boost still stand 🤷🏿

1Victor60d ago

Well OBSCURED unlike you I’m honorable enough to recognize when I’m wrong and apologize.
.
@ The software you know there’s no comparison between what Microsoft acquired and what Sony acquired that’s why you tried to get ahead of the conversation, yes we all know Sony can do better than what they have done this gen but they inhaled the poison GAS they thought would bring money for years but we make sure they got the message and quite a few games got cancelled you know as well a hit like that take years to be corrected and by now they hopefully will have taken steps away from the GAS and slowed their approach to them.

But... but... the garbage-mongers always tell us that Square Enix is in trouble! 😂

Christopher61d ago

Square doesn't help that it fear mongers itself with ridiculous 'goals' that they can't reach and then they proclaim failure if they don't reach it. They're quite freaking profitable and people act like they're dying.

SimulationDaily61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

Keep in mind that these "proclamations" are usually third-hand bad translations from somedude who was at the investor conference, posted on Twitter, and picked up by press and youtubers like they were gold, and then when the official translation comes out, they're much softer statements, but at that point, the damage is done.

gold_drake61d ago

to be very fair

being number one on these things does not indicate how "well" their games do selling wise.

360ICE165d ago

If your response to a 112 page presentation from a profit-maximizing investment fund about the need for corporate restructuring (i.e. layoffs), integrating non-gaming (i.e. sell merch or build a theme park) and other corporate initiatives, is that it's about "go woke, go broke", then it's because you've lost the ability to think in any terms. Awful way to live your life. Private equity is destroying the games industry while you obsess that Square made a cringe game everyone thinks is cringe in 2023. Time to move on.
