2011: A Make Or Break Year For Xbox 360?

Coregamer's Jon Martin says: Picture the scene; June 14th 2010 at 5pm, after receiving an invite to watch the Microsoft E3 conference at IGN UK’s office in London I was filled with excitement and confidence that I would be able to witness and discuss the latest developments from Microsoft for the next year or so. Flip forward 3 hours and I was confused and somewhat insulted by what I saw; one new trailer for a Crytek game, two gameplay demos and a trailer for existing titles, an hour of Kinect? This was not what I signed up for and I vented my frustrations to those around me who agreed and it left me fearful as to the future of Xbox 360 in the next year and this is why.

well for me as a 360 ps3 owner, its hard to say, i mean im a big gears of war fan, im looking foward to cryteks new game, and also mass effect 3, but i feel like the 360 is very light on exclusives.

edit: EXTREMELY LIGHT.

Chubear5756d ago

and while 360 gamers will have to pay a fee to access the online portion of Crysis2 PS3 gamers don't have too so it turns out to be even more expensive for 360 owners.

I have to ask though, after Gear3 in Q1 2011, what then 'till Christmas in the hopes Kingdoms (that we've not seen much off) turns out to be a true AAA exclusive title.

and even then what does it say about a console's life span when the 2 main 'excluisves" in the year are from 3rd party developer studios?

Many chimed that MS had little to offer it's base for 2009 and we heard "oh stfu, MS is holding back and doesn't announce games in advance" then 2009 was an awful year for the 360 w/ excluisves. We then said MS is showing nothing for 2010 and were met with the same venom and as we can see, yet another year of a small offering of true exclusives as even more "exclusives" are coming on PC (Fable3, Alan Wake, splinter cell)

yet youll get many till convincing you that MS not only has a tonne of exclusives for 2011 but even more than Sony. I just have no words when I see comments like these on gaming forums. It's as if they really don't care about gaming and just support MS product till the death (pun intended) cause they just want to "win"

big_silky5756d ago

Who is talking about winning? I've been through enough console gens to see that the 360 is on the decline. I can live with that. Because I care about gaming ;).

And everything you said could pretty much be applied to the first 2, 3 years of the ps3's life. It's only really this year that they've gotten a significant number of exclusives, emphasis on significant numbers.

Frankly, why should I even support the ps3? The fanboys here are so utterly cultish that I'm embarrassed to own one. I couldn't care less if they had 1000 games next year. Yet another article about the 360 filled with Sony fanboys. Surprise surprise.

GWAVE5756d ago

360 really has to bring something special. They've been dallying too long. 360 2009's lineup was decent, but it relied on a few key titles, and there weren't a ton of titles throughout the year. 360 in 2010 has several solid titles (ME2, Reach), but the pickings are even slimmer than 2009, and Microsoft showed off NOTHING this year as far as new games. You can see the decline of games quite clearly. I can't imagine any self-respecting gamer is impressed with Microsoft's current state.

Red_Orange_Juice5756d ago

2010 was make or break, and they didn't make it :)

f MS was to release a new console, the PS3 would fall even further down the totem pole. If MS released a console it would have high end pc specs, and upscaling capabilities that were reported a year or two ago. Thats even more reason for 3rd party devs to focus on what MS is doing, because once again they won't have to break their necks trying to figure out how to make a multiplat game for the PS3. Once again, the PS3 will be the lowest common denominator. So I suggest you all chill with the reverse psychology, thinking MS releasing a console would be a good thing for Sony fanboys "arsenal" of attacks. Because believe me you, you Sony fanboys don't really want that to happen. If MS released a console as I described for $400, thats even more reason for me not to pick up a PS3. If I do decided to buy a PS3, it'll be when the price is $200 or less. The 360 isn't going anywhere, until 3rd party devs completely stop supporting the console. Now ask yourselfs when do you think this will happen. Besides LBP or Demon's Soul, I'm really not that interested in what else is on the PS3, definitely not enough to spend $300 + $$$$ for the games. Nah, I'm good son!

outrageous5756d ago

M$ is competing with itself and this article is just an attempt to avoid the FACT that Sony had/has nothing decent this year. KZ 3 releases in 8 months...lol. 2010 has been rentals at best for Sony's struggling machine.

M$ made it clear that 2011 will have many great games and key exclusives. Sony has announced all there games already because they have nothing else to talk about. LBP and a car sim isn't gonna interest anyone, especially when your competition has killer games like Halo Reach and Fable inbound. The massive franchise COD Black ops beta exclusive to the 360. Kinect the most advanced motion device will only get better in 2011.

Honestly, Sony only cares about money and thats why they are trying to get everyone to buy a new 3dTv and $150 glasses. Gamescon was in 3D...what about people who don't have a 3Dv? I guess they can buy a 360 and play all the great games in 2011 like Gears, Bulletstorm, Rage Crysis and Halo 4 on 360...no new Tv or glasses needed.

lowcarb5756d ago

I will never understand the constant attacks towards 360 when it's obvious this year they are bringing it and next year isn't even here yet. Totally agree with Outrageous above 100% and think you guys talking down on 360 for games need to look in the mirror. Sony is the company I would worry about and think it's sad that they feel the need to once again hype exclusives without confirmed release dates. By now one would think we could have a mature conversation about this but I guess not.

I'm confused, you care about gaming, yet your not willing to support the PS3 because of the fanboys on a random website? Contradictions are fun aren't they? ;)

I'll tell you the reason to "support" the PS3, because it has tons of amazing(my own opinion of course) titles and its not going to stop any time soon, any fan of gaming would clearly see the value in the PS3 and want one for the games it can give them access to, and not shun it because of how others act. Thinking for yourself and not worrying about everyone else's judgments is always the right way to go.

Microsft is doing EXACTLY what they are supposed to..

All the whining after E3..article after article on the internet..about how the 360 lost..

But what happened..

360 Slim sales pushed the console temporarily over the Wii at one point..it's obviously a success and it isn't even the holiday..

Kinect gobbled up the entire media discussion since E3..and the media blitz for it hasn't even begun

Halo Reach turned out to be bigger than ANYONE thought..Bungie's reveal of Forge world etc. is poising the game to break every record in Halo franchise history..

The 2010 plan is flawless

360 Slim..rivaling sales of it's best years
Halo Reach..Biggest game of 2010
Fable 3..The biggest seling exclusive RPG this gen
Kinect..Peripheral will completely sell out it's inventory

All add up to it's best holiday in the 360's history..

Gears 3 will obviously be one of the biggest selling games of 2011..it launches 10 MONTHS after it's E3 debut..and only 2 month prior to the next E3

So why would Microsoft announces a thousand games that won't even launch for over an entire year?

Silly..just like these rehashed articles..

It's a beautiful time to be a gamer..

Evil

MisterNiwa5756d ago

Beautiful to be a gamer? You just kept on with sales and sales and sales.

Excuse me, but do you play sales?

Philoctetes5756d ago

"The 2010 plan is flawless

360 Slim..rivaling sales of it's best years
Halo Reach..Biggest game of 2010

So your idea of a "flawless" year is a new SKU, two exclusives, and a broken motion control system? I'd hate to see what a bad year looks like.

MorganX5756d ago

Not sure who it is that says a game has to be exclusive to sell. Just happens Gears and Halo are exclusive to Xbox. But right now I'm looking forward to Castlevania: LoS, NBA 2k11, and still haven't bought Madden 11 yet. And of course, all my XBLA games. I actually don't do Halo. After that Brink.

I never actually hear Xbox people crying for exclusives, they just play games. What am I missing? Of course I do have both. I originally bought an Xbox for Gears, and PS3 for Blu-Ray. Most games today are just clones of the genre leaders anyway.

Now, if someone gets and exclusive on Killer Instinct HD and Donkey Kong HD I might get on the exclusive bandwagon. As long as it's not Nintendo /s

EVILDEAD3605755d ago

@ MisterNiwa

'Beautiful to be a gamer? You just kept on with sales and sales and sales.
Excuse me, but do you play sales?'

Actually I play games..100+ for the 360 before 2010 even started..

In fact, I play every system games and I repeat it's a beutiful time to be a gamer..

LOL @ the fan bloggers and the haters pretending online that the 360 is on it's deathbed after E3 because they announced that the most successful franchises that have EVER been on the console are being released back-to- back.

But, then you prove them wrong by instead of just pretending that your games are better than another game..you just state how well they are received by the install base..

But when you do that they whine..bu-bu-but you play sales..

The hypocrisy is when an amazing game like Alan Wake doesnt sell as much..then you have article after article saying it should have been on the PS3 because it would have sold..LOL

@ Philoctetes

So your idea of a "flawless" year is a new SKU, 'two exclusives, and a broken motion control system? I'd hate to see what a bad year looks like.'

Yup..that exactly what my post E3 idea of a flawless is..

Sony sold a whole lot of PS3s last year on the same concept..

2009 PS3..New SKU (Slim)..reduced price..one exclusive (Uncharted 2)

2010 PS3..2 exclusives (GT5 and LBP2) + Move and casual games launch

The 360 is following the same formula to success..but doing it ALL in one year

2010 (post E3) New SKU (360S) + 2 exclusives (REACH and FABLE) + Kinext and casual games launch

So hate all you wan't..won't mean a thing to the success of the console this Fall, Holiday, or beyond..

It's still good to be a gamer

I think MS do have some new IPs in the Mix but they are not telling us anything because this year is all about Halo Reach and Kinect.

Also 360 games seem to have more legs than the PS games look at games like Halo 3 Gears of war there are still thousands of gamers playing them each day where when you look at KZ2 and uc2 it only has hundreds playing them then the games they have had this year as 1st party are mainly have no online play.

I dont think the 360 is in decline as there are so many new consoles being sold and why would they refresh the hardware if they were going to drop the console.

It took sony a few years to get off the starting blocks with the PS3 games are now they are brings some very good games out where MS has had the games from the start but they are now trying to widen the xbox brand to the none gamers with kinect so they have made this year all about Kinect. I think next year once the Kinect buzz has gotten around the 360 will go back to doing what it dose best.

Also as for no exclusives there are aload of exclusives coming out for it but they are all Kinect titals.

FACTUAL evidence5756d ago (Edited 5756d ago )

WTH...It's always been make or break with the 360. Not even being a fanboy. You had the failure rate, The over priced online service, lack of titles. It's always been like that. 360 was/is always heavily reliant on Multi-plats it's not even funny. Being an xbox360 only owner is a slap in the face, when you can get all that on the other console plus a shit load of EXCLUSIVES.

IDK, but the only thing that shines on that console is a gears, or halo title. If Halo wasn't coming out this year, it would be 09 for the 360 all over again, crappy!....Wait not being an ass, but it is 09 all over again for the 360..another halo title for another year. MS really needs to put their money where the games are instead of their mouth, because they do a lot of talking, and less game making.

lowcarb5756d ago

"Being an xbox360 only owner is a slap in the face, when you can get all that on the other console plus a shit load of EXCLUSIVES."

Please tell me your kidding right? I think if anyone is doing talking it's yourself.

Immortal3215756d ago (Edited 5756d ago )

it's not about the sales, its important for the developers, but no as important to the gamers.

see, when you're a gamer, you should worry about one thing, games. it really doesn't matter if it's multiplat or exclusive.

clearly the new generation of gamers care about one thing, popularity, and in their definition: a game that sells multi millions is the better game.

you got these journalist confusing us, using words like, true gamer. In their definition a true gamer is: a gamer who appreciate anything about gaming.
which is bullsht because, a true gamer is the opposite of that. you can't give me crap and expect me to wag my tail, no! I will throw that crap back in your face.

@lowcarb

look at it like this. if your a 360 only owner who is well aware or informed of the games that's coming out, then yes I agree to what the statement, "Being an xbox360 only owner is a slap in the face, when you can get all that on the other console plus a shit load of EXCLUSIVES."

clearly that statement is on the one side point of view instead of the other. Now if you wasn't well aware and is not informed of the games coming out, then no, I disagree to the statement because, most likely your buying a game to play games exclusive or not.

Yakuza 5 hasn't been announced yet.

We don't even know the new Yakuza game is titled Ryu Ga Gotoku 5 (Yakuza 5) or not...

I think what you mean is Yakuza 4 English version in Spring 2011.

pippoppow5756d ago

Look, the 360 never was about exclusives. It was a cheaper alternative to ps3 and it's year head start with the help of xbl gained it traction early on. It is clear which console offers the best hardware and plentiful great games. Games being the most important. The only high quality exclusive is halo. Not sure about gears3 publishing rights but if ms doesn't haave it locked up it may at least wind up on the pc, maybe even ps3. If ms has it locked up then that's 2 exclusives. Crytek's supposed exclusive will most likely be a timed exclusve but if it isn't then that makes 3. Ms has been in the console arena for 10 yrs and this small amount of exclusives are all they have. Good for them their fans aren't demanding.

Launching fall of 2011, alongside a new Halo. They will want the first to market advantage again. Gears 3 will be their swansong, but hopefully (going by what they've said) they will continue support for the 360 for another year or two.

That's my guess anyhow.

The Meerkat5756d ago

I would love to see that happen, but I don't think it will.

They need until fall 2012 to get the New Halo game done properly.

Omega45756d ago

Unless Kinects is a MASSIVE failure, I'm not talking small, like doesn't sell a million then that could happen. But if its successful you won't even hear of the new xbox, let alone it be released for about 3 years, cause it will alienate their new casual audience.

Rhythmattic5756d ago

Omega4

Agreed.

I Believe as nintendo did, Ms will capture a Casual Audience, and in no way is that tiny.

RealityCheck5756d ago

If they wanted to, Microsoft could keep the 360 around for the casual market (price reduced + kinect bundle = casual win) and at the same time launch a new console for the core gamers.

mcstorm5756d ago

I agree If Kinect sells well yes it will keep the next xbox from being released for at lest 3 years or more and as for the 360 has not exclusives or new IP's well they are wrong.

Halo Reach
Fable3
Gears of ware 3
Forza Kinect
Your Shape: Fitness Evolved
Kinect Sports
Kinectimals
Kinect Adventures
Star Wars (Kinect)
Dance Central
Kinect Joy Ride
Sonic Free Riders
Zumba Fitness
+ many more games we do not know about yet.

lowcarb5756d ago

Your right on the money! 360 has plenty of exclusives built from the ground up to take advantage of Kinect coming this year. Of course people will disagree but no matter what it's definitely not a tacked on experience like the competition is offering.

mcstorm5756d ago

I love this site I get 5 disagrees but not one persons tells me why they disagree. Fan bays face it you were wrong 360 has got exclusives weather you like them or not. I really dont know why people take sides with consoles because at the end of the day it all about games and having fum.

Qui-Gon Jim5756d ago

But yeah, i agree. E311 could see the next x-box announced with Kinect 2 built in. That would explain the lack of games over the next year. Developers are instead starting work on the next console. They set the 360 up as an alternative to the Wii for casual games and launch the next console for the core, then let them coexist for awhile until the new console goes down in price to be attractive to the casuals.

palaeomerus5755d ago

They'll launch the year after they announce and they'll announce at E3. So the earliest you'll see a new console from MS is 2012.

big_silky5756d ago (Edited 5756d ago )

I think MS is long past the make or break point, they've proven themselves.

I predict rumblings of a new console later next year, unveiling at E3 '12 and lauch that fall.

Qui-Gon Jim5756d ago

If it's true that dev kits are out, that means developers are changing focus to the new console now. If you think 2011 looks like a dry year for 360 games, 2012 would be an absolute dust bowl. Their core audience would lose patience with them and move over to PS3. If they announce in 2011, though, that new console would be hanging out in front of them to keep their attention away from others.
