Did Anyone Win This Generation?

Think back to the years 2004 and 2005. The Playstation 2 ruled the video game universe and nobody had any concept of quality handheld gaming beyond Pokemon, which wasn't exactly pretty to look at. All the analysts and fans were picking their favorites based on E3 keynote speakers and pure hearsay. But five years later I feel like it's fair to look back and figure out who actually won this generation. Was it Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft? Was it anybody?

lovemyps35728d ago

lol thats a funny avatar! ;)

Joule5728d ago

no the generation is not over.

5727d ago
-Alpha5727d ago (Edited 5727d ago )

Yeah, pretty much the gamers.

Financially, Nintendo, and since this is by far the most important, Nintendo has succeeding tremendously.

Microsoft did a great job gaining marketshare from last gen, but they used a double sided sword by releasing such a faulty product.

Sony lost a lot of marketshare, but has definitely the most stable future of all three.

gamingdroid5726d ago

I think you got it spot on, but if I had to crown a winner Nintendo hands down. A company don't really care about your feelings, your loyalty or your dedication to their product. They just want your money and Nintendo gots lot of money this generation.

MS and Sony has been bleeding money since the start of this generation and is just about to recover into break even territory is my guess.

rockleex5726d ago (Edited 5726d ago )

Nintendo is making TONS of profit.

Microsoft gained a lot of market share.

Sony providing the best hardware and games.

Last generation PS2 had the sales/profit, and the most AAA games. The hardware was a 3 way tie as they each had their own specific strengths. So Sony was the clear winner in everyone's eyes.

You just couldn't ignore the PS2. You NEEDED one. 9 out of 10 games you wanted to play were exclusively on the PS3.

While this generation gamers could ignore the Wii's games, and gravitate towards the HD consoles. But the problem is its mainly the same games across the PS3 and 360!

-Alpha5726d ago

Yup, Sony and MS have both been bleeding green while Nintendo has been sucking blood like a Twilight vampire.

Also, I meant to say "most important to the companies" above as I don't particularly think profits is the most important thing for me personally.

DaTruth5726d ago (Edited 5726d ago )

The whole marketshare thing is unproven, as there are few 360 owners still on their first 360 and lots with 2, 3, 4 and even five.

Obviously not all of those replacements count as a sale, but MS has really skewed this area to the point of non-recognition and it just has to be thrown out for this gen.

Last gen = 120M PS2, 24M XBOX and 22M Gamecube. 166M Total after six years.

This gen = 73M Wii, 39M PS3 and 42M 360. 154M Total after four years.

This is a statistical dead heat and we are only four years into this gen, considering that last gen was about 6 years in total, there is a number problem here. We know there are people who bought their first console this gen and many around the globe in nations that are unable to even purchase a next gen console yet.

Imperator5726d ago

The only good year for the 360 was 2007 imo. 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 all belong to the PS3 (and Sony isn't even done announcing new titles).

tinybigman5726d ago

me as a gamer who owns all 3 consoles and the great games for them.

Well, at least the gamers who don't disagree with you. There are a lot of gamers out there who are losing out on what it means to be a gamer.

"Well, it turns out the PS3 wasn't nearly as powerful as Sony made it out to be. It looks fairly similar to the 360 in every capacity. Sure, you could install Linux on the system, but the internet browser is woefully bad as are many of the other computer features on the system. Sony stepped up its game with first party titles in this generation like God of War III, Uncharted 1 and 2 as well as a couple Ratchet and Clanks. But really they didn't have a fantastic game like Halo or Mario. It was just a bunch of good games and customizable ones that are fun for 5 minutes like ModNation Racers, a blatant MarioKart ripoff, and LittleBigPlanet. Sure it's fun to watch Sackboy play Sweet Child of Mine and dress him up like Henry XIII, but that gets old fast. Their games obviously outsold Nintendo's for the most part but the system didn't come close. It was a distant third. The people who predicted that Sony would dominate again and still be synonymous with video games were clearly mistaken."

*nose bleeds profusely

lovemyps35728d ago (Edited 5728d ago )

lol a fantastic game like halo or mario? what about demons souls, uncharted 2, metal gear solid 4, littlebigplanet, those games were incredible, even got game of the year. i think the author means AN ICON OF AN IMAGE...like xbox has halo, nintendo has mario...ps3 has all types of icons. ;) crazy article.

Tommykrem5728d ago (Edited 5728d ago )

Now you're just talking crap. Firstly, you can't install Linux on the PS3. Have you been paying any attention the last six months?
And no fantastic games? PS3 had Game of the Year last year (Uncharted 2, obviously... and Demon's Souls actually), and the year before (GTAIV and Fallout 3 took a lot of GotY's in 2008, but MGS4 and LBP took even more)

Two out of three of my favourite games this generation are PS3 exclusives (again LBP and MGS4) so don't come here and say that PS3 doesn't have any fantastic games. LBP gets old fast? I'm still playing it, and incredible levels just keep on coming. You can even play LBP as an FPS now!
ModNation Racers is a Mario kart rip-off!? Mario Kart wasn't even the first kart racing game, and ModNation is the first game in years that adds a lot to the genre.Yes, Wii and 360 has sold more.
The generation isn't over though, and the PS3 is still very expensive compared to its competitors.

What I meant to say is that in my eyes PS3 is the console of choice this generation, but that's in MY eyes. Unlike last generation there's not a clear winner. If you could kill just to play Super Mario Galaxy then Wii is your choice, if a near perfect online experience and Halo/Gears of War, not to mention Forza is your brand of Vodka, then 360 is your choice. And if you like me, just simply need GT5 (or any other PS3 exclusive) then PS3 is your console of choice.

So don't come here and tell people what to think!

RyuCloudStrife5726d ago (Edited 5726d ago )

"Mario Kart wasn't even the first kart racing game"

Mario Kart goes so far back to the snes.. http://101videogames.files....

Wii has twice the install base of PS3.. Kinda hard to not say it isnt over unless you are a fanboy or just ignorant to how gaming has worked.

Shadow Flare5728d ago

Soad was just quoting the article btw, that wasn't his own opinion, so I dunno why people are disagreeing with him.

I mean, that part of the article was all tripe but I hated this sentence the most:

"Sure it's fun to watch Sackboy play Sweet Child of Mine and dress him up like Henry XIII, but that gets old fast."

That's his summary of lbp. Sooooooort of missing the point of the game. Sort of forgetting you can build entire levels, make really complex levels and build practically anything. It's one of the most amazing games ever. And this article is one of the most amazingly BS articles ever

SOAD5728d ago

Pardon me you buffoons, but if you actually read the article you would know that the large paragraph in my post is an excerpt from said article, and that I am clearly showing disdain for the excerpt and the article overall with my short comment to the excerpt on the bottom of my post. However, you fanboy idiots neglected to observe the quotation marks encompassing the paragraph in my post, and instead chose to comment with your pathetic roflcopter bullshit responses, attacking me for sharing the same point of you as yourselves.

And you, lovemyps3, are just another mutation of an existing fanboy. Why don't you stick to your other account, eh? Are you down to your final bubble?

Not withstanding that this generation isn't over yet:

- if you're going for sales numbers on the console itself, the Wii is winning thus far.

- if you're going for games, hmmm... many arguments can be made that if you're talking about the "biggest" AAA games versus the "most" AAA games you're looking at a mix between the 360's biggest title game "Halo" (I don't know if a bigger game has came out yet that matched or could match the sales numbers of Halo games: GT5 doesn't count because it's not out yet). The "most" AAA games were easily on the PS3, as they own their own studios and put out a lot of high quality titles.

-If you're talking about the tech, the PS3 has it. No offense to any other console.

Not to downgrade the blu-Ray, the built in ports and wi-fi, and the low failure rate for such a powerful console, but the Cell Processor hasn't even been fully realized in games and a lot of people will tell you that. The reason for the slow advancement on The Cell is that there is no back-library for the Cell. PC compliant code on the Wii and the 360 has a rich library. The Cell probably could go another ten years before it's officially "maxed out". Between that enigma that is known as "Lair" which is so far and still one of the most advanced games out (even if it's a little clunky in some small spots) and Saboteur's PS3 anti-aliasing with steady advances in between from other developers, once this knowledge is pooled together, greater advances will come even faster.

Focker-4205728d ago

This gen is far from over, but as of right now the PS3 has a distant lead. Thats of course my opinion. If you're a gamer and you don't have a PS3, shame on you.

Report: Sony Is Turning Its Back on Porting PlayStation Games to PC

Sony is said to be pulling back on releasing PlayStation games on PC, and this starts with Ghost of Yotei and Saros.

Elda62d ago

If true then the PC elitists will no longer be saying..."I'll wait to play it on PC where it'll play best" I'm guessing the money Sony spends porting & profiting from PC isn't worth it. Making PS first party solely exclusive again to their consoles will make their consoles more relevant to buy especially if their output of first party titles are good.

Outside_ofthe_Box62d ago

A certain spamtastic account will not be pleased if this is true.

This is another basic logic scenario. We've seen both extremes playing out right now. Would you rather be in Xbox's or Nintendo's position right now? Sony already had a working formula, stick to it.

fr0sty62d ago

Sony released games on PC to try to make a few extra bucks... Valve (and possibly MS, if the new Xbox ever sees the light of day) attempted to use this to allow you to play PlayStation games on other consoles, so instead of making Sony a few extra bucks, it's now costing them good money... so this only makes sense.

CrashMania62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

All those players who claim they were happy to wait an eternity for every game, will now suddenly be saying all those games are/will be crap and they were never interested.

Elda62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

Of course they will...lol. It looks like they'll never get to play PS exclusive games or they'll give in & buy a PS.

More like people were realizing what wasn't worth it was buying a PS5 to play games that eventually came to another platform. The constant excuses the entire gen to try to lessen the butt hurt y'all were feeling. Let's be for real here ladies and gents y'all were bothered by the fact most of these games were making their way to PC and judging by the replies y'all STILL butthurt. Trying to make it sound like waiting 6 months to a year was the worst thing when most people don't care cause why should they? Who's in a rush to play mostly SP games when they know they can play it on the platform they prefer? How exactly does it hurt y'all personally? Besides getting your pride hurt cause SONY making you look childish for being so loyal to a brand?

If they're pulling support it's because they know that long term they can't convince people to buy a PS if they can get their games on PC. It's that simple. You really think having an extra platform to gain more profit from somehow hurts them financially? Nah, it's cause they can't convince people to throw another 600-700 bucks at new hardware when their current console gen has barely been taken full advantage of. All the conveniences of a console are on PC now, and you aren't locked into a cycle where the hardware you buy becomes obsolete every 6 years. And the new hardware you buy receives games that are built off software made for the gen before.

Of course people rather buy these games on PC if they already own a PC, makes no sense at all to invest in a console if this continues. And it will infact continue if dev cycles keep taking most of the gen to complete development.

Dexterio62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

@Inverno
"All the conveniences of a console are on PC now."
Including piracy, hackers and cheaters? hmmm...

"Of course people rather buy these games on PC"
Yeah, digital only lol. People buy physicals on consoles, which you rarely have on PC.

You PC guys are really something. Being snobs for no reason at all lol.

derek62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

@Inverno, that was long tearful rant, you feel better now? Lol. Nobody cares about the pc gaming community the orphans of the gaming industry. Even Nvidia has abandoned you, lol. Now go play "pizza making express" on your $10,000 rig, nobody cares pc gamer.

Elda62d ago

It's working for PS seeing their console has been selling fabulously lately. If this is" true" it's evident Sony has decided porting their games to PC is just not worth it.

ravens5262d ago

🤣. Just get a PS if you dont have one. 🤣

Neonridr62d ago

I agree, I have a gaming PC along with a Pro and a Switch 2. I like choosing where I want to play my games. No I won't cry if I HAVE to play a title on my PlayStation. But it's nice having the option to play on my PC if I should choose.

That doesn't make me elitist or a fool in any way. My backlog of games is a country mile long. So if I can't get to a game at launch, getting it at PC down the road for a discount would be a nice option from time to time.

I'm super glad Sony's going back to what they used to do for 30 yrs, porting games to pee zee was a huge mistake just for a couple of millions extra at most and it only tarnished the brand/platform. Bunch of ungrateful ''pee zee elitists'' anyway, always demanding and whining as if Sony is owes them a port. You want a Big Mac? then go to McDonalds and get one, don't expect Taco Bell to sell you one. Common sense, that's how everything works in this world.

This feels like a bad move by Sony. The economy isn’t strong enough for most people to justify owning both a PC and a PlayStation. I’ve gotten used to playing on PC with a controller anyway. It’s a bit disappointing, but I’m not going back to consoles unless the economy improves significantly.

Michiel198961d ago

I'll wait to play it on PC where it'll play best, just a bit later on an emulator with higher res textures higher fps better controls and for free

z2g61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

It’s bc they don’t sell well. The cost to port vs revenue generated isn’t worth it. This kinda just shows that it’s specifically PlayStation people that love PlayStation exclusives - not necessarily gamers as a whole. That makes sense. Buy into what brands you like. PC has a whole universe of games that aren’t on console. Much bigger market. It doesn’t necessarily mean those interests are interchangeable.

I have a ps5 and play those games on it. But why are you thanking god? What relief does this give you for people getting an old game a year or so later?

RauLeCreuset62d ago

"What relief does this give you for people getting an old game a year or so later?"

There's legitimate reason to find relief in the idea that PS is refocusing on its ecosystem and not jeopardizing it by doubling down on a strategy that could put it in a similar position as the current state of Xbox.

If true, it also relieves us of another "Sony too" deflection people have been arguing as a form of cope for years after years of people arguing that Xbox would surpass PS and Nintendo because those two weren't emulating the strategy of the only one of the big three that has never won a single console generation.

That's the cycle. Xbox has reinvented the wheel and done something the soon to be obsolete PS can't replicate, until it blows up in their faces. Then, it's "Sony too."

SimpleDad62d ago

Because that stupid decision kills consoles.
Everything is an Xbox, and now nothing is an Xbox.

People downloading torrents to play spiderman on their steam deck, and we all knew it.

I'm definitely not buying a Steam Machine for $2k over in scalper land just to play a settings game every time I turn it on.

HellspawnPR198161d ago

@SimpleDad not if done correctly. It killed Xbox because putting games day 1 on GamePass is cannibilizing their sales.

Amplitude61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

Thank God people that have gaming PCs now get to play infinitely inferior versions of two good games per year exclusive to the hyper locked down non-upgradable overpriced subscription-addicted Sony gaming PC.
Still got my PS5, but only for AstroBot, Wolverine, and whatever the next Ratchet game is gonna be. This console cycle has been absolute garbage. Forcing consumers to buy a piece of tech this lame in 2026 after they've shut down all their good studios is brutal. RIP Bluepoint.

maelstromb61d ago

Agreed. This has been an absolute lame-duck Sony console generation. Very few worthwhile titles for overpriced hardware. I'll continue to enjoy the plethora of endless game titles available through Steam and other platforms while Sony-only fans remain stuck in their ecosystem waiting for the next big title to drop once every 2 years. Have fun with that.

Well, we have the data in front of us, don't we. Not to mention how extensive Sony's data's got to be.

They've tried.

Huge revenue wasn't generated (don't get me wrong - they did make billions, but you get it), Steam got a cut, Xbox got a cut, PS5 is trailing ~2 million units behind PS4.

The paycheck for, but also potential harm to the remaining years of PS5 and the release of PS6, just wasn't it.

It's absolutely logical if true.

And people shouldn't forget Sony'd simply return to the strategy they've been following for 4/5 of Playstation's history.

62d ago Replies(4)
wesnytsfs61d ago

Good luck with that, Sony wa losing money on their AAA exclusives since their ecosystem was not generating enough to revenue to cover their costs. Just another stupid move almsot as dumb as their live service push.

dveio61d ago

You think Sony made losses with God of War, The Last of Us, Ghost of, Horizon or Spiderman?

Huh.

wesnytsfs61d ago

@dveio, I hope those games made money they were good games. Horizon Forbidden West cost $212 million, while The Last of Us Part II cost $220 million, excluding marketing. Much rather see more platforms instead of them raising prices to cover the game since its lmited to one specific console.

Reaper22_62d ago

I call BS. Too much money to lose.

MDTunkown62d ago

Goal of exclusives is to sell the console and not the game

Reaper22_62d ago

Lol.. that makes no sense. That logic puts all publishers and developers out of business. The majority of people buy games on the system they prefer. Exclusives are only a tiny fraction of games sold. Selling 15 million games beats selling 2 million consoles.Consoles stagnate but games dont. How is sony trying to sell their console by putting God of War on PC? The overall goal is to make money and the games keep the money coming. The majority of the time consoles are sold for a loss. And If it is making money its not that much. Especially in the first few years after release. All the enjoyment is coming from experiencing the game.

wesnytsfs61d ago

Consoles do not make money until late in their lives games make the money.

ThePacemaker62d ago

All this BS as you say contributes just 1.5% to PlayStation’s total revenue

Reaper22_62d ago (Edited 62d ago )

Actually its closer to 4%. Playstation has grossed over 1.5 billion on steam to date. So its not BS. At the end of the day, its not about what you want. They are going to do what they need to in order to increase profits. Did they ask you for permission before they shut down Bluepoint studios? No.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro61d ago

What do you expect releasing a game 2 years late??

BlaqMagiq162d ago (Edited 62d ago )

We get it. You hate PS is no longer putting their exclusives on PC while your favorite platform is giving theirs away to PC and other platforms.

Reaper22_62d ago

Thats ignorant. First of all nothing has been confirmed. I really dont care where sony put their games because I own a ps5 and a pc. So theres no hate. And for the record, I dont have a favorite platform but I do have a preference. There is a difference.

BlaqMagiq161d ago

Everything you said is BS. If you didn't care where they put their games you would've never made this comment. And you've made it clear you CLEARLY have a favorite platform. Just because you own a ps5 and pc doesn't negate that.

Reaper22_61d ago (Edited 61d ago )

Can you confirm that they are no longer putting their games on PC? If you cant then your whole argument is just nonsense. I dont care where they put their games. Part of the reason is i dont like all their games. Just like it dont like all games.on other platforms. I called BS on this report because its not based on facts to back it up. Maybe you care a little too much about it which imo is a waste of time. LIke I said before its not about you want. They dont need our permission to do anything. So if they do stop putting games.on PC it wont be because that what playstation fanboys want. It will be for business reasons. Thats why I said its BS. Why would they turn down opportunities to make money. For the record, games are developed on dev kits which are basically PC anyway. They only have to gain.
