Does anyone really want 3D TV?

Which? Convo: We’ve all been ogling 3D movies at the cinema. Avatar broke box-office records, but it looks like consumers are happier to spend a tenner on the 3D experience than shell out a grand for it in their living room. Make yourself heard by voting in the poll.

But would you cough up the cash for one?

NIRVANArazor5742d ago

not now. but maybe in the future.

Dee_915742d ago

can anybody afford a 3d tv

Dramscus5742d ago

I do and I'll get one eventually.

Why would you not want to watch stuff in 3d.

It's new technology the prices will come down it's not like their locked in at really high.

A Cupcake for Gabe5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

I am getting one with my taxes. it'll be in feb 2011 and there will plenty of game by then to fill my 3d library like killzone 3, lbp2, gt5 and such. Most 3D blurays will be releasing this christmas as well. I would buy one now, but we're moving and that costs a lot.

EDIT: Thanks for the pointless stealth disagree

Ares84PS35742d ago

Let me tell you. It's amazing. Mostly people who have never seen it in action say no to 3D. People who can afford it say yes.

It just comes down to how much it is.

But I hate the fact that if someone can't afford something they start to bash it even though they have never even experienced it or if they have just bash it because they can't afford it.

A 3DTV costs as much as an HDTV of the same size did just one year ago.

How about you people stop complaining, get off your asses and check out a 3DTV in action. Play a few games on it. Watch a movie on it and than come back and talk BS about it.

Anon19745742d ago

What are 3D tv's? A couple of hundred extra? Quite frankly, I've been amazed that 3D tv's are as cheap as they are. I'm used to new tech being prohibitively expensive right out of the gate. You can get a 46" 3D TV for under two thousand.

To me, 3D is as important a technological step as when TV's first went color. Don't think so? Try walking around with one eye covered all day and see how much you miss depth perception. And for gaming, 3D gaming was something I never thought I'd see in my lifetime.

The only thing holding me back at the moment is I'm a home theater projector guy. I'm waiting for the projectors to come out supporting the new 3D standards, then I'm all over it. I'm not ready to give up my 92" screen yet.

CYCLEGAMER5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

Have you actually priced out a 3d tv or are you just going by what people say?

3dtv's are currently not much more expensive than a high end 3dtv. With that being said if you are not in the market for a new tv, then don't go out and buy one, but if you are looking for a new tv then it makes no sense not to buy a 3dtv, they are only about $200 more. I bought my 46" samsung 3dtv for $1200 bucks with a pair of glasses. So NO EXCUSES (if you are looking for a tv)

gaffyh5742d ago

Yes I definitely want one, but I don't want to buy one right now because I'm waiting for non-glasses versions that are coming very soon.

Baka-akaB5742d ago

3d tv arent as expensive as most people think

blackpanther255742d ago

it is the new ultra thin versions and it came with a free 3D bluray player and two free 3d glasses.

The sweetest thing is that regular HD looks beautiful and runs better

rockleex5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

Instead of the lowest ones.

People see that $6,000 60+ inch Samsung 3DTV and they automatically apply that same price to every other 3DTV without doing research.

@gaffyh

Good luck with glassless 3DTVs. They won't be matching glassed 3DTVs in price, quality, or viewing angles any time soon. At least not for another two years.

Once they do though, I'll be sure to get one. Just don't expect any good ones to come out soon.

ChineseDemocracy5742d ago

I was skeptical at first, but then I played Motorstorm (think it was Pacific Rift) on a 3d tv, and it was amazing! It just felt way more immersive, in terms of gaming, I think 3d is a great idea.

gaffyh5742d ago

@rockleex - Then I guess I'm waiting two years, the glasses versions work out far more expensive for me because i have a large family and the glasses alone would end up costing almost £1000.

USEYOURFIST5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

in uk 3dtv is £999 or £45per month on credit with 3 glasses and 3d bluray player not much to me i will be getting one of the 2nd gen sets tho for less crosstalk.

o by the way did you hear aston martins are now rubbish as i cant afford one, and space ships suck as i cant buy one and ps3 sucks as . . . . /s

trolls stop saying things are crap coz you cant afford it, if you dont like it fair enough but ive seen no VALID argument bar price.

GrandTheftZamboni5742d ago

Graphics are overrated. That's why I play my PS3 on 13 inch black and white.

Petro5742d ago

gaffyh: Are you ready to wait 5-10 years for glasses free 3D tv that can be seen by whole family? I could get 3D FullHD video projector for 434 € with glasses.

Acer X110 300 €
NVIDIA GEFORCE 3D VISION 134 €

The Lazy One5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

The Acer 110 isn't full hd. It's native at like 800X600. The 1110 is native at 720p.

There are no decent 3d projectors at 1080p for <$1000 or even $2000.

Petro5742d ago

The Lazy One: thanks for correcting :) Crappy website that sells those says its FullHD and well it seems to be a trick they use to sell these crappy projectors to people who doesn't read all specifications of a device.

nveenio5741d ago

The next TV I buy will be 3D. I may not buy one right away, but I don't think Sony expects people to. They want the adoption rate as fast as possible. In my area, 3D TVs are already as cheap as HDTVs were 2 years ago.

ji32005741d ago

AFTER I SAW FEW PS3 GAMES ON 3D AT FRIENDS HOUSE IM AMAZED!!!!! I WLL BUY IT WHEN I GET THE MONEY!!!!!!!!

True enough @Dmarc ...but I'm interested to see the outcome of the poll. I expect most will say in two or five years.

Kurt Russell5742d ago

I wouldn't watch 3D TV or films... but 3D gaming would be nice, not for the current price though.

On a side note I have a friend who is blind in one eye... He won't be getting 3D ;)

GuruStarr785742d ago

Technology in at home tvs is too new......In the not-so-distant future, the tech will improve like it does with everything else....glasses free tvs are right around the corner (THIS Year!) and the prices will go down...just like they do with every new piece of new tech.

the-show-stopper5742d ago

the thing with glasses free 3dtv is only a limited number of ppl can watch whereas if u get a 3dtv that needs glasses then the limited amount of ppl that can watch it is limited by the number of glasses

mantisimo5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

Who keeps saying glassless TV is just around the corner or is coming out this year.

It might be coming but the tech is very poor for family use and only works in several "sweet spots" move out of a sweet spot and the screen becomes blurry and has artifacts all over it ( and you don't have to move much for this to happen).

Also the TV manufacturer that is releasing them(chinese)has to run every source item through software before it hits your tv.

They gonna do that with every source? They need a relationship and agreements from every source of TV/Games/Film producers before they can do it.

Samsung who also developed an almost identical lenticular monitor are not releasing to the public because of both of these issues and their monitor will only be used in areas such as malls where they can control the viewers viewing angle.

I know others have said they are trying to perfect the holy grail but for it to work at full quality it's still a long way off.

Sorry as much as I'd love glassless it is not (at present)anywhere near as good as with glasses.

The Lazy One5742d ago

@mantisimo

They are making TV's that adjust the sweet spots based on where the people actually are using face tracking.

mantisimo5741d ago

Thanks for the heads up.

Questions though will it face track 8+ people (as often happens in our house) what if you are lying down with your shoulder/cover etc covering your face from that angle?

Seraphemz5742d ago

The tv s aren't that much more...what's expensive is having to get a compatible surround sound system if you already spent a bunch on one.

FragGen5742d ago

I do, too. That way the last thing I see before my freaking potentially life threatening seizure will look totally awesome. :(

FragGen5742d ago

Expensive GLASSES SUCK. The current Rev0 3D TVs that are out now, will be another "also ran" technology. The glasses free solution is going to win. If there's one thing that digital media/mp3 taught us is that after a certain plateau is reached *convenience* WINS.

milohighclub5741d ago

expensive glasses are pimpin. by the way i got 2 free pairs with the tv, you can buy a pair on amazon for £40

bustamove5742d ago

I may get one in the future soon but who knows.

Baka-akaB5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

@gaffyh

enough witht such myth already , you can find very good glasses between 49-60$ , and you'd even pay them cheaper with a bundles of them

bjornbear5742d ago

not yet anyway, before i even consider a 3D TV i need to upgrade to an HDTV xD!!!

then i'll consider a 3DTV.

+ not that important for gaming.

milohighclub5741d ago

yes it is. go play it then come back n say it, trust me you'll be drooling at the first glance.

JsonHenry5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

I do. And I will purchase one soon as "3D" finally hits later this fall/winter and I can see reviews of who has the best 3D and which ones play the nicest with my PC as well as my consoles.

@bjornbear - if money is tight and that is why you haven't upgraded do yourself a favor and just get a decent Monitor instead of a TV.

DA_SHREDDER5742d ago

http://www.bestbuy.com/site...

There ya go. a 50 inch 600 hrz 3-D plasma for under a grand. I know it only does 720p, but 99% of 360 games are under 720p and 3-D can only be done in 720p so I dont see how pricing or anything else is an issue. Just admit it, you 360 only dudes are just jealous. The ps3 has more games, bigger games, prettier games, more variety, they do 3-D, and pretty soon will do PSmove. The problem isn't if 3-D is worth it. The problem is getting all you noobs to realize that its the future. You guys were in denial about bluray and obviously this issue isn't any different.

spacetattoo5741d ago (Edited 5741d ago )

The tech is there. 21 inch tv made by toshiba, not sold, made, 3D can be seen without glasses. I see no need to buy until this tech surfaces. I also want to wait until they bet the crud out of each other in compition.
I also want to see all the bugs, problems come to light and get fixed. Just like the problems early on with plasma. I want to know what and who to buy from. I got a 40 inch samsung tv. I've had no problems but i waited to see what to buy and what not to.

Samsung all the way.

SO GET RIDE OF THE GLASSES AND I THINK THEY WILL SELL LIKE HOT CAKES. People don't want to sit down and go, oh Sh!t were are my glasses. On top of that, Some now that the tech of not wearing glasses is right around the corner and will wait for it.

@DA_SHREDDER - wow cowboy, go flame another article.PLUS 3d is not going to go into to full effect until next generation, so what are you blabbing about. We already got wii so I won't be getting move, both systems have there perks.

XBOX ALSO HAS MORE GAMES, 981 GAMES COMPARED TO 821 PS3 GAMES. Don't get me wrong ps3 is a great system but people like make it look bad.
Always talking out of your arse. buy both and release they are both worth your money, broke arse.

I see where

gotta love this argument... a samsung 46" 3D tv is on sale vor $1299.. is that really too much... really? What were regular hdtvs going for last year, or the year before that?

IdahoPkwy5742d ago

Agree, not all 3D televisions are out of the consumer price range. I love how people look at a price of an item, then say I don't want it. What's the fun in that? Where's the imagining or thinking big?

lolzers5742d ago

What if he doesn't want to spend $1299 on a 46" tv and can get one for much less without 3d?

IdahoPkwy5742d ago

Thats a different "want". In my opinion, you can absolutely want something, yet not want or be able to do so so.

Example, I want a smartphone, really bad actually. I don't want to pay the data package monthly fee associated with it. Still doesn't mean I don't want one though.

lolzers5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

Ok, how about this argument - He has 7 people in his household, to watch a film with all the people in his household he needs 7 pairs of glasses for everyone. How much does that cost?

Maybe the tv comes with so many glasses free, say 2 or maybe 3, that still leaves 4-5 people without glasses that he needs to buy for. That's more expense. What about people who come around for the night (which is quite the norm in my house)? He needs more glasses or someone will be left out.

Now this is a theoretical scenerio, but it's not uncommon. Cost is a factor, no matter how you may look at it.

SmokeyMcBear5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

@lolzer.. how much less.. a couple hundred. Thats one thing, buy saying its way too much is another. There are actually 46" tvs in that price, the range of price of tvs varies even within the same size.

if you have 7 people over.. and don't have enough glasses.. then don't watch the movie in 3D.. watch it regularly. Its not like everything is in 3D and nobody without glasses could ever watch the TV.. sheesh

lolzers5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

'you have 7 people over.. and don't have enough glasses.. then don't watch the movie in 3D.. watch it regularly. Its not like everything is in 3D and nobody without glasses could ever watch the TV.. sheesh '

That's a major flaw, not everyone will be able to experience it in your household. Don't watch in 3d? Is that your solution, get a 3dtv, but not everyone can watch it in your household? Can you not see the problem with that?

This is the exact reason that most people are waiting for 3dtv without glasses.

IdahoPkwy5742d ago

@lolzers

I'm sorry, but I fail to see your side of the argument. Again, you bring the finacial aspect in. Wanting a product of any sorts, is completely separate of being able to afford that product. They are seperate arguements to me.

As for the large families, it's your choice to have a large family or a multi-family living arrangement. Obviosly you would take your family into consideration, but that's still a finacial issue of affordability. Your combinding arguments, I think that's just the wrong way to look at it.

Look at the samung 3dtv at Best buy.
50" Plasma less than $1000
http://www.bestbuy.com/site...

SmokeyMcBear5742d ago

and its not even that big of sale price.. regular price is $1100...

milohighclub5741d ago

you have 7 people in a household, you get 2 pairs for free it will cos £200 for the extra glasses, if you have 7 in a household and are buying a 3dtv,then its obvious money isnt an issue, if it was you wouldn't be looking at a 3dtv knowing 7 ppl had to use it.

if you were inviting 7 ppl round to watch it then you'd have 7 pairs of glasses, if not invite less.

SeanRL5742d ago

When they go down in price and become more practical, sure.

BigKev455742d ago

Only when they come out with the 3DTVs that don't require glasses and the price is reasonable.

techie5742d ago

Are those really going to come out any time soon? And if they do won't they be really expensive and lower resolution?

rwarner1745742d ago

I am sure that glassless tv won't be around for a while. From what I understand the ones that exist now require the view to be with a certian distance and angle from the tv which won't be acceptable for most.

lolzers5742d ago

Depends what angle and what distance. I think glassless tv is the holy grail at the moment and whoever gets it right first is the goal at the moment. The glasses are one of the biggest turn offs for most people, no matter what some people may think on here. When 3dtvs come out without glasses, then it will be something that will really become mainstream.

ActionBastard5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.
