RPG Site - Catherine First Impressions

The team behind Persona 4 has a sexy game up their sleeves. I take a look at the information currently on hand about the title, and offer all the media currently available including the first screenshots and the debut trailer. Famitsu brought the announcement, and I compile it for you with my thoughts.

More and more this is looking like a JP version of HR. One that's both less involved and more involving. A true interactive movie sans brushing teeth or calling out "Jason!"

...Except it's not a movie.
It's supposed to have game bits on the "nightmares".

This thing kinda made me laugh.

From the article
"For what I have seen so far, the game looks really incredible. I put a lot of trust in a team who understands that a lot of gamers who were a part of the RPG scene during the Playstation 2 days have grown up and are starting to expect more mature games. In a way, it is a smart move which certainly has the ability to appeal to both Eastern and Western gamers. We want games that are a little more scary, a little more bloody, and a little more story-driven with our games nowadays, and Catherine looks to be hitting all those important aspects with flair."

The guy sounds like he has never played a Atlus game before. Atlus games(ones made by Atlus not just published) Have always been really mature in their storytelling and themes tackled. They never made games for teens or anything like that. This isn't them growing up with their audience and making a more mature game. This is them using the current gen tech to help facilitate the games they have always made. Thus helping it even at face value alone look more mature.

Maybe I should have put, more mature games like they have been doing since the beginning? I believe the Persona team has always been far ahead of their time, and only since Persona 3 have people really started to respect that. People have started to grow into that creative style since the Shin Megami Tensei games before, in my opinion, didn't get that respect that they deserved, and usually wounded up being sleeper hits at best. Persona 3 broke out and became a big success for the development team.

I apologize if my words were a little misleading, but I have been playing their games since the Playstation days and loved what they have created over the years. More and more people are starting to shift toward their target psychographic, and I only hope more developers begin to understand that. You don't need big, burly meatheads with millions of guns to push an adult-oriented storyline. I feel this team is far more sophisticated than that.

What I was saying was, not that the development team has grown into their audience, but their audience has grown into their design! You won't find these former Playstation 2 gamers looking towards cutesy characters as much as before, but people that kind of reflect their own individuality and age. Sure, you can still craft a game around people that are still in high school or college (or in this case, just out of college), but as long as the elements surrounding that product isn't chocked full of immature, kiddy story telling and graphics, they definitely have a pretty big fan-following that will pay very close attention to their titles, with Catherine being a part of that very same mold that the Persona series constructed!

Ill most likely be purchasing this. Looks interesting...BUT I am wondering what the actual gameplay mechanics are like.

Reibooi5751d ago

That's one of the things I'm most interested about. They said if I remember correctly that it was a action/adventure game. I'm wondering if they are just trying to create a new type of game or if they are perhaps testing the waters for Persona 5's combat(i.e making Persona 5 a action/adventure)

It's kinda hard to tell until we play it but the game looks good regardless.

Game-Sensai5750d ago

Nah they wouldn't make P5 into anything else than an RPG...

Reibooi5750d ago

Persona 5 could still easily be a RPG even if it has a more action based combat system.

For example Devil Summoner has a very action orietned combat system but no one would debate that it has RPG elements in it.

They could just as easily do the same thing for Persona. After all it's not the combat that makes everyone love that series so much. It's the characters, world, story and social aspects that do it.

This game sounds so interesting. It's nice to see one of my favorite developers trying different things. Hope this gets localized without any changes.
