Catherine Official Site Opens, New Artwork

Last week, Atlus surprised many gamers with their new title, Catherine. The first trailer showed a lot of erotic game elements, implied strong sexual content, and the premise seemed like a typical Atlus game: weird. The official site for the title has opened and it doesn't feature much new information, but it does have some new artwork.

Hopefully the game comes here uncensored.

Heavy Rain didn't even come close to what is probably going to be in Catherine. There was a few topless scenes and a clothed Sex scene in Heavy Rain.

In Cathrine there is thought to be MUCH more nudity(which may be full body) and there are sex scenes that in the trailers alone almost show enough to label it as porn. That being the case it doesn't look good for a uncensored release in the US and that's if it gets a release at all.

I'm hoping we get one because the game looks awesome. I would love to see what they were able to pull off graphically and I want to see how the game plays seeing how it's not a RPG and seeing as it's Atlus it's sure to have a incredible mind altering story.

Pardon me for saying so but that is an absurd sentence. You firmly state something in the first half, only to retract it instantly by writing "probably." Truth is, details are scant and none of us at this present time know just how adult-orientated Catherine is going to be. For all we know, it could be more tame than Heavy Rain. Nothing in the trailer struck me as particularly shocking.

In my comment above I wasn't saying anything concrete, but merely alluding to the fact that the media's perception towards video gaming is chilling out a bit. I think you're under-exaggerating some of the risks that Quantic Dream took in Heavy Rain. Prior to release, there was much murmuring that the game would be censored in America. Regarding the in-game content, there aren't just "a few topless" scenes but, *shock*, actual full-frontal nudity in both the shower scene and the interrogation scene with Paco (which may I add contained heavy undertones of rape). And the sex scene is only as clothed as the player wants it to be.

If you don't see anything shocking in the trailer then you need to look closer(or you are not easily shocked which is fine but you need to take into account the average person here). There is a scene in which it seems to be showing Catherine mounting the main character topless. That would imply a full blown sex scene. One in a much more revealing position then the one in Heavy Rain clothed or not.

And sorry WE DO know that the game is NOT going to be tame. Atlus has already stated(numerous times may i add) it's a game for Adults and will have plenty of Erotic content. Based on the trailer you could expect full blown sex scenes(that are far more graphic then anything we may have seen in the past) tons of nudity and perhaps even deeper meanings like rape that you mention Heavy rain had(this is Atlus after all they never shy away from these types of topics)

And while I 100% agree with you that the media perception towards gaming is changing and therefor allowing more adult games to be released you have to keep in mind Catherine's style. It's basically animated. The US as a whole still has issues with Animation for adults if it isn't something like the Simpsons or Family Guy(which this obviously isn't) I would not be surprised if because of this art style alone the ESRB decided to give the game a Adults only rating thereby dooming the games releasing in the US.

Again, you can't make a convincing argument that the game will be banned/censored by only second guessing how strong its content will be. What is implied does not equal what the gamer will see or what the actual in-game content will entail.

No, the trailer didn't shock me. I saw a brief shots of a sex scene, but then Mass Effect had sex scenes aswell. Sex scenes worthy of a PG-13 film. To name-drop another recent example, Red Dead Redemption had a full-blown sex scene: no ban-hammer needed. Essentially, it all depends on how far Atlus will take it and thus far we don't know. We may see nothing more than some suggestive shots. Yes, based on a trailer and some screenshots, you can "expect" the game will be adult-orientated. But HOW adult-orientated? We don't know. The game may have "deeper meanings like rape", but then it might not. Until we find out officially, saying such things is redundant.

You must not read anything or know anything about Atlus.

When the game was first announced in Famitsu Atlus stated the game was to be very adult oriented to the point that they were worried about how it would be received. Now Japanese games don't really tend to hide or abstain from sexual material so if they are worried about the games Japanese release it's safe to say they may be pushing some limits. All Atlus games are adult and mature so for them to this time mention that it was a Adult game and be worried about it's reception means they are doing something that might be beyond what we have seen in games before. And again coupled with their mention of erotic elements you can easily guess where that worry is coming from.

And while you are right that there is no guarantee that there will be a deeper them of rape it's a good bet that either that or some similar themes will be in the game as EVERY Atlus game has similar themes.

At this point you are simply ignoring facts that are known about the game and don't seem to know much about Atlus games in general. It's easy knowing from their past games and what we have already seen that there is a good chance this game could be pushing some limits and it's a sad easy way out to be saying "Oh it's not out yet you can't be sure" When stuff we have seen and stuff we have been told are pointing in the direction on which I am talking about.

"You must not read anything or know anything about Atlus."

Quick. Tell me an Atlus-developed game that has a sex scene with displayed nudity in it.

This is my problem with most game companies. By firmly establishing that they're going to go UP TO but never actually display nudity, they put up a bigger and bigger wall that says, "We are not willing to cross this line, and if we do, there's something wrong."

Atlus is part of that. You've got students sexing each other in the Personas all the time, and aside from Mara, they don't show jack in terms of nudity. Oh, look, Rise's on the stripper pole! What's she going to show? Nothing!

I'd be willing to bet all kinds of internets that this game will be less blatant than Heavy Rain in terms of displayed nudity. You'll have a lot of teasing like that trailer showed, but you'll never see as little as a nipple.

Reibooi5753d ago (Edited 5753d ago )

@TheoreticalParticle

While there has never been a sex scene in a past Atlus game(although in nearly every game they were implied) There has been nudity in the Persona series and Atlus games in general for a VERY long time. Many of the Persona's are nude and some of the shadow bosses in Persona 3 are nude despite not being 100% human.

And yeah I can get what you mean regarding Rise but if you wanna know the reason behind why you probably don't see nudity in that scene(or with Persona characters in general) is because SHE IS UNDERAGE. That little tidbit is the reason you never see nudity with the characters in Persona despite the fact that some of the Persona's themselves are nude(look on the back on the games case it lists partial nudity)

Catherine won't have this issue as the character has already been confirmed to be in her 20's

TheoreticalParticle5753d ago

"And yeah I can get what you mean regarding Rise but if you wanna know the reason behind why you probably don't see nudity in that scene(or with Persona characters in general) is because SHE IS UNDERAGE."

A country where pre-pubescent girls being penetrated by tentacles is a relatively common occurrence in their pornographic media is going to have a company back down from showing nudity because she's "underage"? Riiiiiight. Especially since the age of consent in Japan is 16.

In the US "underage" nudity would be a big deal. In Japan it doesn't mean squat. There's high-school age nudity in a great deal of their pornography there, and the age of consent is different. The only thing that stopped Atlus from having Rise get naked was Atlus.

I know you really want there to be nudity in this game, but there's nothing in Atlus' history that indicates that there's going to be any. If it's not a demon/Persona, it's not going to even show a nipple. Bank on it.

Provoking game indeed...im guessing this will be a persona type of game with some spicy moments going around here and there but in the end will be a love story or something like an tipical echi anime series.
