The PlayStation 3's open platform status makes it "better for customers" than more closed-off platforms, Valve has told CVG.

Free online is better for customers too.

rroded5746d ago

Steam on ps3 might b hella cool

esp if they give us those free upgrades XD

Christopher5746d ago

It would be awesome if the steamcloud technology were applied to all games, but it's only going to work for Portal 2 and other Valve games, IMHO. So, it's great, for Valve games only though.

Would love to see Steam community features enabled by tying your Steam account to your PSN account. Being able to communicate with people on the PS3 and PC/Mac would be pretty nice as well as improved game tracking stats.

You do realise that the PS3 is the LAST of the current generation of platforms to be hacked.

AtatakaiSamurai5746d ago

i knew valve were playing games with people when they would say all those bad stuff about the ps3. they were just trying to met obligations to ms but now theyre singing ps3 praises. what you think they just only now knew waht the ps3 is about?

lol @ op, the 360 got hacked a month after launch but ofcourse lets ignore that and laugh at sony

ProjectVulcan5746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

Microsoft tighly controls all content on xbox live. They control all the servers (bar EA's) and they say what goes and what doesnt when it comes to publishers content.

Sony's model has less restrictions. This has allowed valve to port steamworks and run it on PSN, offering it to PS3 users. This also extends to publishers looking to create MMOs and charge subscriptions for them, you have to tangle with a bunch of red tape to get them on XBL because it means microsoft giving up control of the way the game is administrated. They really dont like that.

The positive side of having total control like xbox live means that you can integrate features better because specifications of online games have tight requirements. Certification in short, is tighter. This is why for example patches are tiny on XBL, cos microsoft said they have to be and they arent allowed otherwise.

The positive side of a more open platform is that publishers are more free to offer services (like steamworks) and open titles like MMOs. Also some small developers find it a lot easier to get their stuff directly in the PSN store. This is why steamworks is only coming to PS3 and why square are still fighting with microsoft over FF14, whereas it breezed onto PS3.

Rhythmattic5746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

vulcanproject

Actually reading your post made me realise... equals meaning the equivalent.

OSX= XBL

PSN = WIn...

Interesting.

BrutallyBlunt5746d ago

I don't think XBOX Live allowed custom stuff but it was on Sony's PSN.

Xbox live is better than psn, point blank. As for the open strategy, microsoft really needs to open up the service too many opportunities are passing them by.

Active Reload5746d ago

And thats the reason Valve better be doing something stupendous with the PS3 and its opened features and options. If not, then to me they'll be a laughing stock.

Army_of_Darkness5746d ago

I really don't see how live is better than psn to be perfectly honest?! As of now, they seem the same to me as in terms of online gameplay...
But if we're gonna add PSN plus, then live stands no chance.

Dramscus5746d ago

Agree with AoD. The only thing live has over psn is cross game chat which frankly who cares. I want to talk to the people playing the same game as me. Who wants to have a convo about something else while gaming it's distracting.

Also I've played on live psn has a better community imo. Better people. More adults, friendlier, not as much rage crying.

kneon5746d ago

PSN has most of the features available on Live, plus a few that aren't. The main difference is that many things are better integrated (easier to use) on Live. But as I don't care for any of those features it makes no difference to me. I just want to get online and play, and that works perfectly fine on PSN, and it costs me nothing.

ActionBastard5746d ago

XBL is not better than PSN. Paying to Tweet, FB, Netflix and MP game does not make it better. It's a forced service, if you didn't have to pay for MP, you wouldn't...point blank.

Double Toasted5746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

Nope....there are PLENTY...PLENTY of people who have both options and they STILL pay for LIVE.

Helghastkid....same features? Can you name all the features of both without leaving any out and then say they have the same features?

ActionBastard5746d ago

They pay for Live for MP gaming. That is the only real reason to pay for Live.

iFLOWLIKEWATER5746d ago

n other words, if they had to pay for PSN...they wouldn't, lulz =P

AtatakaiSamurai5746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

these people are universally called... morons :/

everybody knows if mp was free on live gold membership would drop by 99% cause no matter how much people want to pretend that it's the features of live they so desperately love want and need, they aren't fooling anyone with a brain.

they pay for online, thats it. the other stuff is bs. hell sometimes they even tell you part of the live feature is they have their friends on there wtf? so you can't find digital friends else where? youre so dependent on you click of friends you can't game without them? how sad and pathetic is that?

ZombieAutopsy5746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

Yea i don't know what double toasted is talking about, if i didnt have to pay for LIVE to play games online there is no way i would...hell i just recently let my live account run out because I don't even care about gaming online for it until i get reach.

Scrath that I'll renew my LIVE once DR2 comes out assuming my xbox playing friends get it on release day so i can play coop.

HelghastKid5746d ago

dude....i know you love MS but come on, even it was free with the same features you're telling me you would still pay for it? jeez you need help

yewles15746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

You know what they say...

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

XD

Ravage275746d ago

most people i know shifted their online gaming to the PS3 after having a taste of free online play....just saying :/

XBox Live has a better PARTY system than PSN.

That is it. Other than that, Live is a complete mess to navigate. They put all sorts of obnoxious marketing crap up in your face, and make you work to find anything worthwhile.

And yes, I have both.

Yue95746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

console wars its going to get old really who gives a damn?anyway i am a ps3 owner and even ill say xbox live's online is better im sorry you can disagree with me but im only stating facts if it wasn't for games like atelier rorona or NISA i would sell the ps3 and get a xbox 360 in a heartbeat but luckly the ps3 after 5 years got some nice Jrpgs i want but sorry folks xbox live does have better online play and i see one idiot diagreed keep them coming... =)

gamer20105746d ago

I have both and you are full of crap, period. Everything from bringing up the dash during a game to sending messages works a lot smoother on the 360.

frostypants5746d ago

Can you post your original statement? You know, BEFORE you ran it through Babelfish?

frostypants5746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

gamer, yes, that's inherently part of the party system. Reading is fun. But Live/PSN also include the rest of the experience: online games, movies, etc. Live sucks for that. It's a disorganized disaster.

Yes, party interactions are better. Much better. But the basic interface outside of the popup menu is crap.

And putting "period" after your statement doesn't make your comment any less subjective. Grow up.

Optical_Matrix5746d ago

Now I admit, the unified nature of the social aspect of Live eclipses that of PSN. But in terms of features, it's a different story. You're paying for everything that is on PSN for free. Cross Game Chat and Party Chat do not justify £30 imo. It seems to me like it's a case of "because we're paying for it, it must be better".

Pennywise5746d ago

Oh, Chuk... open your eyes.

You have obviously never have played on the PSN.

rroded5746d ago

with cross game chat n ingame music on every title but for gameing nothing beats free dedicated servers XD

outrageous5746d ago (Edited 5746d ago )

Valve is embracing the PS3 because M$ and Xbox are now a competitor. Xbox 360 gaming is now under the direct control of Steve Ballmer and he wants to rule the world and is responsible for pushing Bach out the door and taking over XBox gaming. Xbox wants to get into PC gaming again in a big way, tie it all into XBL there new Windows 7 phone and Valve/steam is a direct competitor. That's why the big boy is eating humble pie and begging PS3 to embrace him and his companies. It's always about the money for these guys. Gabe Newell is a former M$ employee...get the picture.

jmorph95746d ago

Valve's business model is to provide best value for their software. They commonly update their games for years after release. Team Fortress 2 is a great example. PC side has multiple updates over the years, xbox none. Why? Because MS wants to charge for it, like they did on L4D. It was free for PC, 560 points on xbox. They should be congratulated for moving to a platform open enough to allow their business model.

And for MS leveraging Windows dominance to destroy valve, never going to happen. Windows has been declared a monopoly by the DOJ. They dodged having MS broken up last time, they won't mess around any more.

raztad5746d ago

"Xbox live is better than psn, point blank" = "Bu bu teh xbl is more fluid and integrated, and we haz x-chatz/fazebuk". I give you that,

Looking forward to Steamworks-PSN. Open networks ftw. Cant wait to try it out and get Portal 2 free dlc automatically.

What a change of tune Valve had, it is like two different companies.

Rhythmattic5746d ago

Chuk5, there are another 4 before you... Point Blank.

writersblock5746d ago

Did you just say its better... point blank?
Wtf do you mean point blank? Point blank is close range firing, you're wording makes no sense. You just choose point blank because it sounds cool?

ilikecookies5746d ago

While i agree that free is always better to have it is not always technically better. I would pay 8 dollars a month 24 dollars every three moths or 50 dollars every 13 months for live anyday over free psn because finding a match on 360 takes 5 seconds and on ps3 even with dedicated servers takes minutes at a time. Leave the fanboyism out for a minute and think. Ps3 is he number onr source for exclusives and single player games hands down. But for multiplayer noone stays playing the game for too long. CoD exempted. On xbox live the attach rate is greater. I play ps3 multiplayer games and get bored very fast. I played uncharted 2 online maybe 6 times.

raztad5746d ago

cool story bro, but it is no related to PSN being open and the best strategy for costumers, in the opinion of Valve.

"I play ps3 multiplayer games and get bored very fast. I played uncharted 2 online maybe 6 times"

Oh really? I played MW twice I'm got bored. It means sh!t.

strickers5746d ago

That's a very simplistic view. There are things that are better on PSN.Example.Most exclusive games are 32 or more players.

Steam Deck Launch Delayed

According to Valve: “The launch of Steam Deck will be delayed by two months. We’re sorry about this—we did our best to work around the global supply chain issues, but due to material shortages, components aren’t reaching our manufacturing facilities in time for us to meet our initial launch dates. Based on our updated build estimates, Steam Deck will start shipping to customers February 2022.”

Sgt_Slaughter1648d ago

Totally understandable given the current climate, but also a big blow for hype for sure. I would not be surprised if there was a further delay down the road, given how unpredictable assembly lines are at the moment.

0rbital711648d ago

suits me cos i cant afford mine till after xmas haha

Teflon021648d ago

Literally what I just said out loud lmao. Mine was Q1 it said already. But this just makes it perfect for me if the earliest is Feb, mine will probably be April or later which is outside all the releases I care about

VenomUK1648d ago

It's understandable as all manufacturers are supply constrained of components. It just means that 2022 is going to be SO stacked!

roadkillers1648d ago

Why do people always say "current climate"? What are the origins of this highly corporate statement?

ActualWhiteMan1648d ago

Current Climate is 45 degrees Fahrenheit where I am HBU? 🤣

Sgt_Slaughter1648d ago

Just felt like using it, works for the context of the situation

blacktiger1648d ago

ikr, people are brainwashed

blacktiger1648d ago

oh lord this guy believes in climate bs

AmUnRa1648d ago

And some people dont want to see the truth and are brainwashed and think there is nothing wrong with the climate and dont want to see al the signs that indicate that there is defenitly a change in the climate worldwide.

blacktiger1648d ago (Edited 1648d ago )

by listening to others is not truth, seeing for yourself is truth. But people are used to so called television and media oh yeah and government but not with their own eyes ever! That's a hard fact. Ice melt, and you all believe it. Volcanoe hit and you all believe it, this has happened even in the Bible so what climate change for 10, 000 years?

Fishy Fingers1648d ago

Year on and we still cant easily buy consoles or GPUs. No surpised.

Orchard1648d ago

That's a bummer, but only 2 months, and understandable given how unpredictable HW is right now.

phoenixwing1648d ago

Disappointing but not really surprised. I'll still be waiting and keep my pre order

Eonjay1648d ago

Feburary seems to be the month everything is releasing now.

Si-Fly1648d ago

Until the next round of delays 🤣

I would buy a machine that is set up to how Kirito and Asuna play games in Sword Art Online

Inverno1937d ago

The world of Sword Art is something I don't think any developer right now will ever bother attempting to create. I've seen .Hack too and the games both those anime show is something I wish someone would make. A real life simulation presented in a medieval fantasy-esque aesthetic would make me quit real life in a heart beat lol

Double_O_Revan1937d ago

Software might be really buggy though...

Profchaos1937d ago

Maybe and maybe the flying car bug was really just a prediction of flying car software failure.

ScootaKuH1937d ago

If reality moves at 3 frames per second that is 😉

Kabaneri1937d ago

That sounds cool but imagine the social consequences some people would get really attached to that alternate reality.

Lore1937d ago

Dwight in Second Life comes to mind

Automate farming systems abd have computers feed us through tubes and live theblife you want.... lol wait what if the Matrix Is real? :?o :p

AFKghost1937d ago

I really dont give a flying monkey doodoo about all this futurism bs. Its really just sad, old timers on their way out desperately trying to stay relevant when they should have been making good games for the last 20 years.
