By down-sampling with Maximalgrafik: The PC version of Mafia 2 has a few exceptions, a featured graphic. But only by using downsampling the game shines in its true splendor.

Like most multiplats, Mafia 2 looks best on PC.

What is the cost of PC hardware to get better graphics quality than X360 or PS3? And how often does the PC hardware need to be upgraded to ensure it's always above X360 and PS3 graphics?

Those are the questions PC gamers don't like to talk about.

Fishy Fingers5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

Ha, no, these are the excuses console gamers still try and use.

Cost, not a great deal more than either of my launch consoles, bare in mind, a PC does and is far more useful than a console. Upgrading, that old egg, you can upgrade as often as you want really, but unless you want absolute bleeding edge performance, a mid range, few year old GPU will handle pretty much everything today and decent resolution, AA etc

comp_ali5742d ago

everything got its price plus if you consider the freedom of the PC platform (mods, dedicted servers,kb and mouse or any method of control you wish, can be pluged into tvs obviously just like consoles. and above all it is not just for gaming , it is computer which can do everything for real this time.

OpenGL5742d ago

My $800 laptop plays Mafia 2 better than the 360 and PS3, so it would probably cost $500 or less to build a desktop capable of doing the same thing.

Zinc5742d ago

What are you talking about? I don't mind talking about them at all. I have a computer that I put together for about 700 dollars (including OS). I later got an upgraded monitor 24inch that cost about 300 more. So, for my rig it ended up costing me $1000.

I put that thing together back in mid 2007 and it is still going strong. Not only that, but the parts I used were not high dollar items at the time and I'm still able to play most everything that comes out on the highest settings. Now, even if I couldn't run them at highest and had to run most games at mid-level setting, it would still be a better looking experience than what you can get on any console out there.

That's not just simply my random opinion, it's solid provable fact.

I will probably upgrade by next Christmas (not this) at the earliest, but might not until even later. It's amazing what a smartly laid out purchase can get you.

Thecraft19895742d ago

Yes would love talk about that my pc cost me £520 6 core amd gtx460 8gb ram coolermaster sniper It cost me £115 for than ps3 and will last very long time only have upgraded is a free a processor and cheap gx460 because a computer shop near was shutting down now extra spent on the pc are save with cheaper games due me not paying royalties to m$ or sony.

TheIneffableBob5742d ago

$600 and you have a desktop that can play Mafia 2 at much higher graphics quality than the 360/PS3.
http://www.bit-tech.net/har...

So I'd say like $400 to have a machine that would run on par. Plus you can use your computer as a computer!

Vortex3D5742d ago

Funny is everyone that replied kept saying their PC costs more than either PS3 or X360 which what I said originally. What can a $300 PC compare and what can it still compare in 3 years from now?

I used to be a complete PC gamer until I finally got so tired having to keep putting more money to upgrade the hardware just play the games comparable to the consoles. Second is I got tired have to frequently update the drivers and then having to ensure the new drivers/Windows remain compatible with the old games. After I moved my gaming to game consoles, I can play games released on the first day or games made several years later. The games just work. Can't say that with the same PC hardware even I start with a high end PC hardware and several years later, there's no guarantee that many games will still run properly on the same hardware.

The point is when newer games come out, do the game developers really ensure the game is fully optimized to get the most out of the older PC hardware? They expect PC gamers to upgrade the hardware. That is why the minimal hardware requirement on PC games is always a joke. It is true that game console hardware is fixed until the next gen comes out, but the good side is it forces game developers to maximize the use of the same console hardware to get the most out of it.

Can a $300 Xbox 360 or PS3 rip DVDs? Browse the internet (properly)? Handle word processing? Photoshop? Video editing?

Cock4Gamers5742d ago

Yes you can. Considering that most everyone already has a pc, the cost of the pc(in the case of a person on an extreme budget) is moot because 3/4 of the product is already owned. Now, all one has to do is buy a graphics card like a $130-140 ATI 5750 and plop it into the pci x16 slot on their pc and BOOM! You max out most games IQ settings very easily at 1440x900(720p but slightly better).

Zinc5742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

Both OpenGL and Cock4Gamers are correct.

Not only that, but think about it... people who bought the PS3 within a year of launch had to pay like $600.00

That's only $100.00 less than I spent for my PC and I bought the parts like within 6 months of the PS3 launch here in the US. Since then I've been getting maximum use out of my PC, simply because it is a PC. I spend AT LEAST $10.00 less for every game I buy which mean in a hypothetical situation, if you buy a game a month I saved on average $120.00 a year over the console crowd. So, really I'm ahead of the average console purchaser by now.

And even when PC gamers buy games on sale, the sale prices are usually better than console sales prices too.

Don't get me wrong, I think there are some quality games that are console exclusives, but it's a no contest victory here.

I will give a point to the PS3, in that it has built in BR support, so that was, at the time, very attractive.

It seems like we get a lot of poorly translated mishmash. The game looks okay. I'm cautiously optimistic. It, like all multiplatforms are always going to look the best on the PC and probably play the best, as well for various reasons.

Otheros005742d ago (Edited 5742d ago )

Play the best IF you also have a controller that works on pc. Certain games suck with keyboard and mouse.
Example: Last Ramnent

Bioshock still looks fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Yui_Suzumiya1202d ago

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled1202d ago (Edited 1202d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney1202d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled1202d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist1201d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin1202d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled1202d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE1202d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi1202d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE1202d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.
