Resolution: Difficulties with Difficulty

Resolution's Mike Hirst writes: Dear readers, it has come to my attention that I need to get something off my chest, something which will make me seem like less of a man. You see I have a secret. I am a coward, a wuss, why? Because I play games on Easy.

Throughout my gaming life I’ve always wanted to keep pace with my friends, those with somewhat superhuman abilities for completing games on Normal or Hard – or so they say. I didn’t want to miss out on discussions at school regarding a certain narrative point in Final Fantasy 8, or Resident Evil, Starcraft and even Half-Life.

I agree!
But the hard truth is that games are no longer made for people like me. Im from the age of no savegames and starting over everytime I turned the console on.

In todays age, no one is willing to start a game from the beginning. They finish the story and move on to the next game. If they lost a savegame they wont start over. They will just google a cheat code or youtube in case of a strugling puzzle. Games are no longer for people like me.

Edit (Side note):
The worst case of these types of games is CoD online. The reason everyone loves this game is because anyone can be good at it. You kill someone and points come pouring down the screed giving you a sense of accomplishment. Thats why people are going back to it because no other game rewards you so much like CoD online. I kill someone? 100 points! With a headshot? 50 more points on top of those 100! Oh, the first blood kill? Add another 50 to those 150! By the way, its your tenth kill with this weapon, here, take some 1000 points to go with those 200. - You get my drift?!

I agree, but disagree.

"In todays age, no one is willing to start a game from the beginning. They finish the story and move on to the next game. If they lost a savegame they wont start over."

That describes me for some games (without the cheating part). When playing a game that takes a ton of grinding, or after hours and hours of playing, starting over would just be WAAAY to much time and effort. I played and beat Final Fantasy 13 the otehr day. I enjoyed the game, but there is no way i am going to play through the whole thing again. Thats a ton of time just to replay a game that you already beat.

For games with less "grinding", I am way more willing to play multiple times.

that is why I'm on the story telling type of thing, look at games like mgs4, kz2, and some parts of uncharted2. in all the mgs(1-4) what makes it difficult was the fact that the game itself is deep, and if you skipped any cutscens you may be wondering where to go unless you've wondered in the right spots.

kz2, what makes that game difficult was not only the controls(which I love) it was the fact that it wasn't like any other shooter, the word realism is all I can think of, and in a real war, who runs and guns?

and for uncharted2 the only reason why the game was a little eas was because, I seen someone else played the game.(the reviwer) like the first part of the game(the train), if I didn't see that part, I would have been stuck for a good hour or so.

Most games today are far too easy, which wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't that they are far too easy even on their most difficult setting.

Finishing a game on Veteran, Elite, Super Human, Insane, God, Legendary etc. modes used to mean something. Now anyone can do it.

getting all the achievements/trophies in the same time it takes a nuub to beat the game on hard. If games are easy you should be 100% them.

to get your value from the game that you spent your cash on and to show people how easy the game is. Theres always punk people who are like "the game is easy", omfg these achievements and trophies are to difficult. they are apart of the game and not getting 100% mean the game is to hard for you to complete it.

Ill sit and wait for the bs people to comment of how rediculous hard/ time consuming trophies/ achievements are. If the game is easy then they not difficult or time consuming because i bet I can 100% most game before the people who say the game is easy even beat the game on hard difficulty.

GrieverSoul5769d ago

I think you didnt explained your point very well but I understand what you are saying. But some games trophies dont represent its dificulty. Some are just boring and time consuming like gathering all the items or text logs.

Some games trophies actually show how far you went in dificulty modes to beat it, others dont. Those are the one people cry about being to easy. Sad people that stay on Demons Souls at 0%. :)

lynch5769d ago

to appreciate the story but i will always finish it on the hardest difficulty to fully beat the game.

NarcolepZZZZZZ5769d ago

It's almost like this guy has a subscription to game informer magazine....I swear I just read the same article on the toilet...anyway...I play on easy or normal too so....I agreez.

OSU_Gamer5769d ago

I always try to play on hard. I feel like I am getting more out of the game. The more times I take to beat a level, the beter I will become.

Plus with the lack of length of some games, playing on hard lets me ghet the most out of them.
