Brilliant story. Unfortunately it goes downhill from the first one. Halo 3's campaign was pretty good though. Hopefully Reach pulls it back kicking and screaming.

I've always thought of the Halo series as:

Halo - The Matrix
Halo 2 - The Matrix Reloaded
Halo 3 - Revolutions
ODST - The AniMatrix

Wars was like that anime released.

Reach will hopefully bring it back to the awesomeness of the first game...and then some. Playing "The Fall of Reach"?! That should undoubtedly be Bungie's best work to date.

halo/matrix - start of story
halo2/reloaded - ends in cliff hanger
halo3/revolutions - finishes off the story

but odst =/= animatrix...halo legends/animatrix - series of short movies mixed in the lore

odst and reach dont have a match from the matrix movies/story

You shouldn't be afraid to like Halo. The logic is almost like if you don't have an xbox you must hate Halo. I personally think the series is overrated but that doesn't mean it's not great. I'm just gutted they stopped releasing them on PC, but rejoice, next term my flat mate will have a 360. Looking forward to trying Halo Reach.

i somewhat agree but regarding halo as an overrated series is interested because personaly i don't think its overrated by the media because for the most part it deserves the praise it gets, It is however seriously overrated by the fans but regardless its still a series that at the very least should be tried out by any gamer.

I can see people's opinoins of it being overrated...personally the fact I can still play Halo 3 today 3 years after release and it be fun is a testament of how good the game is (to me).

Hopefully Bungie can impress the haters with their multiplat game (even though I kinda hope it's not a shooter)

having seen the latest footage of Halo being played, i still do not understand why it gets such hype. it's just a typical and rather old fashioned looking FPS... what the hell is the draw? lack of alternatives? gameplay? rapid fanboyism? what is it?

Why don't you play it and find out? Obviously all the fans of Halo explaining it hasn't taken hold.

So why don't you not rely on the word of others and actually try the game?

From my perspective, Halo is one of the best balanced and fun gameplay in an FPS. There's actual teamwork (you'll get rolled if you don't if the other team works as a team). If you don't like it, you don't but rapid (assuming rabid is what you mean) fanboyism isn't why Halo is still played by a 100000 people at any given time on Xbox Live 3 years after release.....just saying

It is just a basic FPS, but it does that so well. Its great fun to play. I loved Halo CE and Halo 2 was fun. I dont have a 360 so I havent tried Halo 3 but I do want to.

There is a lot of variety in which you can play the game. There are so many different gameplay mechanics and variance in weaponry that I fail to see how it is "basic." To me, a basic shooter would be an indie game or something that doesn't have much choice or features.

Don't know what you mean by that, but I agree it is great fun to play. Every game in the series is fun its own right. My personal favorite is Halo 3, because of the crazy ass levels me and my buddies have made in Forge. Now we are getting a huge revamp of forge mode as well as a really huge map known as forge world. Great times ahead. I love to tinker with stuff, and I can't wait to see what the community comes up with next.

I think you could make an argument that it's a basic FPS without implying that it is lacking in features, a good design, or sophistication.

Halo(the shooter series) generally is a pure shooter with no rpg elements, character advancement, adventure elements, dialog trees, branching stories, or integral strategy elements (in the sense of a squad-tactics game like Rainbow Six).

It DOES complicate things a bit by having third person vehicles, but other than that, it's very focused on being a straight FPS game rather than a hybrid of multiple game types like Bioshock, Borderlands, Oblivion, or Fallout are.

That's not to say that Halo is simplistic or bare bones.

Bungie neevr strayed far from the Halo formula while at the same time each game was unique and had noticable gameplay diffirences from the previous. The Halog ames have always been fun and balanced and Bungie is great at supporting their community!

Halo has also never reduced itself to becoming a Call of Duty or Counterstrike clone like other FPS games this gen. Let alone Halo 1 set the standards for the past 9 years of FPS games.

Halo is great because it blends awesome run n gun shooting with great ground and air vehicular gameplay and has some truly unique weapons. For someone to say Halo is typical is rather ignorant. Bungie has done a tremendous job creating unique weapons that do different things against different enemies, etc.

The gameplay is extremely balanced, and to top it off, Bungie hasn't allowed Halo 3 to be exploited to death.

I had never played a Halo game until Halo 3 released, and I didn't see what the big deal was to be honest. The more you play it though, the more you see how much Bungie put into the game. If you just watch a couple multiplayer matches, you might not get it. It's when you play, do something so crazy and amazing and wonder exactly what happened that you go into Theater and rewatch it. You then realize you got that second half of the double kill because your grenade blast launched an orange cone into an enemy with their shields down and killed them, that's when it hits you how awesome the game's physics engine is and how detail oriented Bungie really is.

There are some really crazy moments I have recorded that I just cannot get over happened. I have a clip where I stuck a guy riding on the back of a mongoose with a rocket launcher with a sticky grenade, then shot at the base of the mongoose, the pair went flying up a cliffside and slammed into a person that had used a mancannon, the sticky grenade blew up and killed all three of them. That was on Valhalla.

Being able to go into theater mode and record that to show all your friends is truly awesome.

How about playing rocket baseball? One person has a rocket launcher and shoots at someone with a gravity hammer. The person with the gravity hammer hits the rocket with the shockwave of the hammer and sends the rocket flying back towards the sender or in crazy random directions. There is so much more to do and see than just killing things.

I think these are the reasons why the game is still played by hundreds of thousands of people a day. You can have fun even if you suck at FPS's.

Exactly dude. You can do so much stuff in Halo 3 because of Forge and Theater. I've spent so many hours just messing around in Forge with friends.

With Forge 2.0, it really feels like the game will have limitless replay value, which is good since it is the last Bungie Halo game.

In other games, you can do something amazing, but you aren't quite sure if you REALLY did it or you're puzzled about what exactly happened. Because of Theater, you can relive those moments forever and share them with anyone and everyone.

I've played halo, but it became dull after halo 2. I must admit playing multiplayer in halo and halo 2 were some of the best moments i had playing a shooter(especially when the whole class played 8-). However, i'm not a halo fanboy, i own a ps3 now, shooters aren't my fav. any more

I got my first Xbox for Halo and Fable and unfortunately... Brute Force :/ I dont regret it. Halo 2 was amazing for its time as well. Halo 3 unfortunately was kind of a let down. It seemed like a quick cash in after Gears took over. I am one in the minority that like ODST simply because it was Bungie experimenting and trying something new. That is what they are good at. I even liked Halo Wars (even though I suck at it) I have yet to read the Halo Reach novel but I am looking forward to it. I think it is a great series that might be a bit over rated.

I had the original xbox, not a playstation 2. Regardless, Halo was not in my collection, which seems odd. It just never appealed to me

PS3 and 360 came out, I didnt buy a new console. With a cousin coming over I bought a few games (including halo 2) so I finally got around to playing it

It was alright.. I guess. I had lots of fun playing it (singleplayer and multiplayer). It was a very fun game, but even while playing I didnt get what all the fuss was about. Splinter Cell CT, KOTOR, Rainbow 6... those games deserved praise. Halo was only alright

Halo 3. I'm just over half way through it and I would say... it's OK. Good, but not great.

I've always felt that I had to at least complete one of the Halo games to really consider myself a gamer, and not having an original Xbox the first two were never touched.

It has tight, responsive gameplay yes... but it has an over the top arcade like feel to it to me. For the most part, it takes at least a full clip of ammo, maybe more, to dispose of nearly all enemies. (with the exception of sniper rifles). I'm finding this to be quite annoying actually.

Halo I think was just at the right place at the right time. FPS weren't big on consoles and it did a good enough job that it helped define the Xbox brand. I can understand how it has it's following, but at the same time I don't really feel like I've missed out on much.

I can respect that....I tend to like the lots of bullet kills....it's more a game of who can outmaneuver the other while being shot as opposed to games like COD (though fun) where it's generally who sees who first. In halo, I have a shot (and often succeed) in killing the guy who tailed me shooting at me.

Halo is it's own style of FPS and not everyone is gonna like everything but I can respect your ability to talk about it's faults without calling it the worst game ever.

Halo is certainly successful because of it's user base that Bungie has built up. Bungie is one of those developers I trust to put out good games regardless (along with Valve, Bioware and Blizzard)

Yeah, it definitely has it's own style. Some of the things that I do really like is the physics, the enemy AI and the amount of color. It's a nice retraction from the more somber FPS color palette and the game is challenging.

Maybe it will grow on me as time goes on with it. I have played nearly 6 straight hours of it today.

Grunts, Jackals, and the flying insects are all one shot headshots. The bigger foes aka brutes, are a little bit harder, but soften em up with a nade, then blast em in the face. Glad you are enjoying it and talking about what you don't like about it like a gamer unlike some of the people here.

I still haven't gotten around to playing some really great games, but I would never trash them like a lot of people do Halo, for not having played them. I have yet to get around to MGS3, Ico, Chronicles of Riddick, Kingdom Hearts, and many more but I would never dislike or hate them because I haven't tried them yet.

All games at least deserve a try. I used to judge games before trying them, but I have to say some of the games I enjoyed the most are the ones I hated on before trying them. Funny how stuff works like that.

Try using the correct weapons, correctly, at the correct range, against the correct targets. The assault rifle isn't a buzz saw(like Quake 4's is) and the shotgun isn't a cone of death(like most Doom games). Try for head shots. Use one weapon(usually a plasma pistol) to bring down a shield and another to do heavy body damage rapidly because energy weapons are better against shielded opponents. Feather your assault rifle fire for better effect(it cuts down on the recoil pull). Also consider melee while charging, using grenades, and snatching vehicles.

As for "arcadey" just about every shooter but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Flashpoint are "arcadey". Ever wonder about how far you can get with just using a knife in a lot of military shooters? They make them that way because most people have more fun that way.

I didn't play fps shooters or any shooters till Halo. That game got me into shooters and now i'm a massive fan of the series and not one game experience has been less than stellar in my opinion.

i played Halo and Halo 2 when i had xbox and xbox 360
i left the game and console and joined the PS3 fun.

3 years later, i returned to Halo by playing Halo 3 with my work colleagues. (got xbox 360 and Halo 3 at work) shot them many times. Still experienced in playing Halo.

do i like Halo? nope

Why? Killzone and Killzone 2 has fans like Halo or any other game does. Why does one game being great make another game not great? It's possible to have two great games that are great for two different reasons. They don't have to be thrown into a pit to fight for gamer's love. People who sincerely like sci-fi shooters SHOULD be able to find a lot to like about both series.

The game can be pure crap for all anyone cares and it will continue to sell just from the hype and thats why people buy it. They are all like we got to buy this game because everyone will be playing it. I think its pretty safe to say that there are way better and interesting fps out there. halo looks bland and last gen in comparison to these other games.

Its basically the justin bieber/ twilight thing with halo. You got a lot of people blinded by it even though the quality is not good. They will always come back to say but theres so many people that agrees with me and likes twilight, halo, justin biber, etc and it has a bunch of modes which are basic fps junk and menu systems type stuff. Its nothing amazing but they make it out to be like the second comeing. Its an fps and no matter what matchmaking it has which is basically the same from many other games, no matter what create a fake cheap map by moving objects around that has been done before in tons of games, no matter how many people play the game it will always be your standard bland fps.

They replaced studio leadership
They changed the studio name
They announced the change to UE5
... all while supporting Infinite

The support to Infinite isn't what it originally should have been but they've still been providing tons of official updates over the years, and as recently as two months ago added a brand new weapon.

Infinite did feel like Halo, that's not what the complaints were...

The complaints were almost literally everything else. Monetization, netcode and desync, the campaign structure, story, and single biome, the weaker-than-expected post-launch content.

Dev times in modern days 4 years of silence isn't unheard of when things are running smoothly.

And around 6 months ago 343 did show a tech demo of ue5 using halo assets so it's not radio silence.

Given all the shake ups i am more surprised we're getting anything next year at all.

Probably the simplest to work around with. They are reportedly doing it in UE5, so its just as much an Anniversary thing, as its probably the studio getting familiar and setting up their tools and processes in the engine with an actual game, to facilitate the development of the next Halo

I'm guessing combat evolved has a smaller scope in general the later half of the game features a ton of backtracking and reused assets making it a easier game to remake on a deadline

Its also a better choice if this is the first game to be multiplatform mind you I think it's pretty much a given that anyone with a passing curiosity has played this by now in some way be it pc or brought a used console for a few bucks

I would love to see Lost Odyssey come over to PS5. I would definitely buy that again. That was the first game that I played on my 360. Loved the story and battle system. One of the best JRPGs of all time in my opinion.
