Wasting Time in Open-World Games

Community member Ben Ingber writes: I have wasted a lot of time gaming. That's not to say gaming is a waste of time. Quite the opposite. But sometimes I find myself on autopilot, spending hours pressing buttons and twiddling analog sticks, barely aware of what I'm doing, achieving nothing of value whatsoever. Do this happen to you, too?

JamesDeRosa5764d ago

I try not to waste time playing games. That's why I either only play the main quest, or I grab a strategy guide and make sure to get everything on the first run through.

mastiffchild5764d ago

I'm not strict about it, no, I just find arsing about with no aim in ANY game boring. If someone else is just driving abvout knocking down pedestrians in GTA it has ALWAYS bored the life out of me and doing it myself would be, possibly, even more dull as I'd know I could be controlling niko to actually get on with something.

To me the big thing about sandbox games isn't the larking about aimlessly outside of missions but rather the way you can use, or the devs use, the working, interactive world while you do the important stuff and side quests. If there was more stuff like studying an assassination targets routine in a new Hitman game as he moved through a living city with other NPCs doing their daily I'd be right into that as it has a point to me but tying planes to boats and jumping into the ground from a mile up for lulz in JC2? Boring to me. In fact it really winds me up thinking about it!

GTA makes some use of it's city and if there were more meaningful side quests I'd find more reason to stay in the world as just messing is just not for me and while there are actual gaming things to be done elsewhere I doubt this kind of thing will ever appeal much to me.

wait a minute youre imagination is lacking if you cant take an open world game and have fun

UnSelf5764d ago

yes of course

the devs create these vasts worlds for us to explore and get lost in. now whether or not if you can contribute that time spent to another hobby is another story

I didn't like just cause 2(on my ps3), it felt like it wasn't really done. It needed multiplayer and never really knew if it wanted to be. All the amazing mods made the pc version a whole new game. Usually I don't find much of a difference between pc and console games but this one was just bad.

ITLoo5764d ago

Just Cause 2 is my default time waster.

I hate all the travel and looking for items feels like dead game time .

More like people don't play these type of games on their phone normally and don't try them out. Not like the places where people do play these games haven't crushed those numbers easily.

How many people actually played more than an hour of the game or came close to finishing it on mobile is the real question. If people aren't playing the games to a point that is purposeful, then why try when a subscription that is behind a streaming service isn't a sign of success but just curiosity.

What if Netflix becomes ‘the Netflix of gaming?!’

Alek83130d ago

I downloaded it because I already have a Netflix sub.
I am not going to buy it for $40 or whatever it costs on Google Play.

I tried it out and will be sticking to the PC version, but it's not bad.

Having said that, this is the issues I see vs the PC version:
1. Greatly reduced texture resolution.
2. Massive downgrade ALL lighting quality (this includes water, shadows, etc).
3. Stutter and heat. Prolonged play leads to both.
On the plus side, we have:
4. This thing is like 6GB vs the 12 on Steam.

Great way to try the game, but not the best way to play it.

Perhaps Netflix will make a RDR series now that ST is done with.

Lionsguard131d ago

A Netflix version of RDR?... Oh boy... I can't wait... /s

TheColbertinator131d ago

They should build a production that includes members behind the True Grit remake and Hell on Wheels from AMC. Both were perfect for wild west vibes.

but i doubt people ACTUALLY played it on smartphone vs tried it out.

Another free update...good to know but I don't own a series X

Petebloodyonion164d ago

I’m not sure what the exact issue is. I had no trouble getting the free update—you basically get the new game for free if you have the 360 version in your digital library. Maybe the problem is related to owning or not owning the Undead DLC expansion.

Hypertension140164d ago (Edited 164d ago )

Yea I think thats what it is. I also own the game but not the expansion, and im unable to download the update.
