Kombo Explains: How the 3DS Works

Kombo's Jeff Grubb explains in a video how the 3DS does depth without the use of glasses.

StoicGriffin5760d ago

It's still clear as mud, but I understand it a little better now haha

zootang5760d ago (Edited 5760d ago )

So this technology wouldn't work for a large screen at home. It could but it would mean that we (viewers) would have to sit on top of each other to get the sweet spot 3d effect. That is why glasses are needed?

wow 2:54 her boobs are huge

also i knew it worked somethign like that

gamingdroid5760d ago (Edited 5760d ago )

In short summary, real life 3D works by combining two images that are almost identical from your pair of eyes (i.e one image from each eye), but with a slighty different perspective. This is then combined to create a depth perception.

This is re-created on the Nintendo 3DS by having the screen project one image to your left eye and the other to your right. However, this is done to a specific location in front of the screen, what the article call the sweet spot. Everywhere else it won't be as good, unless there is a camera that can adjust for your location.

Clear as water now?

Theonik5759d ago

Correction, anywhere else and you only see either the left or right perspective of the scene in 2D.

poindat5759d ago (Edited 5759d ago )

The technology isn't new at all, it's been floating around in the form of 3D gifs for quite a while.

Theonik5759d ago

It's even older than that. 3D was discovered in the 1800s and the type of filtering the 3DS uses was invented back then.

beardpapa5759d ago (Edited 5759d ago )

AND.... i explained how it worked like many comment moons ago...... and why the same technology wouldn't really be applicable on larger scale home tvs....

yet i got disagrees...

boohoo. *sad panda*

edit: @nick 2:54 is definitely the best part of the video. *happy panda*

I just want to know if it is good for eyes to constantly be seeing those 3D images.

Fishy Fingers5760d ago

Probably not "good" for them. In fact opticians have warned that prolonged use "could" cause problems. But they say the same about standard TV or sitting in front of a PC.

Raendom5760d ago

Difference there though is that they say sitting in front of a PC for prolonged times WILL cause problems. But with 3D they simply say "might" cause problems.

gamingdroid5760d ago

Well the difference really is that humans as been sitting in front of screens for a long time. The effects are well researched. The vast majority don't have problems.

With 3D, there is little known about the effects. What is known is a large majority of people feel their eyes are tired after a 3D movie. This can of course be conditioned, but I think the technology is still in it's infancy and not quite ready for prime use yet. The 3D effects aren't still good enough so the brain is probably still straining to re-create the 3D image.

I think overall, it is more less accepted that very young children should not be viewing 3D content.

It's like CRT monitors. I used to have issue with the refresh rate on these and the glare, but the LCDs have all, but eliminated all those issues.

corneliuscrust5759d ago (Edited 5759d ago )

Turns out it might actually not be as bad for your eyes as watching a 2d screen is :P

There are many studies under way, here is one expert's findings

God how brilliant. This one just got stuck in my head >_>

BannedForNineYears5760d ago

Wow, that's amazing.
So it's actually the 3DS's monitor that's doing all the work.

Pandamobile5759d ago (Edited 5759d ago )

No. It's the same shit as with any 3D renderer. The 3DS has to render the frame twice from two slightly different angle, the only thing special about the screen is that it doesn't require the glasses.

Watch the video again.

BannedForNineYears5759d ago

The monitor shoots two signals, both having different perspectives.
The monitor shoot 1 signal into each eye.
It's the monitor that does all the work. :P

I enjoyed both Rush games, I did think the action was sometimes too fast to see what was coming up in terms of hazards though, which meant replaying the same stage a bunch of times, other than that they were enjoyable, good special stages, 3D sections and bosses for the most part.

DS is one of the best consoles of all time. Such a rich library of software
Zelda were all glorious on it.
