RAGE Gameplay Preview | CVG

CVG: "But our fear with RAGE at this early stage? That it lacks the brains to match its drop-jaw beauty. id's previous big hitters - Doom 3 and Quake 4 - were criticized in some quarters for merely presenting a prettier version of the corridor shooters that came before it. There are shades of this when RAGE blocks off the open world and gets a bit linear. In the bowels of Wellspring, we see tired old ideas from long-forgotten games hyped as the second coming of gaming. Firing an electrical bolt into a pool of water to fry multiple mutants? Hmm. We're just hoping explosive barrels don't make the final cut. But maybe it doesn't matter. Doom 3 and Quake 4 were widely criticized by many, but widely loved by many more, too."

this game is gonna b sick! it looked awesome at e3

Hotel_Moscow5758d ago (Edited 5758d ago )

will wait till the game comes out to pass judgement

no need to get hyped up over looks

Hotel_Moscow5758d ago

i see their are 8 really really stupid peopl eon this site that would rather say the game is the best game they ever played even though they have never played it

REALLY

Mista T5758d ago

this is a freakin iD software game, the creators of Doom, Wolfenstien, and Quake. Don't be confused with Raven software and their games, iD hasn't created a new franchise since 1996 and that was Quake.

This will be a great game, especially because of John Carmack.

pixelsword5758d ago (Edited 5758d ago )

I will like Rage because I like John Carmack and I like Id's legacy games. Carmack is dead honest, which is a rarity in CEO's (if that's a proper term for his position). As far as Id Games, I've never seen one that I didn't like. As a matter of fact, I didn't get Borderlands or Fallout because I didn't want that genre to be "worn-out" in my mind when I played Rage.

Simultaneously, I will also not like Rage as much because I already know that no matter how good it will be that the original vision of this game was cut short so it could fit on three discs.

frameflip5757d ago (Edited 5757d ago )

I know what will be sick though: Elder Scrolls V on RAGE engine! You heard it here first!

Is this a driving game? I just saw the trailer and all I saw were cars racing and destroying each other.

cyberwaffles5758d ago

it's a fps, it's a free-roaming game, it's a racing game, it's a anything-goes kind of game. the game director said himself he doesn't even know what to consider the game to be.

NecrumSlavery5758d ago

Rage is basically like Borderlands. But let's see what the interface is. Borderlands is an RPG/Dungeon crawler/Shooter/Online Brilliance. I have lots of faith in id, and hope this is more than a open world shooter. I really hope their is a good RPG interface and more of a deep experience behind the glamour.

wicko5758d ago

I imagine its along the lines of borderlands, just with with a bit more emphasis on the driving.

MicroSony4Life5758d ago

The reason why I ask is because I am not that much into car games. I hope the car missions are side mission and I am not forced to do them to progress.

I hated Gears 1 and 2 for this because I dont like driving vehicles in games - same for Halo Reach I hope the spaceship fight is optional and we can skip, hated some Star War games because of the starship levels.

The real Colombian5758d ago

Graphics and gameplay look extremely polished from everything i've seen from this game.Day one purchase from me.

RememberThe3575758d ago

It looks amazing. I don't get it. The environments are amazing and the gameplay looks great. What exactly are they having on? People keep comparing it to Fallout or Borderland as if that's a bad thing. Borderlands is one of my favorite games and RAGE is looking to be even better.

IHateYouFanboys5758d ago (Edited 5758d ago )

people are hating on it for a few reasons:

1. its multiplatform. this is enough to make some people think itll be rubbish, despite the large majority of the best games of every generation being multiplatform.

2. its multiplatform AND it has better graphics and technology behind it than PS3 exclusives, meaning that it blows the whole 'teh PS3 is 3x more powerfulz than da Failbox 360' out of the water. if a multiplatform engine can produce a game that is not only FAR bigger in scale than any PS3 exclusive, AND look FAR better graphically while doing so, it makes for many disgruntled/angry N4G PS3 fanboys - which, lets face it, make up probably 75% of N4G these days.

if you dont believe me about that second comment, watch this get 50+ disagrees as soon as they all get home from school.

personally i cant wait for Rage. it looks incredible. the only question is which console ill buy it for, and i wont know that until its out.

SOAD5758d ago

"if you dont believe me about that second comment, watch this get 50+ disagrees as soon as they all get home from school."

it's Sunday.

And the tech behind RAGE isn't better than the tech behind God of War 3 or Killzone 3. There's a lot of stuff going on on-screen in those games. RAGE looks fantastic but static.

Greywulf5758d ago (Edited 5758d ago )

trolling.

You're also getting disagrees because you're lying about Rage's performance, just like you guys ALWAYS hype the performance of a multiplat, until it releases..

then as always

you hide and run behind another "Metro2033"... Its like this every multiplatform release because the 360 has no titles on its own that can be better than any PS3 exclusive.

As always..

But the reason Rage is hated on, is because theres nothing behind the hype. Clearly on PC Screenshots with 1000x Anti Aliasing which isn't possible on consoles, and nonsense from the developers.

It will be the next Metro2033 to come out and flop on consoles because the 360's hardware can't manage to provide its owners with a definitive title that clears the performance of the PS3's library.

PS3 and 360 owners can both agree on one thing though, there sure as hell isn't any 360 game that blows away "TEH PS3 is 3x moh powahful" argument... and thats a fact.

PS3 owners don't have to hype multiplats, unlike 360 owners on the site. They get scrutinized, not "MAN THIS MUST BE GOOD" because you're in a gaming drought.

Active Reload5758d ago

No one has really seen what all the tech behind RAGE can do. People complain about the tone of the game not having much going on at one time on the screen. People should understand that this game isn't about war. Its a post-apocalyptic game, meaning it will probably be more in line with quest and survival. I'm just assuming all this because of the theme we've seen many times before and yet we haven't seen but a minute portion of RAGE. Games like COD, KZ, Crysis or Gears are all about some type of war. I'm very certain iD tech 5 engine can pull off even more stuff then what we've seen so far.

Double Toasted5758d ago

Cry more Greywulf...cry more. From here on out, thats what it will be. People pointing out 3rd party games that look better and will play better than your favorite console's exclusives. And this wouldn't happen if people like yourself and even some of Sony's devs, try to sale that bullshit mantra "not possible on the 360". Rage, Crysis 2, Gears 3...yeah.

IHateYouFanboys5758d ago

@SOAD: "it's Sunday. "

where you live maybe, but not in Australia where I am. its 10am monday morning here.

@SOAD: "And the tech behind RAGE isn't better than the tech behind God of War 3 or Killzone 3. There's a lot of stuff going on on-screen in those games. RAGE looks fantastic but static."

well it is better, but hey, you probably wouldnt understand why. what tech does god of ware 3 have? its got some fancy Anti-aliasing.

AI? PS2 quality. never does anything other than follow set attack patterns that differ between enemies.
Graphics? its got some fancy Anti-aliasing, and the Kratos character model is insanely detailed. apart from that though, its just regular fare.
Framerate? variable, between 30-40fps the large majority of the time.

the tech behind GoW3 is more of a refinement of a PS2 engine than groundbreaking technology.

Killzone 3s tech, well really all it has going for it is the AI, a good particle system, and the fancy lighting. its a linear corridor shooter essentially. 30fps, blur filters to hide low resolution textures, and really not much else going on.

@Greywulf: "But the reason Rage is hated on, is because theres nothing behind the hype. Clearly on PC Screenshots with 1000x Anti Aliasing which isn't possible on consoles, and nonsense from the developers. "

60fps, open world, graphics that pretty much every publication describes as absolutely beautiful and the best on a console - including the PS3 - and its made by id software, the guys who basically invented the genre and have been behind some of the best engines of all time.....yet you think theres 'nothing behind the hype'? epic, epic lols.

Mista T5758d ago

you must be on crack man, pretty ignorant.

Ihateyoufanboys pretty much pwned everyone with that 2nd post. Just saying...

MRMagoo1235758d ago

yes he "pwned" everyone with lies and bs wow you are easily impressed i guess, have u seen this game running it looks like borderlands but a lil more realistic in art direction there is nothing high tech or special about it its an average game made by average game makers.

cyberwaffles5758d ago

fallout 3...eat your heart out. NOW THIS is a idsoftware game. and just wait till doom 4 comes out. i'm going to go ahead and declare it as the next graphics king.

nveenio5758d ago

If Fallout 3 had these graphics (or even just the animations), it would be freak'n amazing. It already has gameplay, but sometimes the graphics and animations would really ruin a moment for me.

siyrobbo5758d ago

well zenimax now owns both bethesda and ID, so i wouldn't be surprised to see Bethesda utilize the tech

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada072519d ago (Edited 2519d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X142519d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase2518d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted2518d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster2518d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack2518d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH2513d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
