Sony Steals Controller Designs?

The controller is one of the simplest ways we interact with the games we play and while there have been other attempts, such as motion controls, to ingratiate players with the ability to control action on screen, thing have remained relatively unchanged for the last three decades. However, it seems that many signs would to the fact that Sony hasn’t necessarily been completely original with their controller design. Once the universal symbol of what a controller is supposed to be, it may simply have just been a pedigree of what seemed to be the best on the market at the time.

I think that Sony should do an xbox360 controller/dualshock 3 hybrid controller for the next playstation

now i know im going to get flamed for this
but i really think one controller that takes the best of both worlds would be really great

ZombieAutopsy5740d ago

Agreed, i really like the position of the analogs for the PS controllers but the overall shape for the xbox controller is a little more comfortable (at least if you're using a wired one that doesn't have that huge battery pack on it)

UltimateIdiot9115740d ago

I say it comes down the user. I find the DS design much more comfortable than the xbox controller.

ZombieAutopsy5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

Yea i should of said in my opinion, I don't think the ds3 is uncomfortable i just like how the xbox controller seems a little more filled out it just seems to fit better in my hand.

-Alpha5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

I think the Xbox controller is better IMO. Sony should have improved the Dualshock however, and they had some dumb design decisions too.

From a design perspective the triggers on the PS3 are really dumbfounding. I can't complain about the feel or analog sticks because it does come down to preference (And personally I'm fine with it) but here is what I love about the 360 controller:

-Indented analog sticks= better grip
-Analog sticks not on the same axis, thumbs don't collide for bigger hands (personally I'm fine with this on the PS3)
-Trigger design clearly better
-Resistance with the analog sticks-- when I move from the 360 to the PS3 the PS3 controller feels VERY loose.

I think Sony ought to adopt some of these things, especially with the triggers. I've never really heard many complaints from the 360 design, aside from the battery but I know many people who have complained about the size of the PS3 controller. Oh, the dpad on the 360 is god-awful. But luckily it's not used that importantly in games.

Funny thing though, is that the 360 controller is more of an evolution of the Dreamcast controller. Hell, the 360 uses the same placement for the face buttons triggers, shoulder buttons (which didn't exist prior to the 360 on MS's console), etc that Sony had with the Dualshock.

Here's the thing with Sony: when they made their own controller (the boomerang) they got heavily criticized. The Dualshock clearly comes from the Nintendo controller and so does the Move. But who the hell cares?

Look what happened with the Boomerang and MS's awkward Black and white buttons, and the placement of the face buttons on the original Xbox controller.

Anyways, I really don't give a damn if Sony or MS or anyone stole. Somebody had to start the design, and if the design was good, then why would you want to alienate the consumers and make a controller that is different?

MicroSony4Life5740d ago

Taken something from each other would benefit both of the.

-Alpha5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

Oh, by the way I've seen it before but this chart is completely biased. I love how it implies Kinect is an original MS creation. The sole purpose is to show Sony lacks innovation or original thought, but it's just a controller FFS.

Of course they leave out the Eyetoy because then we'd have a red line connecting it to Kinect.

Also, weren't those early MS controllers for the PC? Hence the innumerable face buttons? If MS had a console back then wouldn't they use the same design they use today? The same one Sony and Nintendo have? It's pointless to fault Sony for this. Yes, the design can be traced to Nintendo-- Hell I'm sure it can even go back farther to even older controllers, but what's the point?

Hell the Wiimote comes from TV remotes. The sharing of ideas is great, let's not get upset that it happens.

Genesis55740d ago

Yeah really. Shouldn't there be a picture of the PS eye right beside kinect.

SoSLy5740d ago

@ Alpha Male

I dont think those triggers were suppose to feel as triggers.

I read an interview that even said that they were meant to feel like throttle for racing games ;)

Megaton5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

The triggers on DS3 feel great for racing games, better than the 360's triggers. Vice versa for shooters, which is why R1 is usually mapped for shooting. I never understood people claiming their thumbs bang together while using the DS3's analog sticks. I have pretty big hands, and they don't even come close. Grip has never been an issue either, but I do like the extra resistance on the 360's analogs. I would like a 360 controller with a proper D-pad and symmetrical analog placement.

ZombieAutopsy5740d ago

Well said Alpha, well said.

DarkTower8055740d ago

I never understood the arguement that the DS controller is too small. My hands are big, and the DS has been fine for me. Of course, I've been gaming with a DS since the PS1 so my hands are freakin molded in the shape of a DS controller by now. The only thing that the DS lacks is trigger-style R2 and L2 triggers, but I bought aftermarket triggers, so its not too big of a deal.

The xbox controller feels too clunky to me, but that's not to say I speak for everyone. If Sony could manufacture a hybrid controller, then I'm sure that would attract some gamers to the darkside. In the end, having the option to game on a 1st party controller that fits your needs is the best option out there.

-Alpha5740d ago

Making a hybrid controller really is the best solution. I don't see why both Sony and MS can't do that.

But with Move coming out I don't think Sony cares. At least they've fixed the triggers.

Regarding it being used for racing games, the addition is so minor and the concept of putting it for racing games is so limited because

a) Not many racing games compared to shooters
b) Regardless, the issue is with fingers slipping.

I think the smart decision should have been to make the triggers made of rubber, or add some grip.

Oh a little off topic:

First with my DS2 and now with my SIXAXIS, I notice that when I play my PS3/PS2 the next day an oily residue appears on the analog sticks. They smell a little weird but I just wipe them off. Idk why its happened, perhaps excessive usage? My sister's controllers are just fine though she plays a lot less than me.

Noctis Aftermath5740d ago

For the next playstation i just want the DS to be a bit better shaped for your hands and more importantly have better grip.

SilentNegotiator5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

I suppose we could go on a hunt and find the creators of button-technology and claim that Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft copied THAT group, hmm?

Technology evolves, ideas revolutionize. That's how things work.

And thank you, Ps2, for solidifying the two analog stick console standard (With your father console, Ps1, laying the grounds for you to bring it to fame with the dualshock 1).
These haters might still be playing Goldeneye controls if it weren't for it.

ExplosionSauce5740d ago

Even the PSP used it.

I guess haters gotta hate :P

ThanatosDMC5740d ago

Wash your hands and try not to eat and play or at least keep something handy to wipe your hands on. For it to actually smell, i dont know what else to say.

ExplosionSauce5740d ago

Don't get it. What's your point??

It doesn't change what I said. It's still true.

rockleex5740d ago

The controllers you use to play Warhawk on PS1.

But it was more like THREE-AXIS seeing as how it was only tilt-sensing.

PS Move technology was tech demoed as early as 2001 for the PS2 Eyetoy.

Kinect technology was tech demoed on the PS2 with 3DV's Z camera.

Dual analog sticks were thought of by Sony, and it helped solidify shooters on consoles.

kneon5740d ago

This chart completely ignores the dozens of other controllers that pre-date many of these. I have a box in the garage somewhere full of different PC controllers going back to the Apple ][ era. Also Sony were working on motion control long before the Wii, I've posted links to the 10 year old patents plenty of times already that contain drawings that look pretty much like the Move

Not only did they leave out the eye toy but surprisingly they left out the sidewider controller with motion control. It wasn't very good but it did come out before the Wii and sixaxis.

The lower resistance of the PS3 sticks makes it harder for less skilled players, but it means you can react faster, you just have to get used to it. And personally I hate the asymmetrical layout of the Xbox controller, it just feels wrong.

jadenkorri5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

i think examiner.com should be shutdown, that type of journalism, well, opinion based crap should not be posted. Just another flame bait article to get people (preferably the ps3/360 fanboys) up in arms to click on their website.

And to this lame a$$ article, Sonys ps1 dual shock controller was the first controller to implement dual analog sticks on console. In April of 1997. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
Long before the game cube and xbox released after 2000 with dual analog sticks.( http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... Force feedback was implemented into the N64 controllers but was not standardized in the n64 controller, was a add on. Sony was again first to standardize that with the launch of the ps1 dual shock controller in April of 97. The home key was first implemented by sony in its PSP at launch in Japan December 12, 2004, ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... long before the 360 was released with its Iconic X home key ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... which launched in Nov of 2005. I'm not even gonna bother posting info about eye toy vs kinetic, its just retarded if someone thinks MS developed it before sony. All in all, we owe alot to Sony for setting the foundation for the future in gaming. Competition breeds innovation, and I'm sure that boomerang could of been the best controller ever, we will never know now will we?

@ rockleex
what are you smoking, six axis was never on ps1

sikbeta5740d ago

@captain-obvious

Why copy the design of the x360 controller, It'd make more sense to take it from the Gamecube controller, which is almost the same and is far more comfortable...

ian725740d ago

I don't have any problem with my thumbs banging together with the DS conroller, and I have medium to large size hands. The triggers(R2/L2) on DS3 controller are quite good for racing games. L1/R1 are better for shooters.
The DS3/Sixaxis is a very light controller and easy to use, I have no problems with its design at all. I also use a Logitech controller for my PC and its designed exactly the same as DS3, apart from the sixaxis movement.
I cannot comment about the 360 pad as I haven't used one.

No Way5739d ago

How about they just release multiple 'official' controllers for their system. That are different in shape. That way, you can choose a controller that looks like it may be more comfortable in *Your* hands..

Darkstorn5740d ago

The Dualshock is a bit uncomfortable for those with larger hands, but it's still a superior design.

Next gen, all Sony has to do is make the L2/R2 triggers concave, like actual triggers. That will be the perfect controller.

HDgamer5740d ago

I have larger hands and they are still comfortable. It's just a preference really.

evilmonkey5015739d ago

I use these real triggers on my ds3. Throwing knives and stun grenades has never been easier. No slipping off the convex button anymore. :)

http://www.amazon.com/PS3-D...

JackBNimble5739d ago

I have large hands and I have never even had the thought that the DS3 was to small or uncomfortable. Infact I have always found the 360 controller to big and awkword for my preference.

On topic: It looks like MS controllers are more of a ripoff of nintendos controllers then the PS ever where.

Darkstorn5739d ago

@evilmonkey-

I purchased Realtriggers a few months ago. I really like them, but other people use my controllers they take them off. I have no idea why.

Imperator5740d ago

There's a reason Sony has stuck to the same design for 15 years. It works well, and is great for games. The only thing the 360 controller has is the triggers, but that's it.

The 360's face buttons are too plastic and get stuck easily, the analogs are stiffer and their positioning is not ideal, the bumper buttons are too small, the D-Pad is horrible, and the battery pack is way too huge. I don't understand why people would say the 360 gamepad is better.

baker_boi5740d ago

I really hope Sony ditches these "triggers" all together. Gimme my damn shoulders back.

Sony got a lil too over zealous when put those "no-foundation, pseudo triggers" on that DS Controller man.

It was just dumb...

SoSLy5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

Feels good on racing games and every other games. I dont think Sony wants you to use it as "triggers" but as the gas pedal in your car

CrippleH5740d ago

In fact if you look at the 360 pad you notice that it's influenced by the DS2. LB and RB and the dual analog which DS1 started. DS1 was influenced by the SNES controller but added L2 and R2, coupled with dual analog sticks, rumble that was influenced by N64 rumble pack.

Mr Tretton5740d ago

Well said Imperator. Want me to sign your PS3?

ThanatosDMC5740d ago

People are trying to forget that the DS2 influenced xbox to make their giant controller smaller and it even copied button/analogue placements everything closer to what a ps controller without infringing on the patents.

rumplstilts5739d ago

I prefer the Analog Stick positioning on 360. Probably cause I have big hands though :/

crzyjackbauer5740d ago

i think we all got bored with the DS
ok ps2 had dualshcok 2 but i was actually looking foward to using
the boomerang controllers for ps3
the DS is not a bad controller it just needs improvement
the DS2 has better Rumble than DS3 and the triggers just feel clunky sometimes, sony didint really improve much

on the other hand MS messed up with its first Xbox controller
they improved with the s-contoller and the 360 controller is even better
i hope for xbox720 the controller has a better d-pad

Sony i want my boomerang Controller

Blaine5740d ago

I agree with you. I would at least have liked get to try the boomerang controller. Apparently it was more ergonomic.

I've been gaming with the DS for so long that I'm totally used to it--it feels completely natural. Some people think the 360 controller is better, but I'm so comfortable with the DS so I disagree with them. Lately though I've started to feel that it's too small.

IMO the button and sticks placement is perfect, but the controller grips need to be bigger. I've gotten used to holding the controller right inside the joint where my fingers meet my palm, which gives an excellent grip, but gets rather uncomfortable after long sessions. Maybe if I could hold it directly in my palm, instead, it'd be more comfortable, but the controller is too small for that.

Sevir045740d ago

The controller aint broken so i'm glad. all though the boomerang was looking interesting. none the less, the trigger butons arent triggers at all. they were made for racing games. which is why they feel the way they did. its also why EVERY shooter released on the PS3 and PS2 have all mapped the shoot button to R1. Because the devs themself know that the triggers arent meant for that kind of intereface on the DS... and it works well. people play KZ and R2 and all the other cookie cutter shooters that gets released on the PS3 no prob with R1. If it aint broke dont fix it.

Poseidon5740d ago

I find the DS design much more comfortable than the xbox controller.

absolutecarnage5739d ago

This is just stupid of course the system of choice is going to have a more comfortable controller, i mean if you play with something long enough its going to feel natural, the only thing i have to say is i hate the ps3 triggers suck and the d-pad the 360 controller sucks

pixelsword5740d ago

That pic-chart was full of fail.

1. it was barely viewable

2. a bunch of arrows with barely readable dates are useless when they don't establish the dates of the other controllers

3. Move's prototype was around before anyone heard of the Wii:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

4. The eyetoy was around before Kinect

5. The motion control for the PS3 controller was around on the PS2

People keep on putting up garbage and wonder why people start to hate gaming articles

iPlayGamez5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

1. you could enlarge the picture if you actually scrolled down to "slidshow"

2. once again you could enlarge & why do we need to NES controller date

3. move's proto type doesnt resemble the move today. old one didnt even have buttons. Sony didnt copy the concept of move they copied the design. the navigation controller looks alot like a nunchuk

4. ture they was clearly biased against sony for not putting in an PSEye with a line to kinect

5. PS2 had an accelerometer? u have link? original ps3 controller (boomerang) didnt even have sixaxis.

kneon5740d ago

@pixelsword

re #3 The original patent drawings show a ball on a stick and talk about the accelerometers to determine orientation. The shape was already there and they just added buttons, which are a pretty obvious addition. But really what other shape would you use for a general purpose one handed controller? It's going to be a wand/bar shape as that's what works best. Same for the nunchuck, it's going to resemble the left side of a dualshock, which just happens to be similar to the Wii nunchuck.

But I would have done away with the nunchuck and put the analog stick on the Move controller. It may not have been as comfortable to use the analog stick but it would mean there is only one kind of controller. Alternatively they could have put a ball on the nunchuck as well but I'm sure they are just trying to keep the cost down.

pixelsword5740d ago (Edited 5740d ago )

@ iPlayGamez:

Actually,

1. I did enlarge it, it doesn't change the size, it just puts it in a slideshow (of 1 pic out of 1... =/ )

2. You need the dates of every controller on the table for a chart to be clear or to establish a point. When you leave data out, the data that is left out could contradict the point or change the arrangement of the arrows

3. The basic components of a motion-controlling wand is there; if you add buttons, you just have buttons to a motion-controlling wand. If you take away the motion-controlling wand, you just have a controller... not withstanding that it's a prototype.

4. They were biased; and the fact that they scrawled next to the boomerang controller something along the lines of "this is what happens when Sony thinks for themselves" doesn't seem like they used rationality as well.

5. I have a link below, but here it is again

"You're right about the dual sticks, and I forgot about the motion control vid:

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

seeing how Pelican and Sony still enjoy a profitable and symbiotic relationship with the chargers and other accessories, it's not doubt that on some level there had to be some collaboration, seeing that there were no court case involved with the controller."

P.S.

If you want to relay the fact that pelican made the motion controller, well, then you'll undermine your point #3, whereas having the controller work in the z-dimension as well as the x and y, and having it wireless are additions that cannot be denied, plus the fact that either something so fundamentally basic may be different from DS3, or that a collaboration with pelican was had is obvious... seeing that they did not or could not be sued.

@kneon

Adding buttons to a controller shouldn't be seen as a rip-off for two obvious reasons:

1. It was a prototype: the ball for all we know could have been styrofoam. they added multi-colored lights as well, but it could be said they were copying Simon since it's also obvious that Simon has multicolored lights on one device that you use to play a game, if we were to split hairs:

http://mygamesonline.net/im...

2. almost every controller that exists has buttons: don't forget, they had their hands on Kinect before Microsoft did and rejected it based upon the two things Move has according to them: buttons and lack of lag. There's a third reason which is now clear to see: misinterpreting movements, which happens in a variety of cases (players with skirts, tall guy with short guy, etc.)

BannedForNineYears5740d ago

Bottom line.
Every single controller ripped off of the Tennis for two/Magnavox Odyssey/TV controllers.

C_SoL5740d ago

Wasn't Sony the one to introduce dual analog sticks in gaming?....

iPlayGamez5740d ago

The 360 controller is the only GOOD controller this gen. The PS3 controller is a useless design. It forces gamers to perform some sort of finger yoga to use. The thumb sticks together with the skinny shoulder triggers is flat out dumb. There are technical ( read:lag ) issues with the thing to. PS3 fans delusional on the topic as usual.

" Form follows function ", not the other way around. Sony, we do it our way because we like the wrong way.

mrv3215740d ago

Erm yeah... good.

The batteries die. You have to buy new batteries OR BUY another Microsoft product to charge them. With the PS3 you plug in a USB-B which is the most common USB's and your off.

Yeah the controller has LAG... everything does, it's called SCIENCE. If there is a DISTANCE between two thing then it takes time for one thing to reach the other thing BECAUSE there's a universal speed limit. Speaking of LAG P2P... just saying.

dragon825740d ago

Coming from one of the biggest Xbox fanboys on this site your opinion doesn't really hold much weight with me. In my opinion the Xbox 360 controller is not as well designed as the DS3.

mastiffchild5739d ago

Controllers are a matter of preference, pureand simple. All the talk about the R2/triggers/L2/shoulder button also confuses me. With the 360 pad the triggers are good fdor shooters but I prefer thew DS3 for fighting and racing games by a mile and for shooters I have a trigger type set of add ons and generally just use the one for R2 where there's a choice for that control scheme rather than the oft used R1 as primary fire in PS shooters.

I feel the way round the DS3 is allows me to customise it for certain genres more readily than the 360 pad(which, as a lefty, I think it 's set up the wrong way round for me and a mirror image model for us left handers could be a revelation-who knows? I think it WAS set up with the righty majority in mind though)as you can't change it's triggers back to more trad shoulder buttons if a game demands you do so for comfort or precision. With the DS3 I can have triggers/one trigger for shooters and the bare buttons for fighters/racers which, to me, is better and more versatile and is the main reason(controller preference) in me buying all my multis for my PS3.

I know a lot of peole really like the 360 pad but just as I can't say the DS3 is empirically "bretter" than it just cos I like it better they cannot tell me the 360 pad is the outright "winner" here either.

The Dual Shock design has, already, been successful for a long time and evolved with gaming to fit our needs and customisation options like triggers and "sniper" stick lengtheners for your aiming and fine adjustments make it VERY versatile and allows for optimising your scheme for certain games. The 360 pad, to me, seems a bit right hand biased, a bit too bulky and s harder to get to suit all types of game on it's platform and you must feel it's made with, primarily, shooters in mind.

I also had a GREAT little clip-on doodad for my DSi/DSlite which turned the face buttons into a kind of analogue nub/stick for games like Moon, Dementium or Metroid:Hunters-I lost it but I'd love someone else to tell me if they know anywhere you could get another! It was great, worked real well and I really want another one-one that fitted PSP would be cool for playing Retribution with the "pure" control scheme as well copme to think!

Anyway, main point is Sony have added JUST as much to controller evolution as anyone over the years and the piece and chart is biased to all hell-and obviously so too. Fact remains if you like the 360 pad best then THAT is the best for YOU and the same goes for the DS3, Gamepad/classic Ninty controller, Wiimote and chuck, Move or Kinect. Hell, even one of the third party controllers from the likes of MadCatz might be your preference but that's ALL we have when all the controllers available have pros and cons which make them better for some and worse for other people and it's the very last thing we should have flame wars over or biased internet articles, for that matter.

Controller preference also remains the best reason, in my eyes, for an unbiased person to decide which consoe they like getting their multiplatforms for. It's important but isn't a cause for argument as no one can tell you you're wrong for liking a controller you personally find more comfy or more effective. The extrra customisation gives the DS3 an extra edge for me but if I liked the 360 pad better to start with even that would make little difference. Can't we leave this one down to individuals and stop trying to find winners when all we have is choice?

The DS3 is great for people that have small to average sized hands so it will work for the majority. If you happen to have larger hands like me you may feel that the 360 controller is more comfortable. IMO the PS4 is definitely gonna need a controller redesign. Nothing to serious but some tweaks. Of course the next 360 will need to have a controller with a way better d-pad.

AngryTypingGuy5739d ago

The PS controller is severely outdated. It's time for a change. Make something that is more ergonomically correct like MS's controller.

SoSLy5739d ago

"Never fix it when its not broken"

Ever heard of it?

Sony sticking with the DS design cause no one is complaining and it works everytime.

The Lazy One5739d ago

That's a stupid saying that focuses on technological stagnation. Here's a short list of things we wouldn't have if we never fixed what wasn't broken:

-telephone's with buttons
-cell phones
-High definition media storage formats
-Flat screen televisions
-multi-core CPUs
-Solid State Hard Drives
-digital cameras

the list goes on and on and on.

AngryTypingGuy5738d ago (Edited 5738d ago )

You're right Sosly, the PS controller isn't broken. It's just ancient in design. Here's what would happen if Sony updated their controller: people would complain and moan, but then after five minutes of actually playing with a more ergonomic controller, they'd know how much better it feels in their hands.

P.S. - You can't even get the saying right. What you meant to say was, "If it's not broken, don't fix it". You're welcome.

I agree, controller designs are all roughly the same, for one simple reason, it works. Sure some put triggers here and analogs there, but when it comes down to it the Dualshock controller is the same rough design its been for the longest time.

Anybody who doesn't see the blatant wii influence in the move simply doesn't WANT to see it. Anybody can tell you how similar they are.

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle11d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit11d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog11d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog11d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad11d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_11d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage11d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda11d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.

Sony and Nintendo are both thriving and I'm happy, thank goodness for them or otherwise the whole gaming industry would be in shambles if they only had PC to rely on!

dveio79d ago

• Total G&NS revenue: 10.5 billion USD
• Operating profit: 900 million USD
• Hardware sales: 8M units shipped
• Software sales: 97M units
• PSN MAU: 132M

vs. Xbox:

• Total gaming revenue: 5.96 billion USD
• nothing else gets reported

__y2jb79d ago

Xbox operating costs are without a doubt eye wateringly high, way way way higher than Sony. GP is costing them an absolute fortune to operate.

Tapani79d ago

That is a very solid operating profit. It's not net, obviously, but still a very healthy amount of cash you make after cost of debt and taxes (+ other expenses), and can invest into R&D and future endeavours. And give back to your shareholders or buy back shares.

DivineHand12579d ago

It would be in Sony's beat interest to not rush next generation. Let 2029 or 2030 be the start of next generation. There is clearly plenty of demand for the PS5 and gamers are not asking for more at this time.

S2Killinit79d ago

Yup especially with the price of tech going up. They already have the PRO to hold them over.

__y2jb79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

Exactly this. Let Xbox wither on the vine for a couple more years and there will be nothing left.

fr0sty79d ago

I fully agree for 2 reasons:

1. Microsoft seems to be in a hurry to release the new Xbox, if they do at all... AMD speculates a 2027 release. This will hurt them in the long run, because:

2. Datacenters are buying up ALL the RAM, and some RAM manufacturers have stopped making RAM for consumer products entirely, while the other remaining ones are scared to ramp up their production capacity to make more RAM because they're worried this whole AI thing is a bubble that is about to pop, and they don't want to be caught holding the bag when it does pop. So, for now, it costs $300-400 for 32GB of DDR5. That's the MSRP for some entire consoles.

If Microsoft drops the new Xbox now, it's going to cost them a fortune. If Sony holds their cards a moment and lets PS5 cook for a while, as it's showing no signs whatsoever of slowing down in sales, then by the time PS6 is ready to drop, RAM prices should have stabilized, allowing Sony to devote much more of their budget towards making PS6's CPU and GPU more powerful, in addition to the tech itself maturing and the available CPU and GPU parts being much more powerful for the same price point than they would be if released today. So, we'd get a super powerful PS6 in say, 2029, that won't have to cost $700-800. They speculate, based on the current specs, that the new Xbox will cost north of $1,000, and that was before the RAM shortage came into the picture. It's definitely going to be even higher now that RAM costs so much.

MS will be shooting themselves in the foot (again) if they try to drop a new Xbox now, and Sony would be wise to capitalize on that mistake by holding their cards a while longer, raking in more of those PS5 profits, and then dropping a new console as soon as the hardware market stabilizes from this AI datacenter BS.

darthv7279d ago

7 years is a hurry...? Its the same amount of time between XBO and series. The same amount of time between PS3 to PS4 and PS4 to PS5. The 360 was 8 years between it and XBO.

If they do release first, and then Sony a year or two later... is it not possible for prices to come down in that time?

repsahj79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

I think Switch 2 beat PS5 during December 2025 that is why the gap decrease to 1m units. Because during black friday, I know PS5 sales is 2:1 against the Switch 2.

And I just want to add that the PlayStation 5 is currently 1.94 million units BEHIND the PlayStation 4 when you align launches. While Switch 2 is 10M ahead against the Switch 1 when you aligned covering it's first 7 months.

S2Killinit79d ago

I think you are forgetting to mention the chip shortages for PS5.

salis84479d ago (Edited 79d ago )

No one wants the Switch 2 to do badly.

PS5 being less than 2m behind PS4 is not a big deal; PS5 had to deal with COVID and ongoing supply and pricing struggles that clearly still exist today. Sales of software are incredibly strong, and the size of the community is bigger than its ever been.

PS5 is well on pace to exceed its early (2021) estimates of 110m by end of life even if that's 2027. PS5 will hit 100m before November and then sell another 6-8M in November + December.

PS5 is doing great, and so is Switch 2, it's good for everyone that they succeed, pitting the two against each other is more damaging than anything related to the sales of the two consoles individually.

repsahj79d ago

"No one wants the Switch 2 to do badly."

majority on this site tells otherwise.

Dexterio79d ago

@repsahj
Yup because they’ve been the anti consumer they are for so long and needs to be humbled 😆

CrashMania79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

I'd be lying if I said I didn't regret my purchase a bit. I mainly bought it for Mario Kart World, but I find it pales in comparison to 8. I'm annoyed that Nintendo charged money for a super barebones 'upgrade' to Jamboree, no new minigames? No new boards? Just some gimmicky low res camera mode. Oh and Midtroid Prime 4 let me down as well, yet to go back and finish it.

I don't want the Switch 2 to fail, it's contributing to a healthier console market with the death of xbox consoles. I'll get use out of mine long term, but some of Nintendo's decisions like the ones above just annoy me lol.

jznrpg79d ago

@respahj the only thing I want Nintendo to badly is the 80$ games so they lower the price.
