Leave Activision Alone (RunDLC)

[Editor's Note: The opinions expressed here are the views of the writer and do not necessarily reflect the views and opinions of the RunDLC staff.]

Everyone loves to hate the bad guy. For a while, that honor belonged to Electronic Arts. The publisher went through a dark period where it repeatedly failed to earn respect. NFL 2K fans hated it because the company snatched up the NFL rights, while “hardcore” gamers spat in its face because of EA’s reliance on sequels.

"On that note, I have two suggestions for you if you despise Activision.

1. If you hate Activision, stop buying its games. Even better, stop talking about Activision. My car has a dent in the hood, and I forget it exists because I don’t obsess over it every single day of my life.

2. If you hate Activision, go buy several thousands shares of Activision. Then you can attend investor meetings and scream at Bobby Kotick until you pass out.

Got it? I hope so. Now go play some video games."

GWAVE5796d ago

There is one big flaw with this article:

Activision isn't some passive entity. They (and the media) actively push their games at us as the biggest, best games EVARRR. I think if I didn't constantly hear "Call of Duty is the BESSSSST" all the time (when it is clearly not the "BESSSST") I would cut Activision more slack.

Darkstorn5796d ago

Couldn't agree more. Ignorance is not bliss, and ignoring Activision doesn't make a dent in their sky high profits. Only a concerted effort on the part of gamers can change Activision's unsustainable (and incredibly shitty) publishing policies.

God_Of_Epicness5796d ago

Activision is a good company no doubt. What makes them evil and bad is having Bobby Kotick as their CEO.

Baka-akaB5796d ago (Edited 5796d ago )

As long as activision's action are influencing other publishers decision , especially when it comes to dlc and prices , i have every rights to complain at the sight of their name and to moan endlessly .

Like said above , it's not a passive entity , even when fully ignoring it and not giving them a cent , they are a shaper of the market and a driveforce of the game industry .

EDIT :

that "if you dont like it you can ignore it" crap was fed to us too at the time of the first dlcs , like the (in)famous Oblivion horse armor . And now everyone who still ignore that crap is still feeling the consequences for the people that accepted it .

-Alpha5796d ago (Edited 5796d ago )

The problem with moaning is that no matter what people still buy the DLC and maps. The complainers and moaners mean nothing. Their non-activism doesn't hurt Activision because they run a profit regardless.

Is it a crime? Only if you don't feel like the product is worth it. I know of many people who have found more value in the $30 they spent on 10 maps than others who have found in whole games.

In CoD4 I got the maps for free (GOTY edition). I loved those four maps for $10. I could have easily spent that $10 on something like a PSN game. But I spent more time and enjoyed that map pack a lot.

Who am I to say what people are supposed to find value in? I'm not going to tell people how to spend their money.

The problem is definitely that other developers follow. And if we can't put our collective foot down then the industry will spiral in this sense.

The internet age has definitely brought such laziness and dissatisfaction with it. What I hate more than DLC is lazy games being released with the notion that they can "patch it down the line". MW2 being the main culprit here.

Elven65796d ago

So far, no publisher has increased the price of their map packs.

So far, two publishers are using multiplayer access redeem codes.

Gamers can put all their hate into one company but the reality is the others are in the business for the same reason, to make money.

UnSelf5796d ago

fanboys are worst than crackheads

you can tell them to their face that ur goin to charge them extra for DLC and theyll still buy it

if u spit in a crackheads crack, she'll fk u up

Aquanox5796d ago

I don't really get this. Activision has been in the eye of the twister ever since that problem with Infinity Ward but the reaction from fans has been moderate at most if your compare it to what happened with Electronic Arts and with enough reasons.

The problem with Activision is basically limited to one single scandal while Electronic Arts became a perfect model of what a developer house must never do. They went from one of the most beloved developers out there thanks to splendid titles like Need for Speed to the villian in the industry because they grew, they became powerful, the bought talented developers like Westwood, created fan loyalties and once there started to kill IPs with no mercy, milking the last shreds of fan devotion to those franchises. That's why people used to hate EA until they actually figured out they were in a straight road to worldwide shame with competitors like Ubisoft and Activision growing. They changed their model radically, stopped milking franchises and started to work on them with care and passion and on new ones and now Need for Speed is great again, Fifa, Madden and NHL are the best sport games, Battlefield and MOH are back to where they belong and I could go on. That is what a developer must do to survive here, show respect to their fans and their developers and that's where Activision failed with Infinity Ward, but it doesn't mean it will become the next EA. They made one big mistake but see, to be doing all on their hands to repair the damage, probably on time this could be settled as soon as this holidays season, whereas it took a whole generation to EA to have their respect back.

I agree with you mostly, HOWEVER, if Activision overcharges for maps and suceeds...other publishers may follow suit. THIS concerns me. But I agree with you 100% that people on N4G are soo emo in regards to Activision that its not even funny.

Redempteur5795d ago

someone is crying behind you , that person is really loud and follow you anywhere ...worse others are starting to cry too ..

so if i follow your advice i should not care and be annoyed by the voice until i snap and be really angry ?

or should i express my disgust of the situation is hopes that others who haven't started to cry can solve this situation ?

anyway good advice deadeck.... /s

well its gamers fault in the first place....stop feedin pigs

karl5796d ago

and then i found out it was dude...

electricshadow5796d ago

I have stopped purchasing Activision games. Hit 'em where it hurts - their wallets. I did exactly that.

It's that they are getting away with charging 15 dollars for a map pack.
THAT is what bothers me. Other developers and publishers are aware that Activision got away with overcharging DLC, they are going to do this too. Monkey see, monkey do.

Kotick Made $155 million from MS in the buyout, the little b*tch needs to stop whining. Thanks to this Microslop deal and massive industry consolidation thousands upon thousands of devs and other workers lost their livelihoods. This greedy piggie pervert needs shut up and f-off.

Microsoft needs to listen or risk irreparable harm to Call of Duty

Windows Central: "The money may keep rolling in, but Microsoft is the custodian of one of the biggest selling video game series in history. If something doesn't change, I fear we'll reach a breaking point and irreparable damage will have been done."

Because ms is so good at managing studios, surely they will get it right

franwex205d ago

In my view, they should probably merge MP with Warzone and essentially make it free to play like Halo Infinite. The campaign/zombies mode can be $30 yearly DLC. I know this would be insanity as most COD players essentially pay the full price of the game simply for the MP. However-with a shrinking player base they may have to consider it. Making it free would bring in a ton of players.

Profchaos205d ago

To late MW3 should have been a lesson but here we are two years later with a steaming pile a shite called blops7

Halo killer once arrived and technically call of duty killer also arrived, its name is Fortnite

dveio205d ago

Call of Duty was riding the revenue horse and charts for ~20 years. Whether undeserved or deserved.

But I endorse everyone to remind you that Microsoft could have decided differently when they took it over.

The money was certainly there, and they could have taken their time revamping the franchise:

Current-gen tech, manageable microtransactions, not imitating Fortnite and returning to core values of the franchise's origin.

They didn't.

Let's see next year. Hopefully without the then 13 years old PS4 and One hardware.

blacktiger205d ago

you need to stop saying "let see next year"
