How cheaters cheat: lag switches

If you have ever played a first person shooter online over Xbox Live you have probably heard someone using the term "lag switch." Oftentimes, when someone does really well in a game, they will be accused of having used a lag switch. What is a lag switch and how could using one make someone better?

I hate playing MGO because of
this. It really sad when losers have to
do this to win a game!

D4RkNIKON5789d ago

It has happened to me in Killzone 2 before. It would show the player get killed and then right after he dies it would show about 6 or 7 kills pop up from him. The side of the screen was constantly littered with kills coming from one guy and all popping up at once.

Commander_TK5789d ago

when your opponents r just standing in the respawn area when they´re actually not.

iPlayGamez5789d ago

when a guy purposly blow himself up with a garnade so he literally becomes some type of invisible ghost that can go around the whole map undetected and kill EVERYONE only way to stop him is by finding his original body and killing it again but if the original body is off a cliff he is unstoppable

REAL HACK i have saved replays of people doing this. People on youtube wont say how its done either not that i would even do that outside of private match.

PopEmUp5789d ago

there a guy that found glitch in "The fort" map WHERE he just stand at one place and just shoot at you, it pissed me off I even save the replay

Persistantthug5789d ago

I was told Lag Switches don't work with dedicated servers....

Is that true?

DaCajun5789d ago (Edited 5789d ago )

They work on any connection even dedicated servers. What it is doing is while you are playing the game locally on your pc/console your internet connection sends signals to the server to let it know what you are doing and sends signals back to you updating your console to what is happening for everyone in the match. Losers use a lag switch to cut the signal from their pc/console from getting to the server and syncing with it so it looks like you are frozen or slowed down to them making you an easier target so they can out maneuver you for the few seconds of the interruption then the server will then sync back up to their pc/console and all the kills they made will be registered. Depending on the games different things happen like the person lag switching seems invincible, invisible, or teleporting around the map. Seems to be getting more common these days. So pathetic.

Some people even use crappy internet connections to achieve the same affect.

Kick The Ass5789d ago

And some actually just has a bad internet connection.
Shouldn't call all laggers cheaters, some aren't even aware they're lagging :)
Just saying.

Pillage055788d ago

Kick the ass is right. Not everyone who lags is purposely cheating. The invisible/invincible effect in Uncharted 2 happened to my character once. When I figured out what was happening I just put the controller down. Good internet connections aren't always available in all areas. I just recently moved from a city to a small rural town (about 350 people) I was able to get a 1.5Mbps which barely gets by for most games as long as its the only device using the internet at the time. I really miss my 12Mbps connection...that was half the price I'm paying now. *sheds a tear*

Fact is if you game a lot in online competitive you've prob met a few of the rejects who employ this tactic. While the results differ from game to game form the slightly annoying to the outright mindnumbingly frustrating. Chances are you've considered looking into it if only too "level" the battlefield...

n so the cycle continues glitchers laggers modified controllers turbo macros aimbots etc jus losers with no life looking for attention online. N those they suckered in. Id feel bad for em if they weren't mostly sociopathic..

table5789d ago

MGO is the Outer Haven for glitchers and cheaters.

Darkstorn5789d ago

I've never had any problems with MGO, but Battlefield 1943 and Killzone 2 have a fair amount of 'lag switchers.'

table5789d ago

that's strange because MGO has always been shockingly bad for it yet the only thing I see in KZ2 is through the wall glitches. I've never once seen a lag switcher in KZ2.

Darkstorn5789d ago (Edited 5789d ago )

They may have fixed KZ2's problems. I haven't played the multiplayer in months.

Emmettcelticfan5789d ago

MGO is does have quite a few. But MGO in general is full of bad losers, if high leveled players are getting beat they will use the lag switch excuse in ordered to try and kick you. only yesterday i beat a sniper at his own game and was kicked as a result of him threathing to end the game if i wasn't kicked

BISHOP-BRASIL5789d ago

It's pretty common in SOCOM Confrontation too. This kind of chat is one of the worst because it's made on the user end of the connection, so there is nothing developers can do to combat most of it's effects... At least nothing without harming many players that simply don't have a good stable connection but play fair and don't blink or goes ghost like cheaters.

DatNJDom815789d ago

Super Street Fighter 4 as well. Im about average in that game but when I am beating some players with high BP points everything starts slowing down even when we both had all our bars filled. I lol @ it but it gets annoying after a while. I usually just disconnect.

crzyjackbauer5789d ago (Edited 5789d ago )

MGO Is a glitchfest
you can pull the ethernet cable off the ps3 for about a 3 seconds and it doesent disconect you, i had a friend that glitched ont MGO he show me a lot of glitches

crzyjackbauer5789d ago (Edited 5789d ago )

some people dont even know how to do it right, one time in MGO i was
playing this lagg switcher I knew he was a lag switcher because it always lagged and he would get a kill
but i was too fast for him, right before he would pull the switch i would get
a headshot on him, then it lagged and he would die 3 seconds after i shot him
turns out he was the host so i got booted

ZBlacktt5789d ago

Yep, I walked away from MGO after 1200 hours and 3 player's all level 14 ( when 14 was high ). Way, way, way to many cheaters in there to every enjoy yourself.

Rock Bottom5788d ago

This has been the most useful article(it might also be the only) to come from examiner, a good read.

To bad there is no way to prevent this.

Everyone is expose to play with this cheaters.

Gawdl3y5789d ago

Actually, there is a way to prevent it. Dedicated servers.

-Alpha5789d ago

Killzone 2 runs on dedicated servers does it not? Yet I've seen lag switchers on Killzone 2.

These cheaters will always exist because they go unpunished. I'd like to see stricter punishments in the forms of deranking, suspensions, bans, etc.

Bungie seems to do that, but there are still boosters in Halo.

Gawdl3y5789d ago

Yeah, KZ2 runs on dedicated servers. That form of lag switching is a bit different though. It's not an actual lag switch, but a way of spamming your network so as to cause you to seem to lag in place for a minute while you can still move around and shoot other people.

Best thing about KZ2 though, is like you said about Halo, GG usually resets the stats and level of boosters/cheaters/glitchers, as long as people report them.

Proxy5789d ago

Stricter punishment might well punish you, even though your a legitimate player. It's near impossible to tell the difference between "cheating lag" and natural and inevitable lag.

Surkov5789d ago

ways to prevent this.

Quite a few games have disconnect limits in there network code. If a player disconnects more than 3 or so times during a match that player is automatically kicked. So, if someone uses a lag switch more than the limit suggests, the player is kicked.

Darkstorn5789d ago

That might not be a good idea, though. In the U.S. and Canada, where high speed internet is slower and less reliable, innocent users could be kicked out of games just because of a less than ideal internet connection. I suppose it's the price that must be paid for getting rid of cheaters.

a_squirrel5789d ago

He's right, it kicks me all the time, every 3rd or 4th round on some games.
It sucks a lot cause we're usually near the end.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5788d ago

KZ2 have Dedicated and Host by Players.

xc7x5790d ago

this has been going on for years since last console gen

-Ikon-5789d ago

Socom and even the new one people do it

Surkov5789d ago

always been one of the easiest games to hack.

Hell, there's even a glitch in the PS3 version that lets you get all of the trophies.

MiloGarret5789d ago

Trophy glitches are not uncommon though. And it doesn't really hurt anyone.

GodsHand5790d ago

I know on the pc all you had to due was use a dial-up connection, oh the horrors. What I don't get is if you start to lag, and get something like 300 and above latancy, the server you just drop you if you go over a certain amount of time like 10-15 seconds.

BeaArthur5789d ago

It's sad that they go through that much trouble to cheat. Hopefully they will find a way to detect this.

kneon5789d ago (Edited 5789d ago )

Cheating via a lag switch is pretty easy, what about all the Wii Mario Kart cheats where people have hacked the code and/or system in order to cheat. I haven't played it since I finished unlocking everything over a year ago but at the time the amount of cheating on Mario Kart was just ridiculous.

On Mario Kart the cheating is just blatantly obvious so it's easy to spot, which may be part of the reason that it seems like it has so much more cheating

Xander7565789d ago

I just don't get why interrupting the connection helps the person. It should lag them out of the game!

Redempteur5789d ago

because a server update the status of everyone on a map as soon as they recieve the data .. the lag switch prevent that data from being sent ..and that happens before the server is allowed to disconnect you automatically ..and he won't usualy because once the lag switch finish all the data is sent ...

At this point the server update everyone and all the kills appears ..

Sprudling5789d ago

It's because of a technique called client-side prediction(*). Without it, using a lag switch would freeze yourself instead, allowing everyone else to kill you easily.

Indeed... Praise the Lord!

V0MIT_M0NSTER3291d ago

So glad that they won't mess with Banjo anymore.

-Foxtrot3290d ago

So you wouldn't want a proper Banjo-Threeie, Jade Empire or Kameo 2...really?

AZRoboto3290d ago

Or Crimson Skies. That was the shiz

FallenAngel19843291d ago

It's a shame we can't get another Banjo-Kazooie game

-Foxtrot3290d ago

Literally one that's called Banjo-Threeie and they start the game with Kazooie waking up in distress telling Banjo of a hardly nightmare while recapping Nuts and Bolts.

PhoenixUp3290d ago

Microsoft never could maintain a longrunning decent 3D platformers series of their own

AZRoboto3290d ago

I don't think "longrunning" is really necessary... Isn't Blinx the only one that got a sequel?

darthv723290d ago

Blinx needs to return if at least to show up Bubsy.

ninsigma3290d ago

Not sure if it was Xbox only back in the day but I'd love a current gen jet set radio!

Paytaa3290d ago

Jet Set Radio Future was only on Xbox. Fantastic game. Even better than Jet Set Radio for the Dreamcast in my opinion. Such a good soundtrack too

ninsigma3290d ago

Game was beast and deserves to come back on current gen. And hell yeah plus one for that soundtrack!

Review: Table Top Racing: World Tour (Xbox One) by The Gamerscore Whores

Without a doubt, one of our highlights from EGX Rezzed 2016 was Table Top Racing. It was almost a classic love tale…”As soon as we locked eyes… (enter mushy crap here…)” – We think you get the picture. It just reminded us of a time where gaming was much less complicated and way more colourful, however at the time the game was only due to be released on the PS4… That’s not a bad thing. It just mean’t that being my primary console of choice is Xbox One, we wouldn’t get to play this any time soon as the majority of my games and friends reside in the Microsoft ecosystem – so when we got word this was getting a release on Xbox One, we immediately put our hands up and said “Yes, Please!”.
