Can motion controllers save the game industry?

2010 hasn’t exactly been a good year for the video game industry. In fact, it’s been pretty lousy so far.

While the quality of major titles has been top-notch – with Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and God of War 3 leading the way – consumers, on the whole, just aren't buying games.

Does is need saving?
And no motion controls will never overtake the controller

Poseidon5762d ago

were becoming so involved with "newer tech" that were losing our roots as gamers and ourselves, seriously step back and wonder what the grim future might be like with only motion controllers, sucks huh?

anh_duong5762d ago

actually the industry is doing really well for both the hd consoles.. game sales are up considerably for the ps3 on a yoy and the launch of the 360s has boosted ms sales..

don't think the games industry needs savings

Danteh5762d ago (Edited 5762d ago )

The industry doesn't need saving

And did you notice what he said? "lukewarm sales of many casual console and handheld games remain a significant headwind to industry growth this year"

About fucking time companies stop scamming the "casual" crowd with games that aren't worthy of being shitted on... wtf? The future was, is, and will always be the hardcore, good titles, despite shovelware or temporal fads.

nintenflo5762d ago

Ill second that sackgirl - bubbles to u poseidon!!

ChickeyCantor5762d ago

"that were losing our roots as gamers and ourselves"

Its just you having a mental breakdown.
I for one hold on to oldschool gaming and embrace what the future brings.

Dont overdramatize it willya.

sikbeta5762d ago

Motion-controls is an ADDITION, it'll not save gaming, cos the Gaming Industry need GAMES, to be more precise VARIETY of Games

Gaming Industry doesn't need to be saved now, but if the trend of motion-controls as an excuse for [shovelware] or vice versa (it makes sense both ways cos it's big problem) and FPS everywhere, keep going, well, we'll be heading to a moment with huge problems like over-saturation and alienation that will affect the Industry like Last Time something similar happened [keyword is Atari]

RageAgainstTheMShine5762d ago (Edited 5762d ago )

BTW a biased to M$ article since its from Yahoo...

anyways if its aimed at making more money and mlking the consumers rather than improving the game play experience to the next level... it will destroy the gaming industry

M$ is all about aking money and stealing market share. They have never been known for innovation or starting a revolutionary product line. That is why M$ and Kinect must be stopped or there will be no more gaming industry to be saved.

does it need saving???

but the most important thing for me is... god i hope motion controls become the norm. or my gaming days will either come to an end, or i will have to become a pc gamer

AEtherbane5762d ago

Last time i heard, the video game market had expanded, and is making record profits, om not sure thats a sign that it needs to be saved....

Proxy5762d ago

In my view the "industry" is 60$ shovelware and overpriced DLC already on the disk.

Gaming will never be in jeopardy, but the industry might fail.

IntelligentAj5762d ago

I'm getting tired of these damn articles about the game industry needing saving. People aren't spending money on games because they have no discretionary spending money left after paying their bills. As people begin to have more security in their jobs and more confidence in the recovery of the economy the industry's sales will go back up. Any talk before then is premature

Christopher5762d ago

I didn't know the industry needed saving? If anything, the game publishers need to stop over producing and trying to turn every franchise into a AAA title. Otherwise, games are selling and people are making tons of money when they deserve it (and some when they don't).

Inside_out5762d ago

Does anyone read the article anymore. It's actually a very well writen and researched piece. The Industry as a whole is $67 MILLION behind last years numbers at this time.

M$, Halo Reach, COD and Kinect will save the indusrty this holiday. Sony has packed it's bags and is concerned with 2011 and 3DTV's which they believe will be the new big thing and save their companies life.

Sony Move is a mess right now, costing $210 for 2 controllers WITHOUT the PS3 console. This has been discussed at E3 and the same problem still exists for Sony today...how are they gonna market this??? M$ has said the 4 gb 360 S ( $199 alone ) Kinect bundle will cost $299 with one game. The nintendo Wii costs $210 with 2 sports game and 1 controller.

The PS3 Bundle, as it stands right now, will cost $399 with 1 controller and 1 game. Sony the most expensive and confusing console bundle by far. Add to that they plan on selling a P/camera, half of one controller ( WTF ) and a game, bundled, for $100...what are these guy's thinking. Throw in 3DTV ( at least $3000 ) and $150 3D glasses, Sony won't be saving anything industry wise this holiday.

Geriatric Hero5762d ago

That's quite a spin you got going there. But let me see if I get this straight: M$, Halo Reach, COD and Kinect will save the industry this holiday, because Sony delayed GT5 and Move to 2011 and also the new COD game has been canceled for the PS3... hhhmmmm... Is that it? Am I doing it right?

Information Minister5762d ago

Oh, the industry needs saving alright... It needs to be saved FROM motion controls!!!

Ascalon945762d ago

exactly what I was thinking.

bomboclaat_gamer5762d ago

i had no clue the industry was dying
dont approve

BeaArthur5762d ago

I was thinking the same thing. Since when was it dieing?

Omega45762d ago

People aren't buying a lot of games cause they are expensive and a lot of them aren't worth £50.

In a way motion tech could help the industry cause causals buy anything no matter the price, look how many were willing to spend $99 on a balance board. More causal gamers means more money being put into the industry.

cobraagent5762d ago (Edited 5762d ago )

I will agree with you. The best selling Wii game is Wii Sports because you get it with every Wii. Same will happen with Kinect Adventures and maybe with Move Party. Thats what casual gamers buy so i don't think a lot of 3rd party motion controll games will sell that much

SuperStrokey11235762d ago

OMG I was about to say the same thing... im scared... hold me... not you though omega...

Convas5762d ago (Edited 5762d ago )

GASP! Omega ... Omega ... you actually made a point? It's not 2012 yet!? What the hell is going on?!?!

But it's true. It's one of the reasons games that are advertised sell reasonably well. Casuals watching the playoffs saw Red Dead Redeption or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Halo: Reach (Judging by the preorder craze going on) and they say "Oh wow, that looks awesome" or they realize that that's the next step in the series they've been watching their neighbor brag about and play.

So they go out and buy it. Casuals are the sheep of the entire Consumer base. If it looks pretty and sounds reasonably good, they'll lay down the cash. Which is what MS and Sony is hoping for with Kinect and Move.

So yes, it could reinvigorate the industry, but see, then the industry stops catering to us the Core Gamers and starts putting out shovelware crap from the Sheeples. That's what I fear most. And if things work out the way the Big 3 are planning with this Casual stuff, a huge chunk of the market will be dedicated to Casual Games. (Well, we know Sony won't abandon the Hardcore, still not so sure about MS though ...)

Yardie5762d ago

It's kinda like how the new 3d tech might be able to save the movie industry.
And how the mcdonalds fruit bags saved Ronalds ass.
And how the pope is saving little boys.
And how michael vick is saving PETA.
how omega4 is saving N4g from fanboys.
How mayo is saving perfectly good sandwiches.
How wiping before you sh*t is saving time.
How MW2 saved the COD series
how Black ops is going to continue to save the COD series
how 13 year old boys are saving the online community
How Nick Griffin is going to save britain
How Lucus Johnson saved Trina and Owen

Sorry i forgot what my point was, i think it was that motion controls wont really affect the gaming industry, only read the first to lines. i lost my point after that.

Wh15ky5762d ago

"How Lucus Johnson saved Trina and Owen"

LOL!
My favourite one have a funny bubble.

Colonel-Killzone5762d ago

What the hell are they talking about ? The gaming industry is making probably the most money right now. If any industry needs saving it certainly would need to be the Music industry.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio15d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing15d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit15d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing15d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
