Deep Inside Xbox 360 Kinect and Why It's the Future of Microsoft

A in-depth and informative article about Kinect.

0mega45769d ago

Kinect Is marketed the wrong way
and it it will not succeed as a controller replacement
but as a entertainment enhancement

i believe the games which use a controller and kinect for things such as head tracking will be the most successful
the intermediate games will be the most accessible for the majority of xbox gamers

i just hope they don't forget to support the hardcore audience
that the core audience is supported as well as sony is supporting them with move support in hardcore games

Poseidon5769d ago

if this is the future, i want no part of it, i love my controller.

DelbertGrady5769d ago (Edited 5769d ago )

Who said anything about abandoning the controller? Of course they won't do that. Wouldn't make any sense to exclude. Even if some hardcore games have motion support, in one way or another, there will most likely be an option to turn it off and just use your controller.

MS has always implicitly retained the xbox360 controller for those who prefer to use it.

Kinect has been misaligned by the press and the haters as trying to replace the controller. Of course, this thinking is quite ignorant.

While Kinect has the 'ability' to control menus and interactivity, it does not purport to replace anything.
Kinect, in its pure form, ENHANCES the aspects that we are used to, while retaining the familiar.

For precisely that reason, MS has retained the handheld controller as its primary interface, for the 360.

The kinect functionality is an addition to the features of the 360.
It does not seek to 'replace' anything.

It seems there's a lot of haters, fanboys and websites that are missing this crucial point.
What's with that?
Why are people so bitter and negatively one-sided?

corneliuscrust5769d ago

try to bring sense and logic in here commodore, don't you know you'll just get disagrees for it? :(

IdleLeeSiuLung5769d ago

Then why are you here in a "controller free" article trolling if you don't care...?

Casual's will eat Kinect up, that's a given but I would rather stick with my pad and a real game.

"More Kinects are locked in a blue box, a sign warning passersby in all caps, DO NOT OPEN CRITICAL TEST IN PROGRESS. It's a heat test. Kinect has a tiny built-in fan that kicks in on demand in hot environments, when the heat produced by the three sensors and the atmosphere around it mix to create conditions warmer than Microsoft would like."

"Xbox, pause." The Alice in Wonderland keeps playing. "Xbox. PAUSE." Johnny Depp's freaky visage continues flitting around onscreen."

interesting stuff.

You have no idea how much fun I'm going to have with the Natal, if I'm ever on MW2 with a MIC I'll just be shouting XBOX OFF, XBOX OFF... and watching as people start leaving the game because they bought Natal and their XBOX switched off and they have the MICs coming through the TV.

This is too much hype, after 2011 we will not speak about Natal the same way, no core games, little casual support an overall failure... and plus the next XBOX is coming out 2012 from what I can tell.

I suspect the voice recognition software will capture voice samples from the people who will be using it. I can't imagine that it would take commands from anyone else. If it does however, that would be incredibly funny.

DJMarty5769d ago

You need to post a youtube video, so I can laugh at u.

Kinect is retarded

siren5769d ago

Unfortunately, your comment shows a lack of understanding of modern audio software and technology.

One of the things mentioned in the article and utilized by multiple software and hardware products is noise cancellation and also a system which knows what audio is being output by a device so that it does not take the output as input, it cancels that out as well.

Sony even implemented similar technology into the PS3eye. While this technology is not perfect, it would likely be sufficent to solve the scenario you described.

Beyond this scenario, a simple solution to the problem would be to disable voice commands while within the context of an application (game). This would prevent any incoming voices from ordering the system to take an action.

Lastly, as is already known, Kinect requires additional CPU and memory from the system to function. As a result, games like MW2 will not have the Kinect device enabled while the user is playing. As such, it will not be able to handle voice commands.

The last thing that even if none of the above were in effect that would likely prevent your idea from working is that most gamers utilize headsets while playing. In this scenario, your speech is not likely to reach the Kinect device.

The idea of Kinect is nice, but I still don't believe the technology is developed enough from the demos that I've seen. Seems to me that if the environment it won't work, and things randomly happen when they shouldn't. I might be wrong when it comes to the final release models, but as it stands, I don't think it will be great.

DJMarty5769d ago

The Idea of Kinect ain't new, both EyeToy & PSEYE do controller free gaming, voice and body tracking.

I'd rather wait for the Holodeck.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle23d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde30d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy31d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
