Molyneux: Fable 3 Will Not Include Kinect Functionality at Launch

Lionhead boss and Microsoft Game Studios Europe director Peter Molyneux has revealed on the Engadget Show that Fable 3 will not ship with any Kinect functionality, despite past confirmations to the contrary. Joystiq spoke with Molyneux following his appearance on the show and learned that some form of Kinect content is planned post-launch, and that whatever was initially planned to be built into the game just wasn't up to snuff.

What is so funny? Kinect launches in November, Fable launches in October. Fable launching with Kinect functionality would be totally useless.

soxfan20055696d ago

I agree. Release the game the way it's supposed to be played, then add on the gimmicks later.

FURY__UNLEASHED5696d ago

I'm sure Fable III will be great, and have at least an 85 on metacritic, but this is just more proof Kinect is for casual games.

I remember in an interview, someone asked Peter if Fable III will use Kinect, and he replied "Absolutely not!" That says a lot.

Trroy5696d ago

There's absolutely no reason that the Fable III devs couldn't have Kinect devkits for the past year+ and be ready by the time they launch in October.

They didn't want Kinect in the game. They couldn't think of a worthwhile use for it. That's the reason, plain and simple.

this guy has said Kinect is a revolution in gaming

Bigpappy5696d ago (Edited 5696d ago )

kinect is not a controller with buttons like the Move. You can't just slap it into any game. Fable is made to be played with a controller. The quality of this game looks solid. Leaving plugs to and a few things that are there to do if you happen to have Kinect is the best way to go at this point. They are still working on ways to implement Kinect. Every thing Kinect can do has not been fleshed out yet. Kinect will be a work in progress for a few years. It is going to be adding feature every few months after release. This is a new way to play games. They can copy the wii with this. Every thing needs to be stream-lined.

They have it where it works for casuals and navigation. A lot of the Ideas are going to come from 3rd party. But Primsense and others, who have been working with the tech for many years, are also being consulted. They all want this to suceed so they can introduce and push the tech, outside of gaming. Be patient friends. If you don't like the tech, then that is you choice. But you have no idea where this will end up.

He's saying that they had some Kinect abilities but they weren't very good. Did you read the article?

"Joystiq spoke with Molyneux following his appearance on the show and learned that some form of Kinect content may be available post-launch, and that whatever was initially planned to be built into the game just wasn't up to snuff."

I, for one, breathed a sigh of relief when I read this. I'm a huge fan of the Fable series and the last thing I wanted to see was Fable 3 become a marketing tool for some casual game camera that I'll never buy. I think it's great that Fable 3 isn't going to be Kinect centric. If they want to throw in a couple of minigames or something later, knock yourself out, but I'm glad Kinect isn't going to be involved in one of my favorite series.

On a side note, could you imagine how pissed Halo fans would be if Reach was Kinect centered? There'd be blood in the streets. One of my biggest concerns in the leadup to Kinect's launch was that Microsoft would be forcing us to play Kinect Gears of War, or Kinect Halo. I'm glad to see that it's just party games for kids and Microsoft is leaving the other 99.8% of Xbox 360 owners the hell alone. The worst thing they could have done was alienated their base by forcing Kinect on them.

Where's omega to tell us how Kinect is not being tacked on?

"And people think I'm lying when I say that all "optional" Move controls are tacked on *sigh*" - Omega4

Cevapi885696d ago

i hope im not the only one who actually thinks this is a good thing...better to work on the core gameplay than rush the game by implementing kinect functionality...as the article said...it can wait after post-launch...who knows what Molyneux will do...something along the lines of Milo but with your dog..idk just speculation on my part

PandemicPrawn05696d ago

Hey!

A voice-controlled dog might be pretty cool.

“Sic em Rex, sic em”

“Where’s the silver key? Where is it? You go find it.”

“No Rex! Leave it…LEAVE IT!”

“GET IN BEHIND YA BLOODY MONGREL!”

bubbles for the Hilarity of Rex XD

NewZealander5696d ago

i agree fable 3 is better off without motion control, i guess you cant win when people dont want kinect for hardcore games, yet everyone moans because its not aimed at the hardcore.

personally for me kinect is a great reason to get up and play games with my nieces and friends, i dont need it for games like fable or gears.

PandemicPrawn05696d ago (Edited 5696d ago )

Fable 3 is still going to be a great game regardless of weather or not it will support Kinect.

Better to leave out whatever they were going to do for now, and roll it out via DLC or the inevitable Game of the year edition.

Nobody wants to see broken motion controls shoehorned into a great game like Fable.

Fable II - A Fantasy Series at Peak Performance

Fable II launched back in 2008 and remains the best the series has offered. Ahead of the series comeback, it's time to look at the classic.

Crows90991d ago

They gotta bring back those gargoyles!

Dudeson991d ago

I'd love to play it again, this time on pc though. Forever waiting on that pc port.

GaboonViper991d ago

Loved this game, oh and i always saved my dog at the end, hope the new Fable has a animal companion.

got_dam991d ago

Fable 2 was the best inthe series. Peter waaaaaaay over promised with fable 1 and it was good but disappointing. He didn't go crazy eith hype for the second game and it was surprisingly awesome. Then he ran his mouth promoting 3 and it was the worst of the 3.

cthulhucultist990d ago

Funny story: Fable 3 had a funny way of keeping the promises you made in the first half of the game and having enough money to defeat the darkness.

You only had to collect enough money to buy 2 stores in a busy market district. You then raise the prices to maximum and you turn xbox 360 internal clock 99 or more years ahead.

The next time you load the game, all the rents from the 99 years are collected immediately.

But yes I agree that 3 was the weakest of the three.

Demetrius990d ago

I only got to play it once 😩 I'm so tempted to buy a Xbox 360 slim but planning on getting the series x soon since I got a PS5 in February Im ready to get saints row 1&2 back, GTA 4, fable 2, but I also want to play infamous 1&2 again Sony screwed us over with the stream only for saints row 2 and other gems smh
