I could let PS3 share its BD drive out to the PC without having to tear our the drive from the PS3.

I want these guys to allow the PS3 HDD to be recognised so that the PS3 HDD file can be copied to another PS3 HDD. I want the data off my YLOD's ps3 so I can copy it to my slim.

DJMarty5736d ago (Edited 5736d ago )

PS3 Hard drives are encrypted and matched to PS3 hardware. So it will never work. Try inserting a hard drive in another PS3 and you will see what I mean. First thing it will do is 'format it'.

DJMarty5736d ago

Why not DIY fix your YLOD PS3, then use the transfer data feature to get your data to your Slim.

If your system is dead anyways, then you have nothing to lose you when you crack it open for a repair attempt.

which I messed up fixing the 3rd time (3rd time's a charm my ass!) lying dead in my office. I would love to reuse some of the usable components like the BD drive. I think I might wanna try this. might as well save me a fortune as I don't have to buy new BD drive for my pc if I want to

edit: no guides on how to do it whatsoever! bummer

Interesting development this.

If they could manage to dump the PS3 drives firmware and do similar development on the firmware reading backups as the hackers did with the 360 DVD drive firmware, then it would be a huge step for the hacking community.

But then again, the BluRay drive firmware and chipset is totally different to DVD drives, thus it remains to be seen if, how and when this can be realized. But then again, its easier probably than a full softmod solution for the PS3. BluRay discs have become pretty cheap over time and BluRay burners also aren't as expensive as they used to, so interest will rise for being able to play backups on the PS3 I guess. The days that BluRay discs were 20, 30 or 40 bucks it wasn't logical at all to burn instead of buy originals.

DJMarty5736d ago

The PS3's Blu-ray drives firmware is encrypted, so I doubt this will help hackers.

BTW why you condoning piracy. I don't want PS3 to go the way of PC/PS2/360/Wii/PSP. It only harms the gaming industry in the long run.

@TheMART at Xboxkings
wow you still a live ??

yewles15736d ago

He knows all those fresh profits Sony have finally been receiving will be the last time the company see them the moment PS3 games become pirated. Think about it...

nix5736d ago

i swear... but did we even miss him?

bikar5736d ago

bl drive firmware isn`t only protection on ps3
hackers are not even close to hacking ps3
and that is good thing

silvacrest5736d ago

not really

blu ray burners are still expensive
blu ray discs are still expensive in comparison to DVD
and the biggest hurdle of them all? downloading blu ray games will take forever on a average broadband connection, even with games that dont use the entire disc, sony can just fill the rest with dummy files, a 50GB blu ray could contain 10GB worth of game and the other 40 is junk

piracy becomes popular when its free/cheap and convenient, with the PS3 non of this will be the case if its ever pirated, you might as well buy the game and save yourself the hassle

nickjkl5736d ago

insert disc

open disc files

take files you want

merge files encode files

upload to internets

silvacrest5736d ago

lets assume that it is that simple and there are no issues like corruption or data loss while doing this

my other points are still there

CynicalVision5736d ago

Hopefully this is as far as it'll go, I just wish hackers would piss off and stay away from the PS3, they're ruining it for the rest of us.

RIP Linux.

Redempteur5736d ago

geohot wish of (even more ) fame caused this ...

RIP LInux.

every other hack group would know to not disclose proof of concept until you can do something about it ...but this stupid guys didn't know even that
