Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Tech Interview - Digital Foundry

DF: "Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit represents a big departure for Criterion. This is no mere re-skin of Burnout Paradise - the development team has created a brand new engine for the game, with a different driving experience and a new graphical look far removed from their previous title. It's Need for Speed, but more than that, it's classic Need for Speed, brought up to date for the high-definition era with state-of-the-art rendering and physics.

We'll be talking in more depth about the game soon, and revealing some surprise information on the creation process, but in the mean time, it's transcript publication time: Fry, Parr and Leadbetter in the Criterion war room. This is what happened."

Awesome Interview Criterion are a great developer

"Digital Foundry: Are you still sticking to the Burnout Paradise philosophy of the same code being run on every platform? Did you see the presentation Bizarre Creations made on how they moved lighting across from GPU to SPU for Blur on PS3?

Alex Fry: That kind of thing is quite radical, yeah. If you start to dump GPU tasks onto your CPU that's when it starts to get a bit...

Digital Foundry: Lairy?

Alex Fry: Yeah. It's really good that people do different things because you can learn a lot from it. I like seeing people trying different stuff. But no, our deferred rendering is still done on GPU on all platforms. We aren't putting anything back on CPU. We could and see how we go, but a simple architecture is simple - you can change it and it's easy. Well... easier. As soon as diverge from that, things get a lot more complicated. It's something you might choose to do if it's a decision you take early on. We chose not to do that and we've not paid for it."

Taking the easy way eh? you're not getting my money that's for sure.

I have to agree with you, there are benefits to keeping something so simple and a "chameleon" engine, but then the bad side is its not pushing any boundaries, its also technically not going to push any of the platforms or do any of them any favours.

Maybe it will give the low end gpu users a decent chance of a nice framerate, and in turn make them the most money.

I'm really looking forward to playing this game :)

Interesting read as well, interesting to hear that they use deffered rendering. I do hope they get to smooth out the cars really well with AA.
Good thing that the game will look identical on all platforms (well, on both consoles), so it doesn't start a war :=)

A few of us were chatting about what would we do... what could we do if we used next-gen hardware at standard-def. What could we do? Interesting question. Lighting and quality of shaders and overall image quality that you get counts more than raw resolution or poly count.

how come i never thought of that one imagine if the ps3 didnt go HD and kept i HD do you know how much stuff would be going on screen

NFS and Criterion is a match made in heaven.

My favorite need for speed titles where:

Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
Need for Speed: Highstakes
Need for Speed: Underground 1 & 2
Need for Speed: Most Wanted

Best news for NFS fans is when Criterion came on board! As an avid player back on the 3DO, I hope some of that..."feel" returns. Tech wise there's no doubt this will look stunning across the board and more importantly across ALL platforms!

Looking Back to Two of Need for Speed's Best Games - Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit

Paul writes - "EA know a good thing when they see it, and for multiple years November was Need for Speed month. In a break from the usual routine, I'm going to be looking back at two games here, released in 2005 and 2010 respectively. The earlier game is Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which has the distinction of being one of the very best in the franchise. The second game comes from 2010, and is Need for Speed Hot Pursuit; which I'll talk about just as the Remastered version of the game has hit the stores."

Hotpursuit 2 was good as well.

I completely adore this game! In fact its probably my favorite racing game. I recently dusted off my xbox 360 to play Most Wanted 2005. Still a great game, though I do not remember there being such horrible performance. Like massive frame-pacing issues. screen tearing, latency. If any game ever truly needed to be remastered, it this one for sure!

Uuuu, I loved this one. I want it.

LucasRuinedChildhood2062d ago

No NFS released since Hot Pursuit (2010) has came close. The Ghost Games NFS games were just dreadful (to me they were anyway, 2015 was okay I suppose). Would love to replay this and I hope it has an update for next-gen as well.

DarkZane2062d ago (Edited 2062d ago )

I loved Most Wanted as well (on PS3, I think it released in 2012). After that, it has gone downhill, but the latest games are slowly coming back up. I loved NFS Heat, but it needs to get better before it comes back to same level as NFS Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted.

Then again, NFS Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted were likely better because they were from Criterion (in fact, those were the last 2 games from criterion in nfs series).

LucasRuinedChildhood2062d ago

@DarkZane
complete agree. Most Wanted was good fun as well.

boing12062d ago

Yeah, Criterion has made two best NFS games in my opinion.

georeo2062d ago

Oh yes! They cops vs the drivers online was a blast.

LucasRuinedChildhood2062d ago

Better be 60FPS unlike the original console ports.

Sgt_Slaughter2062d ago

I would be excited but NFS is basically dead in the water at this point, a shell of its former self.
