Can Kinect Compete?

IGN:

Now that Microsoft has finally planted its flag in the sand by releasing the pricing of Kinect, we were keen to find out what it had to offer for £129.99. This coming festive season will be a keenly fought battle of the motion sensors, but how does Kinect compare to Move and Wii?

Move : - Gamers : Very accurate/responsive, lots of hardcore titles ( SOCOM 4, RUSE, Killzone 3, LBP 2, Heavy Rain, Resident Evil 5 ... ).
- Casuals : Sony is known for its good casual titles like Singstar, EyeToy or Buzz, so the casual audience knows Sony.
- Price : Not exepensive.

Kinect : - Gamers : Lag, no hardcore titles.
- Casuals : Xbox isn't a brand known for its casual games, no interest from the casual audience ( You're in the Movie and Lips bombed ).
- Price : Too expensive.

=> Kinect can't compete.

"....both Sony and Microsoft still have a long way to go to catch up, but so far Kinect seems like the lame donkey in the race.'

Lets look at it from a platform perspective.

Sony has sixaxis for move to compete with. Considering move looks to be getting more support unlike sixaxis, I say move is the clear winner.

Wii has the wiimote and there are a few third parties that make motion controls to compete with wiimote. I dont know about those but I would say the official wiimote wins on that platform.

360 is getting the kinect camera and if you really want to get technical, the live vision cam is the only competition to that and kinect beats it easy. So yes, kinect can compete.

I have shown you the competitors on each platform and listed the likely winner in each. Each platform has/will have games for everybody to play. It is a matter of preference as not everyone will like the same game as the next person.

Just FYI, I chose to pit each system against itself as that is the right way to compare the individual platforms.

Can't all those hardcore titles be played without Move? I'm sure Move will enhance them, but to me, it isn't worth the price of the Move controller, camera and navigation controller to play those games with motion controls- maybe down the line when there are lots more games like that though.

I think Kinect will sell better than Move, at the very least it can compete sales wise. Gaming wise- I'm not sure yet, controller free gaming could take off and we could end up with some amazing new genres, if not, they could just release a Wii style controller like the Move and just go along with Nintendo and Sony.

Kudos to Microsoft for at least trying something which might actually revolutionize gaming, but probably won't.

ActionBastard5774d ago

Those kudos should have been extended to Sony...in 2003.

cliffbo5774d ago

i agree, and we will never let them forget

timmyrulz5774d ago

You all on here like to play games right? well i have a great one, it runs at a solid 60fps and its 1080p

Its called - 24 starring all N4G members and the main aim is to go 24 hours without posting a kinect is doomed/fail article.

You get a platinum trophy or 1000gp

Kinect is one of the biggest jokes in gaming, and it deserves to get some negative attention.

People need to know just how $hitty Kinect really is, so they dont support this garbage, then maybe Microsoft will be forced to actually start making games for the people that already bought a 360, instead of all the Wii fans that dont own a 360.

Kinect needs to fail. Microsoft does not have enough talent to produce Casual titles without sacrificing the quality of their Hardcore games. The 360 was already starting to lag behind, now that Microsoft is in the process of abandoning what it did well, what do you think is going to happen?

"Joy Ride – a cartoony kart-racer - was surprisingly difficult to control, and most of the seasoned gaming journos spent half the time spinning off the track. Waving your limbs around in front of a screen, regardless of how simplified the game is, isn't an intuitive control system. "

Says it all really.. Certain games cannot be done with Kinect limiting it compared to move and wii.

"As it stands, PlayStation's Move looks a much more accessible piece of hardware and the tech demos we've seen blew Kinect's flailing displays out of the water"

ChickeyCantor5774d ago

"- Price : Not exepensive. "
Perhaps your wallet will swallow anything that Sony offers.
But for others it could be just that: Expensive.

AK465774d ago

Stop whining and get yourself a job, or start putting away some of your allowance money you get from your parents every week.

ChickeyCantor5774d ago (Edited 5774d ago )

Even if you have a job, that doesn't mean you can just buy stuff like this.

Since you sound so ignorant, its all ironic.

I wasn't speaking for myself.

AK465774d ago

Now your speaking for gamers that can't afford $50 for a PS Move and why can't I buy stuff like this If I'm a gamer?

The tech can't compete with Move because it's so buggy and still needs a lot of polish and some decent games, but it could still outsell Move.

Chaostar5774d ago

If Kinect does initially outsell Move, which it probably will, does that make it better? Does it somehow make the hardware less "buggy"? The software more "polished"?

What it does achieve is a chance for microsoft to justify their investment then either exit or adapt i.e ditch the tech PSeye style or create a Move-like peripheral to make it work.

cliffbo5774d ago

he's right guys. don't get bent out of shape with his comment. hype beats reality sometimes. a lot of games prove that

ThePlaystationFour5774d ago

Gimme a Hell Yea!! If your getting ready to move it!!

Wizziokid5774d ago

Move does look like the best out of the 3 because it's least buggy etc but I'm still going to pass on both, motion controls aren't exciting they just get boring after a week and you go back to the controller.

Omega45774d ago (Edited 5774d ago )

Its already got bucket loads of preorders in the UK and its likely the same in the rest of the world especially in the US. So it will easily outsell Move and be a worthy competitor to the declining Wii.

MS will attract the causals for certain as for Move it will only get current owners buying and that won't even be at launch since its launch titles are extremely weak.

@Poseidon
no, I just come onto a GAME website for the sake of it..... >_>

Edit: If you got nothing to say about the comment I made then don't reply to me, cause your random comments are getting real old now.

BornToKill5774d ago

he likes to google microsoft sales in his spare time.

Hades13375774d ago

You can't criticise this guy for being a fanboy and then ignore the other fanboys in this section. I defend the 360 and Kinect a lot even though I'm a neutral in the console wars, because the bias and hypocrisy on this website is almost untenable.

secksi-killer5774d ago

have a bubble, because if you dont start towing the sony fanturd line, you wont have any!!

well said

Cratos87805774d ago (Edited 5774d ago )

plays sales not games.

@Omega4

Many existing games are getting patched to support Move for free like Heavy Rain, LittleBigPlanet 1, RE5:Gold, Flower, Pain and maybe few others.

5774d ago
Wh15ky5774d ago

"no, I just come onto a GAME website for the sake of it..... >_>"

Or because Microsoft pay you to.

AllroundGamer5774d ago (Edited 5774d ago )

the funny thing is, even if MS would pay him, he is doing a pretty bad job to advertise MS products in a good way, cause people will start hating MS even more when they read his comments and some other payed MS leg humpers on N4G :)

Triella5774d ago (Edited 5774d ago )

Preorders means nothing because preorders can be canceled. It could be fanboys like you showing virtual support, or even more evil, it could all be MS marketing strategy : false accounts preordering bucket loads of Kinect and then reporting the skyrocketing preorders on complacent blogs to hype the product.

peeps5774d ago

Well here's an intelligent response (if i do say so myself):

The 'mainstream' media i.e. Talk shows, news programs etc still talk about kinect as if it does everything we presumed it would do when announced wheres the more game focuesed sites such as IGN, Gamespot, Eurogamer etc etc are now starting to realise that at least in the launch line up, kinect isn't this impressive product we were hoping for.

What this may mean is that the casual gamer who doesn't visit gaming sites is still excited about kinect and therefore will be willing to pay £130. They may lose a few sales because even to casuals the launch line up may appear rather poor.

And then at the other end, the hardcore. I'm struggling to see what the 'hardcore' see in kinect at this stage. I say at this stage because perhaps in the future it will be a worthwhile investment but right now i don't believe it has the line up a lot of 'gamers' would be after.

Perhaps the hardcore who just love new tech will buy it at launch but for someone like myself i was interested but not anymore, at least not at release.

PlayStation Move Controller Used to Perform Surgery on a Pig That Was 5,780 Miles Away

A group of surgeons made headlines after they managed to perform an endoscopic procedure on a pig located in Hong Kong by using PlayStation controllers. It involved the use of a PS5 DualSense controller as well as a PlayStation Move controller.

jznrpg583d ago

There is at least a few good jokes that could come from that title

Cacabunga582d ago

Yet another powerful device Sony gave up supporting. KZ3 move was one of the best motion controller implementation ever

just_looken582d ago

Right the ps move was awesome i have the gun thing from killzone still.

Relientk77583d ago

That's really cool. It's crazy something like that is possible with gaming controllers 1000's of miles away.

Lexreborn2583d ago

Guess that submarine should’ve used move controllers instead of logitech
