Frame rate a challenge with 3D - Peter Moore

computerandvideogames.com -

President of EA Sports Peter Moore has talked about some of the tech challenges with 3D - and pointed at frame rate and camera angles as two areas to watch.

In an interview with CVG sister mag Xbox World 360, Moore was asked about his thoughts on 3D - and pointed out a couple of stumbling blocks for the burgeoning new tech.

"We're certainly looking at 3D; there are some tech challenges - frame rates being one," he said.

and then Gorilla goes and proves them wrong... again

ExplosionSauce5767d ago

Yeah, they're pretty good at what they do. I'm sure the 3D experience will be smooth enough.

Killzone 3 is gonna run in 60fps in 2d?

jerethdagryphon5767d ago

yes and no.

3d effects either anyglyph or other put a tremendous strain on machines.

effectivly there having to out put 3 images for each frame main red and blue

ive been fooling around with anaygyph on my pc which is quite capable running 4gig ram quad core at 3.2 and a 5770

running a game like mirrors edge, i get 60+ fps standard at max graphical settings switching the anaglyph on i drop to 35-42 fps still perfectly playable but most assuredly a noticable drop

if the 3d game were simpler and or the additional processing couold be offloaded fully to the spus without taking up recources from the rest of the system then these drops could be reduced.
adn before anyone says thats not how ps3 does it.

all 3d is done in a very similar manner anagyph is the most resource intensive but others are close using aditional systems to offload and process the 3d streams is possible ie coprocessors perhaps in a tv or something but as far as i know that not being used currently

The Lazy One5767d ago

how would that be proving them wrong? Just because they do it doesn't mean it's not challenging.

Or did you not read the quotes?

DelbertGrady5766d ago

According to this test Killzone 3 looks like crap in 3D. I don't know in what way they are proving anyone wrong.

Chris_TC5766d ago

You're getting all these disagrees because the journalist who was sent a preview version and actually PLAYED it has no clue. The N4G fan crowd however does have a clue.

RadientFlux5766d ago

I've heard the same thing and from different sources, and it's to be expected, both the PS3 and X360 only have so much RAM.

Though in the end it doesn't really effect, as I have no plans on buying a 3D TV in the next few years. So my Killzone 3 experience will be 2D based.

onanie5766d ago

Challenging, perhaps, but should never be attempted?

I think Guerilla should be given a ton of credit for pushing the boundaries of perception.

Its through challenges that create progress which allows us to grow and evolve. If developers never challenged them selves we would still be playing 8 bit graphics.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

karl5767d ago

since the interview was from a xbox360 magazine.. its obvious that there is going to be frame rate problems

TheTeam065767d ago

Sony said this a few weeks ago. That's why they recommended 720p.

Speaking of EA..... WHY DID YOU REMOVE THE SPRINT BUTTON IN MADDEN???

ARGH!

ECM0NEY5767d ago

Speaking of Madden... WHY ARE YOU STILL PLAYING MADDEN!!!

TheTeam065766d ago

True that. I'm moving on.

NCAA?

lzim5767d ago (Edited 5767d ago )

720p isn't a recommendation, it is a limitation of current console tech. Having made noise about 3D sony at least saves face by acknowledging it as a limitation by making it a policy. That said some 3D games may appear in less than 720p to achieve acceptable frame rates.

For PS3 it is a hamstring, for 360 it was purely intentional (the sweetspot). Unlike Sony though Microsoft doesn't give a shit about 3D and won't even talk about policy regarding 3D, besides saying their hardware supports 3D.

we need a new class of consoles that can do 1080p at 60+ frames per second, and a cable that can connect those consoles (hdmi 1.4 or displayport 1.2 etc), but they'll hit limitations soon too unless they are designed for even more bandwidth for higher resolutions and better frame rates. 3D on Apple's iMacs resolution or better at 120+ frames per second. Multiple ports would be a good plan.

karl5767d ago

what makes u think a new console would fix framerate problems?

yeah.. a more powerful console would run todays 3d games at full 1080p in 3d
but also the ps3 could today run ps2 games a full 1080 in 3d if they wanted to

my point is that a more powerful hardware would lead to better graphics and to get even more graphics they would start to drop the framerate again...

soo.... there is really no solution to that...

yewles15766d ago

Hamstring? So saying rendering 1280 x 1470 @ 120fps is not enough? 1920 x 2220 @ 48fps is a bit much even on top notch rigs. Things have to start SOMEWHERE just to get the ball rolling.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle14d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga22d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199222d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga22d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman22d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box22d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion22d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7222d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7522d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit22d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14922d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7722d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
