PS3 helps put Sony back in black

GameSpot: Electronics maker posts $295.2 million profit thanks in part to rising demand for console; game division revenue up 32 percent, but exchanges rates keep game unit from profitability

After a year which saw a steady drumbeat of quarterly losses, Sony is back in the black. Today, the electronics giant reported profits of 25.7 billion yen ($295.2 million) for the April-June quarter, up from a 37.1 billion yen ($426.7 million) loss the year prior. Overall earnings were 1.66 trillion yen ($190.9 billion), up from 1.56 trillion yen ($179.4 billion) the year prior.

I was gonna use the Black To Black album cover but thought all those uneducated music listeners would report it as "not game related"

thats more than many countries GDP!!!

all these giants makes trillions of USD in a decade and when a financial meltdown occurs they act as if their trillions vanished because they lost only 50-100 billion USD!!

this applied on all giant companies!!!

The PS3 increase year over year increased by over one million.

Gamespot says "During the quarter, 2.4 million PS3s worldwide were sold, an increase of 200,000 units from the year prior."

Look at Sony's site. http://www.sony.net/SonyInf...

The same quarter last year saw PS3 sales of 1.1 million. Now it's 2.4 million.

2.4 million minus 1.1 million is not 200,000 consoles.

The sad thing is there was an article submitted last night that had the correct information, but it was killed other by users who falsely reported it as a duplicate. The mods ignored it.

http://n4g.com/news/573064/...

I guess being first and having the correct information doesn't count for much if you're a small site trying to post on N4G. We're subjected to flamebait articles from no-name sites on a daily basis but real, accurate news doesn't cut it? Expect your articles to be repressed in favor of larger sites with the wrong info. Sad.

PlayStation is brand is the Godzilla of consoles!
Indestructible brand!
Don't make it angry or else... http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Sony should start publishing and localize the JRPGs that crappy publishers like Namco don't bother to, localize.

Don't even need English voices. People will buy.

himdeel5784d ago

...and I'd purchase them in a heartbeat. Oh and an online instructions manual in english would be cool. I can print it off if I needed to.

HorsePowerr5784d ago

PS3 is awesome now. Simple as that.

Commander_TK5784d ago

is great, PC gaming is the ultimate experience. Don´t forget Steam

Chimerhazzard5784d ago (Edited 5784d ago )

LOL, sorry but no.

The current state of PC gaming was what lead me to buying my PS3 on the first place. Don't get me wrong, I used to be a devote PC gamer but I was feeling I was starting to miss out on too much games, games that used to be "multiplataform" and released on both the consoles and PC but that more and more started to be "console only". Red Dead Redemption is a good example of this, altough I still hope there will be a PC version, which in case there is, I will promptly buy.

While I agree that a PC provides a gaming environment better than the consoles do for some types of games (this is particulary true for FPS or third person shooters) there is NO way that PC gaming is "the ultimate experience". There are just too many good games on PS3 for a real gamer to just keep using a PC.

The Xbox360 has some very good games too, specially the Mass Effect series, but fortunately you can play most of those in a PC.

Commander_TK5784d ago

Also, if u only game on PS3, you´ll miss out tons of great PC exclusives also. Don´t that the PC is the platform with the most exclusives

Chimerhazzard5784d ago (Edited 5784d ago )

I still have my PC... well I game on 2 PCs actually, so I get he best of both worlds. I just don't think that is fair to call the PC "the ultimate experience", because gaming in consoles is just as good. I do not mean to imply that PC no longer has good exclusives, it still does. Look at Starcraft 2 for instance. But consoles tended to have a bigger flux of good games for the past few years... Good games like starcraft 2 come to the PC's once in a while... I am getting great console games like Heavy Rain, GOd of War 3, Uncharted 2 and Red Dead like every month... there's so many new games that I can't afford the time to play them all :D

But I agree with you, PC still has great exclusives, and many of them free. Like Alien Swarm. I love that game.

djfullshred5784d ago

I think it depends on your PC if it is the "ultimate experience".

Mine is definately not the ulitmate gaming machine. And too many good games are not even being made for PC. So even if I had a kick ass rig, I would not consider it "ultimate" when many of the games I want to play are not made for PC.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle31d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga40d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199239d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga39d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman39d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box40d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion39d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7240d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7539d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit39d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14940d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7740d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
