Hollywood Blues

With audiences increasingly fragmented, N'Gai Croal fears the games industry may not survive another hardware transition.

"The question that’s been on my mind lately is this: can the videogame industry survive another transition? With every announcement of yet another studio closure or yet another round of layoffs, it becomes increasingly clear that the fundamentals of this sector are not as strong as they once were..."

good piece.

i honestly don't understand how this industry survives in a constant state of near bankruptcy. by the time they finally turn a profit on their current machine, oops here comes next gen.

i think companies are seeing things that simply aren't there, they've been so quick to rush out new consoles, but nobody is clamoring for them. except for a few nutters, i think most people would be happy with what they've already got for another couple years. i'm glad there isn't another console out yet, manufacturers need this to be an extended, chill the eff out gen because they won't survive another gen filled with the massive financial losses of this one. publishers and devs certainly can't afford more losses.

they truly need to sit back, take stock and decide what direction the industry should go in.

Microsoft has a lot of money, so they're going to keep forcing it. Sony ends up making money at the end. Nintendo is making money and I'd argue it's too much for their own good.

The gaming industry will easily survive because game sales are really good, and they could easily raise the price to $69.99 for the next generation. Sure, people are going to complain about the price just like how we did with $59.99 this generation. The reality is we don't pay that much for this gaming hobby as compared to going to the movies every week(popcorn, drink, dinner). Console gaming is bang for your buck. The tools to make the game development process will also get better.

It's not like us gamers will find another avenue of entertainment. I'm not going to start reading books, going to the movies, go clubbing, and buying music regularly. I'm going to buy the next PlayStation and Xbox no matter how much they cost.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
