New PlayStation Plus Feature: Back Up for Save Data?

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ) conducted a survey asking what Japanese gamers wanted from the PlayStation Plus service.

Is that shit even remotely possible?

ActionBastard5808d ago (Edited 5808d ago )

I think so, we're talking save data (relatively small) and not the installed game data. At least technically it should be possible. Trophy data syncs, why not saved data?

wicked5808d ago

Save data size depends on the game, I think Dragon Age is like 2meg a save (one of the bigger ones). So uploading a lot of save data could take while.

MightyMark4275808d ago

Anything is possible with Sony... but yea, Action Bastard is right, if the trophy data can sync, why not save data? It's a pretty neat idea though! No need to worry about data loss!

Digitaldude5808d ago

Course its possible! Saves aren't terribly big, just have a set space for each plus user.

Great idea, I'd experienced multiple PS3 failure and losing all my saves twice is a huge pain, if it wasn't for trophies it would be even worse but we shouldn't need to back it up all the time.

Spenok5808d ago

Easily, and i sure hope they bring this to light.

kneon5808d ago

It's just data, of course it's possible. We've been asking for this for a while and I was expecting it would be part of Plus. I would have signed up immediately if it was even though I usually do weekly backups. Though I never needed to use them except when upgrading drives.

But I also want the data accessible from any PS3 I sign into so that it doesn't matter which one I use, I can still continue playing from where I left off.

firelogic5807d ago

Yeah it's possible. Steam does it right now. You can play a game on any pc, save to the steam cloud, then go to another pc with steam installed and continue where you left off.

I hope Sony lets us backup locked saves

30sec5808d ago

It would be backed up on Sony servers, probably locked to your PSN ID, so I don;t see why not. Here's to hoping!

MightyMark4275808d ago

well if it's done through the server yea.. but copy to memory stick? doubt it

DelbertGrady5808d ago (Edited 5808d ago )

Can't you just copy them to a USB stick?

@30sec - Not that I can think of, no. This would be a useful feature for both PSN and Xbox Live. I back up the game saves I care the most about that way, that's why I asked.

Millionaire5808d ago

Well you can...but it's better if you don't need to do that every week or month or something...Convenience you know...

Optical_Matrix5808d ago

You can Soda, but for reasons I think to do with people cheating to get trophies, a lot of saved data is locked by the devs so that it can't be copied to a HDD or USB stick unless you do full system back up. All of Capcom's games (at least the ones I have) are locked in this way.

Man In Black5808d ago

They do it so they can justify selling dlc which unlocks everything in the game.

30sec5808d ago

Yes manually or to an external Fat32 formatted partition/harddrive via the backup utility. Is there some sort of problem with online backups you are trying to bring to the forefront?

TheTeam065808d ago

That would block your Trophy progress, but yeah, you can just do that.

Newtype5808d ago

Wow, this would be awesome. I don't have to worry about my HDD crashing on me.

Alos885808d ago

That shouldn't be a feature you pay extra for, it's too important.

darkdoom30005808d ago

Cloud servers cost money.
Someone has to cover the cost.

Alos885808d ago

I just don't get what cloud servers are exactly, or why they are so revolutionary.

darkdoom30005808d ago

From my understanding, they're just severs on the internets.

Instead of saving/loading the save file on the Ps3, it would just do it from the internet sever. if your PS3 dies, it wont matter, because your saves are on the internet server.

also useful if you have multiple ps3s, you won't have to constantly copy save files across the ps3s.

kneon5807d ago

Cloud is just the latest term for network based computing services. It really just means that the servers are remote from your location and can be accessed via the internet. Nothing special really.

Rolling the Dice: Do Modern RPGs Miss the Point of Team-Based Play?

It seems it was long time ago. A bunch of friends spending hours on end playing RPG games, sitting around the table with the box of cold pizza. Excited about the story, listening to the Game Master, they were completely engaged in the worlds only visible to them and their imaginations.

The GM is the programmer, and in MMOs and co-ops, you can play with others. If you want to ONLY use your imagination for the visuals, read a book.

1) Hope they put it on disc this time.
2) Hope this is a positive for Neptune coming over as well.

Demons Souls5858d ago

If so, that's being developed & published by Idea Factory. Compile Heart has nothing to do with it (Thank God for that).

Godmars2905858d ago (Edited 5858d ago )

Thought Compile Heart was one of the companies lending characters.

Was also speaking in general as in regards to a US of Neptune. If these guys are offing a second game, NIS or Atlus, both of whom offer quirkier titles, will put that one out.

@kagon01:
My issue isn't - wholly - with the DL-only option, but the price. The first game should be $30. Maybe $40, and by that I mean $39.99. The only reason its $45 is the 360 disc version which has extras. Nevermind that by all rights its a PS2 game. Something that proabbly could have been done if the devs had the GOW2 engine or tools.

ClownBelt5858d ago

I approve of this god damn message.

Could have gotten my 60 bucks if they just put it on a disc.

Jack-Pyro5858d ago

Is this a half decent SRPG, porn aside, cause if it is, i might just decide to go and buy it for the 360.

Anon73495858d ago

There's no porn just some sexual innuendos but that's it.

Also it is a great game by itself, maybe not graphically but everything else is top tier.

RedDevils5858d ago

so it had some kind of "top tier" porn story jk

ThanatosDMC5858d ago

Yup, it's a decent game. I just hate that a move has to go first before any attack options.
