Arkham Asylum 2 using Unreal Engine

Rocksteady Games will use Epic's Unreal Engine to create Arkham Asylum 2 - just as it did with the title's acclaimed predecessor.

That's according to a new job ad for a senior programmer on the Warner-published game, which tells candidates that experience with the toolset is 'an advantage'.

The first one had some really nice visuals.

Stuart57565694d ago

Correct, there is nothing wrong with Unreal Engine and Rocksteady seem to have a firm grasp on it. Arkham Asylum was fantastic!

Its a dated engine even by my standard (which compared to todays GPUs is very low). Hardware marketed as next gen however, has a problem running any intensive game based on this engine in anything beyond 720p.

This game will be so good, especially with PhysX again

starchild5694d ago

You are right, it did look fantastic. The Unreal engine is a great engine that is constantly being updated.

The newest version has massively improved the lighting model and foliage rendering. You can see the new dynamic lighting engine in upcoming games like Enslaved, Bulletstorm and Gears of War 3.

When you combine amazing textures with dynamic lighting and all the other great features of Unreal 3 engine you have one of the most powerful and flexible engines in gaming today.

KZ2 engine?.. Oh thats right..

OSU_Gamer5694d ago

I just saw a small demo of Bulletstorm with Cliffy B. It looks absolutely fantastic and it was using the Unreal Engine. There isn't anything wrong with it.

TheXgamerLive5694d ago

the only people who put this game down visually are sony ps3 fans, it's that whole X vs P thing in their minds. Let it go, this title i'm sure will look and play ever better than the first. Enjoy it:)

I think rocksteady used the engine better than epic did.

Paradicia5694d ago

Have you seen Gears of War 3 or Bulletstorm?

I guess not...

tinybigman5694d ago

At the Batman looked better than Gears 1&2. I would expect Gears to look better now since its the 3rd one. I fully expect major upgrades for Batman 2.

As for bulletstorm even though the game looks fun, it still looks like gears of war.

gypsygib5694d ago

I agree, Batman AA looked better than Gears 1 and 2, probably not 3 though.

Bulletstorm's graphics are pretty bad compared to the other games comming out in the next 6 months.

Cock4Gamers5694d ago

Don't use the KZ2 engine. I want this game to run at more than just 15 fps the whole time!
On Topic: The first one was great visually, so this one will probably be great looking too. Can't wait to play it and kick some ssa!

Unreal was the first next gen engine and it continues to dominate the gaming community because of it's constant upgrades and easy to use applications...just look at this clip here from the underrated Batman: Arkham Asylum...

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Epic has really hit a home run with the tech and numerous games have utilized the tech...lets take a look. First up the latest tech for jungle like terrain...

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Of course tech demo's are no good without real time applications...here's some here...Bulletstorm...

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Bulletstorm is a Unreal FPS. Check out this Unreal FPS that has redefined FPS controls, some of which can be found in Bulletstorm and a game called Brink...Mirrors Edge and Unreal breaking new ground this gen...watch for the hands, knee's and torso...

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Who can forget Gears of War...Gears introduced the next gen gamer to next gen graphics, Gears 3 once again raising the bar with unmatchable brutality in any game on any system...Gears of War 3...

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

In game rubbery, life like graphics, great AI and awesome physics unmatched by any game. That's why Ubisoft, Capcom and Square Enix among others have paid for licences to the tech.

Add to this list MOH, a MW2 clone...Unreal can do it all...

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

What about Bioshock that has created an huge game making following, Mass Effect breaking down genres, Graw, Rainbow Six Vegas, Lost Odyssey, Mirrors edge, Gears, Army of 1 ( & 2 ), I'm Alive, Alpha Protocol, Transformers: War for cybertron, Lost Planet 1, APB, Borderlands..the list goes on and on...

Lets add some stellar arcade titles like Shadow Complex, Undertow and the recent Blacklight: Tango down...

What about Sony...lol...They know what's up...they have PAID for not one but 2 licences for a couple of MMO's you might of heard of...The Agency and DC Universe online. Add that they also licenced Unreal CG animation licence for, you guessed it...making movies and such....lol.

Unreal 4 will be earth shattering and no doubt will be part of the launch line up of the next gen, starting in 2012.

The team seems to know how to use UE3 very well. Batman AA was one of the best looking games last year.

3monthsp5694d ago

For a game that had some cool detailed/texture models almost no other game can touch(i'm looking @ you uncharted), there were dome bad parts like the lack of AA that made it look bad and that ragdoll was really bad. Awesome Batman game, finally.

Yes_25694d ago

Awesome game. Beautiful environments. But the horrible "typical Unreal Engine" look of the characters was really off-putting.

They looked like creepy disproportioned plastic dolls.

corneliuscrust5694d ago (Edited 5694d ago )

The ENGINE does *NOT* dictate how Devs CHOOSE to design their models, nor does it dictate how they animate them. If they looked like "creepy disproportioned plastic dolls" to you, then ask Rocksteady why they decided to make the models and animations that way.

The Engine is a toolset, the assets are ENTIRELY built by the devs.

1rst was my GOTY

hands down, awesome game

I'd have raged if inFamous wasnt included. Glad to see its on the list twice :)

ZeekQuattro4701d ago

The only thing I disagree with on that list is MVC 3. I liked 2 so much better and stopped playing 3 shortly after I bought it because it just wasn't as fun and I missed characters that were in the 2nd one.

Brashcast: Episode 13 – It’s Batman, not Batboy….and that’s a scientific fact

Brash Games writes "Liam and Ross like their Batmen manly, their slim consoles, well, not shit and their normal consoles from a galaxy far, far away. Reggie face-of-meat encourages bullying, Sony still can’t do advertising and Liam almost enjoys Kinect. All this, and as always, so much more".

How To Improve Our Gaming Experience

There are loads of ways to improve our gaming experience. I’m sure there are more than a few out there who’ve happily guzzled some mind-altering drugs and freaked when they came across their first feral ghoul in Fallout 3. You’ve also got those people who like to immerse themselves in the game: from the people screaming sexist and racist insults over headsets while playing [insert FPS of your choice here] to the people who spend mortgage-sized chunks of money to bring their ‘MechWarrior’ fantasies almost to sweaty life. That’s not forgetting the bunch of mates who get together, have a few drinks and gradually get more sullen with each other over Need for Speed or FIFA 2012.
