Why Can't Shooters Get Bosses Right?

RespawnAction says, "This is still a question that I can't find a logical answer to. I mean, RPG's (not rocket propelled grenades), action-RPG's, fighting games, strategy games--all get bosses right. You may get the occasional bad one here and there but for the most part, when you pop in a game from one of those genres, you know a sweet boss is coming. Most notably from the RPG side...

So why can't the biggest and probably most profitable genre out there get this mechanic right? The ironic part is, the bosses usually look pretty badass as well, or just flat out intimidating. So there ya' go, they've got the looks, just not the charisma."

Resistance had some pretty impressive bosses

respawnaction5792d ago (Edited 5792d ago )

With scale and 'aw' factor then yes they did..

Gameplay wise.... Not so much

Edit: you mean R1 or 2?

tunaks15792d ago

another game that comes to minds is the Metroid Prime series. People don't generally call it a fps, but I consider it an fps that happens to have a good single player game. Those games had great boss battles too.

SeanRL5792d ago

R1 had some ok bosses IMO.

HolyOrangeCows5792d ago (Edited 5792d ago )

I liked the bosses in the Resistance games and those 4-legged things were fun to take down in Halo 3.

He's right about that big thing in R2, though. That fight could have been longer and had more variety to it.

ExplosionSauce5792d ago (Edited 5792d ago )

Are excellent single player FPS experiences.
The series is usually under-looked sometimes because it doesn't have the amount of marketing and hype other shooters get.
It's not war oriented, but it has more gameplay elements in its single-player than other shooters, like upgrades and gaining new abilities throughout the games.

rockleex5791d ago (Edited 5791d ago )

Has some of the best bosses ever, even when you take games from other genres into consideration.

Do people forget that MGS is a shooter series just because it focuses its a stealth game? Lol.

MGS' main genre is shooter, sub genre is stealth.

People need to play games like the Painkiller series, Resistance 2, or System Shock 2. Just because these console FPS addicts can't play anything non-Halo or non-CoD doesn't mean that other FPSs are lacking in boss battles.

T9X695792d ago

How about Borderlands? Crawmerax was epic if you didn't cheat to win.

DlocDaBudSmoka5792d ago

cuz the guy was bitchin about resistance 2.

WhatARump5792d ago

I've killed crawmerax about 50 or so times :D
it used to be so much fun x)

Our survival method was kinda cheap but my friend would run around and distract crawmerax and goons while i took out his crit spots :P

White-Sharingan5792d ago

Resistance 2 has one of the best bosses in the FPS genre

Tachyon_Nova5792d ago

Its not just shooters, games like the new Prince of Persia's have had somewhat dissapointing boss battles, although I have still enjoyed both the PS3/360 games (I'm seemingly alone in the world as someone who liked the 2008 Prince Of Persia).

Other non-shooters with dissapointing 'boss battles' are games like Dirt 2, the 1 on 1 races against your main competitors were far too easy unless you pump the difficulty right up to full, and even then...

Some shooters have enjoyable boss battles, like Resistance 1 and 2, BioShock 1 + 2 (Defeating a bunch of Big Daddies I found to be very enjoyable, although they were much harder to take down in the first one). Infamous, which you could almost call a shooter in the sense you 'fire' all your weapons, had good boss battles.

Shooters with unejoyable boss battles? Well I'm fearing a lot of disagrees here, but Killzone 2's battle against Radec was pretty poorly executed, although the lead up was good. Uncharted 1's final battle was appailing, there is no excuse for such a scripted sequence of play in my eyes.

gamerzBEreal175792d ago (Edited 5792d ago )

i Know so did MGS4 it had great bosses

Tomdc5792d ago

resistance 1 had decent bosses but resistance 2 had the worst bosses i have come across in a shooter

Terarmzar5792d ago

The majority of the time bosses are in those sci fi shooter, i couldnt see fighting a boss in battlefield, cod, and Moh.

dizzleK5792d ago

thats a big part of the problem, its kinda hard to fight a super tank or a helicopter that shoots smaller helicopters when every fps is set in modern day afghanistan.

theres simply no excuse for the lameness of the sci-fi games though. thats just pure laziness.

raztad5792d ago

That is one of the reason SP campaigns in modern day war games are very, very lame IMO. Good boss fights are traditional trademark of a good action video game.

Helicopters and tanks are the "bosses" and then there is always a call for airstrike or some handy rpgs to take them out. Meh. Even UC2 bosses were nothing to write home.

Natsu X FairyTail5792d ago

Old Shooting games had all kinds of boss battles. But i guess the shooters we have right now are based on real life events and are more realistic so it would be dumb to have boss fights. But there's some in Resistance halo killzone aswell.

vickers5005792d ago

I kind of liked that boss fight. At least it wasn't a passive boss fight like most are these days.

SOAD5792d ago

That final Boss fight was so lame. The game should have ended with Fontaine donning some kind of super-mech Big Daddy Suit and trying to blow you up with rockets.

Sarevok5792d ago (Edited 5792d ago )

Gow is not a Fps silly..

oldjadedgamer5792d ago

God of War is a shooter?

I don't know if I even consider this trolling, just stupidity

El-Fenemeno12135792d ago

Lol, this was random. But if you really are clueless, FPS=First Person Shooter

N4BmpS5792d ago

That was uh, that was cute. Just laugh it off.

skip2mylou5792d ago

such a genius no wonder your in Harvard

rambler5792d ago

"Such a genius, no wonder you're in Harvard"

Fixed it for you.

Spydr075792d ago

@rambler
You forgot the period.

rambler5792d ago (Edited 5792d ago )

lol. I got burned.

"At rambler.
You forgot the period."

Fixed that for you. Petty, I know.

skip2mylou5792d ago (Edited 5792d ago )

lol, thanks for fixing it. but of course that's why I'm not in Harvard

Spydr075791d ago

Actually, no, you didn't fix anything for me. Since "@" is widely accepted on forums as shorthand for "At", it's not a mistake. Nor would the period be needed after "@rambler" because I can use it as a heading and need no punctuation there. IF you were even going to use any punctuation there, it should be a colon and not a period.

"lol. I got burned."

Would also be more correctly written as:

"Lol, I got burned."

Nice try, though.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle32d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde38d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy39d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7740d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga40d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199239d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga39d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman39d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box40d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion39d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7240d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7540d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit40d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14940d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7740d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
