ok, I loved Secret of Evermore...
but to have SoE on there and no Secret of Mana??

GWAVE5779d ago

Or what about Terranigma?

I guess nobody played it, but Terranigma was on par - if not better - than SoM, Chrono Trigger, FF3, etc.

monkeybizz5779d ago (Edited 5779d ago )

SOE was average in my opinion. It only got a cult following due to the fact it was released so close after CT and people therefore thought it was the next coming of some holy man. The fact that CT is not there is an outrage.

Whereas there were many better RPGs on the SNES: BOF, FF6, SOM.

Authors opinion though, so its all good. One of the main reasons top 10 game articles suck.

Some of the best games ever made:

1) Chrono Trigger- SNES its Akira Toriyama Enix and Squaresoft not Squeenix

2) Final Fantasy III or VI- SNES/SFamicom the best FF RPG

3) Yu Yu Hakusho Tokubetuhen - Super Famicom unique split-screen cinematic fighting game play ever!

4) Mobile Suit Gundam F91- Super Famicom - Unique mecha game play ever!

5) Dragon Ball Z Super Botouden 2-Super Famicom The best SF II alternative

6) Super Metroid

7) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

8) Secret of Mana

9) Street Fighter II

10) Star Fox

I put the Super Famicom games here because I played all of them on my SNES using a game cartridge adaptor. So they are legit.

if you havent at least tried the Super Famicom games you are missing a lot!

America is not the world .... and there were a lot of great games for the Super Famicom.

And while we are at it here are my:

I have beaten Terranigma two times and for me the game's on par with Chrono Trigger. And BTW just beat Chrono Trigger and got 3 different endings 2 weeks ago but right now I'm playing Chrono Cross, another amazing game.

I always thought that Chrono Cross was crap cus of the huge changes fromChrono Trigger but oh boy... Chrono Cross has like 40 playable characters (Glenn with double Einlanzer is the coolest), lots of side-quests, many different endings and choices that slightly change the course of the game and the characters that you can recruit. And on top of all this a beautiful soundtrack and a really good story. Now I understand why GameSpot rated Chrono Cross with a 10, the game's freaking criminally under-rated master piece!

Myze5779d ago (Edited 5779d ago )

Chrono Cross was ps1, actually. Oh, how I wish Squenix would make a new Chrono game (Chrono Cross director is/was on FFXI, going to FFXIV, so it looks like it's never gonna be made *cry*). If they did make a new one for, say, ps3, I would forgive them of all the crap they've done for the past 5 years or so.

monkeybizz5778d ago

I stand corrected. It was so long ago, and i never found CC to be top tier.

Myze5779d ago (Edited 5779d ago )

This list may be an opinion, but it's pretty bad. Castlevania 4, Contra 3, and Secret of Evermore should not be on any top 10 SNES lists (at least, in my opinion). They are great games (I love SoE), but there are more than 10 games that are better than them.

Not having Final Fantasy 6, Secret of Mana, or Chrono Trigger on the list, three of the greatest games ever made, is borderline ridiculous. Terranigma, as some are saying, should also be there (was never released in the US, but there was a PAL version, which is where this site is). Final Fantasy 4 is better than some of the games (but it would be a little RPG heavy then).

I know I sound a little hostile, especially since, like I said, this is just an opinion piece, but it's just so bad that some of the games are left off. I would leave off some of the games (other than the three I mentioned earlier), but I can understand certain games like Mega Man X, Star Fox and F-Zero, even if I wouldn't put them there myself (although Mega Man X would be close).

My list would be:

10. tie* - Super Mario RPG and Lufia & the Fortress of Doom
9. Breath of Fire
8. Super Mario World 1 and 2 (Yoshi's Island was better)
7. Earthbound
6. Terranigma
5. Final Fantasy 4
4. Secret of Mana
3. Chrono Trigger
2. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
1. Final Fantasy 6

Ok, so it's a bit RPG heavy, but that's just where my bias lies, and probably should negate all the hateful stuff I said before, since I'm sure plenty of people would completely disagree with my list as well. ;)

Dac2u5779d ago (Edited 5779d ago )

That's a nice list, the only thing I'd change is add Out of this World(Another World) and maybe Flashback and Prince of Persia. I think I'd end up making it a top 15 or 20, top 10 is too few for me. And FFVI is where it should be, at #1.

I think the author's list is a really good non-rpg based list, they are all great games.

I wonder if Earthbound will ever make it to Virtual Console?

ico925779d ago (Edited 5779d ago )

no Chrono Trigger that was like the perfect RPG , also Super Mario RPG is missing, but still a pretty good list

eagle215779d ago

and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is missing. Superb!

Dac2u5779d ago

It's not very likely, what I've read is that there are too many pop culture references in the game. Nintendo fears some type of lawsuit will happen if the game comes out. It was a great game, it's sad that we'll probably never see it outside of an emulator ever again.

boyo5779d ago

Never played Secret of Mana - is it really that good?

bedroomcoder5779d ago

Yes, it really is. But I put SoE in as it had such a poor reception when it came out, and it totally didn't deserve it...

TANUKI5779d ago

3 player Co-op? Intriguing Story? AWESOME gameplay? Sick graphics?

H@ll YES, secret of mana is "good" (and good is an understatement) :D

ico925779d ago

incredible but the only downside is its extremley rare and copies are pretty pricy from what i've heard

LeonSKennedy4Life5779d ago

1) Donkey Kong Country 2
2) Yoshi's Island
3) Chrono Trigger
4) Zombies Ate My Neighbors
5) Earthbound

How does Super Mario World beat out Super Mario World 2?!?

DlocDaBudSmoka5779d ago

when did that release? or was it not on snes? i had both the snes and genesis, n favored the genesis. idk i just did. oh yea BTW list is FAIL. no Donkey Kong CUNTry.

NecrumSlavery5779d ago (Edited 5779d ago )

I think Super Mario World 2 is Yoshi's Island.

BTW, anyone ever heard of EVO the search for Eden? It was a really cool game. Kind of like Feeding Frenzy, where you ate the smaller creature but with all the points you earn, you can spend then on evolving your character. And it had many paths and out comes. Like evolving into a monkey to climb, or devolving into a fish to swim down a secret water hole. I'd like another one, it wad a really unique game.

Super Mario World had a far greater impact. It was the game that made me want a snes, and when I finally got it I played it religiously. Yoshi's Island was great when it came out but SMW sticks in my mind more.

Capt-FuzzyPants5779d ago

Were there any Final Fantasies on the SNES

RedDead5779d ago

6 of them, Normally there would be FF6 on a top ten Snes list. sometimes ff4 or 5 aswell. I guess it's just not in the authors taste though.

Capt-FuzzyPants5779d ago

Yea i played 4 on the ds and it was great. And six is supposed to be as good, if not , better than seven. So why arent there any

Five Games I'd Love To See On the Neo Geo AES+

These classics need to make a return.

Blues Journey is the game I'd like to see.

Popsicle21d ago

Pre-ordered mine a few days ago. Love this concept and hope there are more games announced. I can’t justify paying the prices for games that collectors are asking for. It’s the primary reason I own almost every console except the Neo Geo.

Agent7521d ago

I've pre ordered one here in the UK, no games though, as I'll move it on for a higher price. The white model looks awesome, but as expected, the price is too high. We'll probably see more of those all in one cartridges from China containing every AES game. In the UK, AES+ game at £70 ($95) is better than eye watering prices for the originals, but these games are so old and I can honestly say SNK didn't release many classics. The Metal Slug series is the only series I rate, there were just too many Street Fighter clones and not enough scrolling fighting games. Overall, the Neo Geo was poor for all genres apart from one on one fighters. Videos on YouTube asking for games from that console generation to be ported to the AES+, but who'd want to pay £70 for Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2? There's a lot of SNK collections out there, the best being Metal Slug Anthology on the PlayStation 2. The Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the Switch contains 12 games for around £30, instead of £840 if released on the AES+. For collectors, the AES+ is the best news since sliced bread. Are there enough SNK fans out there? Nowhere near. Those £70 cartridges will soon start creeping up in price and it'll be a re-run of the original console.

I always wanted one in the 90's but couldn't afford it. Now i can but i think if i get one it will be collecting dust fast. It's a nostalgia thing i guess.

Why the Wii is Such a Nostalgic System in 2026

The Wii is now a retro console. Let’s get nostalgic about an often maligned system.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg24d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree24d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai24d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
