MS: Hardcore Kinect games within 18 months

Microsoft has pledged that its new casual focus - with motion sensing camera Kinect and new 4GB Arcade console - does not mean it is "stepping away" from hardcore gamers.

And it's even put a timescale on when we can expect to see hardcore games on the device - within 18 months.

I guess I'll start considering even buying it in 18 months then.

But sorry, Kinectimals and Kinect Sports dont warrant a $150 add on device

5822d ago
King_of _the_Casuals5822d ago

I'm buying Kinect with or without the Hardcore aspect of it. My girlfriend keeps asking me when this thing is coming out. She's more excited about it then me! LOL

nickjkl5822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

casuals are you implying you have a girlfriend

tinybigman5822d ago

When I see it. Even then I wouldn't waste $150 on it.

Ju5822d ago

"She's more excited about it then me!"

Guess she's buying, then, isn't she ? If not, what you gonna do with that camera "after" ?

8thnightvolley5822d ago

2 gfs are so excited for this thou ... i surely will have to buy it i have no choice.. or they will keep nagging.

gallospqra5822d ago

Here they are: http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Oh, wait..

Ok, seriously,
first they announce the price, which is a total disappointment;
then they say 2+ games are maybe going to be created, no one knows when or how;
then again they say it'll take 18 months to deliver a single no-title hardcore game

Microsoft is failing more and more every single day

HolyOrangeCows5822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

So the current 360 userbase won't have anything to be excited about for almost 2 years?
That's ridiculous. Way to poorly plan the thing out.

"casuals are you implying you have a girlfriend?"
That's ridiculous. We all know Bungie account #58546089 doesn't have any women around him.

18 MONTHS, that is not next year but the year after and we are still in 2010!and what hardcore games..fps,driving...HOW? seriously this is PR talk

kinect will have already be deemed a success or failure by then,i for one aint getting it and neither are any of my bredrins

ProjectVulcan5822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

I agree 18 months??? We'll be far too hyped about the incoming next generation machines by then. I fully expect them to be announced or heavily hinted at around the start of 2012 for a launch within a year

36T5822d ago

Vulcan. Simple question. Do you honestly believe that Kinect will end with this generation? LOL! I love N4G!!

ProjectVulcan5822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

You appear to be thinking that kinect will still be viable into the next generation. Microsoft have indeed said so, but will anyone still care? Do YOU honestly believe they'll stick with the same kinect hardware for the next six or seven years??

It wont be bundled with a new generation of machine unless microsoft really want to price themselves into the stratosphere, it'll be the whole bluray/PS3 thing all over again.

Only the delusional believe that the hardcore will give a damn about kinect in 18 months with the impending arrival of a new generation. They'll want to save up to buy a new console for a reasonable price and play next generation games, not blow money on kinect to play the 'core' games microsoft promise on a system on its way out. I fully expect microsoft to try and knock out a further advanced version that will break compatability with next gen games. Its a natural thing to do, PS2 eyetoy to PS3 eyetoy being a prime example, and not the sole. The rule not the exception......

Talk about splitting your core consumers interests.....a mistake made over and over by companies long since dead in the hardware industry. A fatal error only a bunch of dimwitted marketeers could make. They need a history lesson

Spenok5822d ago

Well said. 18 months is a rather long time to bring game out for the hardcore fans. By then it could be totally irelevant.

Inside_out5822d ago

I not sure what hardcore means anymore...lol. As far as Kinect is concerned, I just want a compelling story with interesting gameplay elements. Kinect could easily play Heavy Rain. Is that RTE gameplay considered hardcore???. I think you will see a Heavy Rain type of game coming soon...maybe it might be Heavy Rain.

Here's an interesting look at a game already being made and will be out in 2011. This game will sell millions of copies and I would guess, millions of 360/Kinects...

nycredude5822d ago

You guys have officially jumped off the edge bro. Now waiting 18 months for some "hardcore" game is great to you when you guys been bashing the Ps3 as waitstation, Ps3 has no games! Hahaha how much things have changed.

Seriously though this is freaking lame.

asyouburn5822d ago

but scenes like "the bear" require really quick analog stick movement and button presses. the 150 - 200 ms lag would ruin the experience.

Forbidden_Darkness5822d ago

Sony owns Heavy Rain, so good luck with that.

Ju5822d ago

Also, how do you walk in such a game ?

18 months? You mean when the next consoles launch?

NYPunkster5822d ago

A year and a half away... that's a long time in gamer years.

marinelife95822d ago

They better hope there isn't a delay on those "hardcore" games. Then you could be looking at the next generation before they come out.

TrevorPhillips5822d ago

my piece of crap brother got me 29 disagrees with this comment. I should change my N4G password O_o

NYPunkster5822d ago

Dude that's your brother show the little dude some luv.

kneon5822d ago

in 18 months we'll be into the beginning of the launch window for the next generation of consoles. I wonder if these are being developed for the Xbox.next.

In 18 months?! That would be around Jan 2012. Isn't that when the world will end?

I think most people will be concerned with stocking up on canned foods and gathering water supplies :D

Snakefist305822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

Dude stop these 2012 the world gonna end Bullsh*t it scares the shit out of me and I do want to die early cause I havnt got a girlfriend yet and also I havnt lose my virginity too.

8thnightvolley5822d ago

awww ..lol how cute.. loool.

gietzy5822d ago

Hahaha, just fuck a hooker if loosing your Vs is that important.

WithMyLastBreath5822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

it was like Dec 21, 2012 haha. I am not sure if I would have said this if I was Microsoft. It opens the door for the wait-and-see approach. Just maybe consumers (not just talking about 360 just in general)will think for one second and wait those 18 months to see if this is true. If true, buy it then, and if not, you didnt waste $150 or w/e it costs.

nickjkl5822d ago

nasa is the government man they are trying to keep the public calm man
they are messing with youre mind man they are preparing for 2012 while keeping those not involved silent

Pillville5822d ago

Anyone believing the 2012 crap, please leave me all your personal belonging at the end of 2011. I'll be happy to take them.

My calendar runs out every year, but I don't go ape-sh1t, I go to Office Max and buy a new one.

Here's NASA to explain:
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/...

air15822d ago

I agree... But at the same time if something huge was to happen on that date do you really think our government would tell us years in advance? Just cause nassa says that there is no science to prove it then it can't be true is just bull. Do you have any idea on how much stuff happens out in space and even here on earth that have yet to have any scientific answer to but it still happens, many time in there face and not know it.

Pillville5822d ago

If you don't believe NASA then find any other site that isn't either tin-foil-hat nuts or people trying to sell a book.

The actual Myans will tell you that the calendar end represents a "New World", as in a new age of mankind or spiritual enlightenment.

1) religious prophecies are all BS.
2) Even if you did follow their religion, nothing says the world will end, it's just a different age for mankind. If you think about it, we're already there. Think of life 100 years ago and think of life now, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

ArchangelMike5822d ago (Edited 5822d ago )

so basically it's best to wait until 2012 to get kinect o.0 sounds like fail to me! And by 'hardcore' Iguess they mean Halo or GeOW type games. Will be interesting to see how FPS and TPS games which require about 8 different buttons for corresponding actions, will be implemented with kinect!

MajestieBeast5822d ago

It will be in the bargainbin by then just like HDdvd.

nycredude5822d ago

I wonder if I could use it for my Ps3 or PC as a video cam?

Omega45822d ago

The fact that an article like this failed to go straight to the front page, yet Kinect is overpriced/laggy/fail articles do speaks volumes.

IneedWeed5822d ago

Uhh "MS: Hardcore Kinect games within 18 months" is a title that doesn't grab a lot of attention. M$ should stop bullsh*tting and just admit Kinect are only aiming at the casual crowd. M$ forgot about us core gamers and just want the Wii money.

5822d ago
jack_burt0n5822d ago

@omega
why? this is hardly positive, its f**king crazy

mastiffchild5822d ago

Omega-thng is we KNOW how the lag is and we KNOW how much it's gonna cost-they can be reported on without resorting to MS PR speak with NO evidence to back it up. Simply put this isn't anything like as meaty or checkable as the stories you're moaning about going to front page.

Also, just how many articles deliberately misleading folk about PSN+ did we get? All of them forgetting to mention the fact it's entirely optional yet comparing it to Live for no apparent reason-were you moaning then?

Fact is we haven't SEEN anything remotely "hardcore" for Kinect and MS know people are expecting it. If there was something, no matter how early on in development don't you think it would be VERY wise of MS to show something? Anything? In that respect this article isn't even positive-18months? Might as well not be happening with that timescale and with nothing to show us. they don't answer the two big questions-will these games have to be on rails because there's no alternative to analogue sticks for getting round in game and just what kind of games regarded as "core" can we expect if there's no buttons/triggers?

I'd love them to think of something amazing and impress everyone but, really, there's just no reason to think that's going to happen, not yet anyway. Had they shown something or told us exactly what's coming then perhaps it'd be massive news but as it is it's PR talking loud and saying NOTHING of an real interest. What did you expect? "No core games ever"? They wouldn't say that even if it were true, would they? We have to wait and see but til they do I just don't see this as big news anyway.

asyouburn5822d ago

"gears for kinect in 18 months" it wouldve been front page material, but its like they said, "random games coming sometime"

Ju5822d ago

Can go to the front page any time now. Like within 18 month. LOL.

Microsoft Gaming Revenue Drops 7% Year-on-Year, Content and Services Down 5%, Xbox Hardware Down 33%

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio60d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing60d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9260d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit60d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing60d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9260d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay62d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn263d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn262d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown63d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay62d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay62d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac62d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger63d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300063d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde63d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood63d ago (Edited 63d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde62d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_62d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
