FIFA 11 DRM revealed

Great news for PC gamers interested in picking up FIFA 11 this autumn. Not only will the game be on-par with the console versions on a technical and feature set level, but it'll also use one of the more pleasant forms of DRM.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com about DRM at a recent FIFA 11 press day, PC producer Ian Jarvis said: "The current system, that I'm allowed to say, is that we are using is the same one that Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 used, which is called EA Access. That's what we're currently working on."

i really dont understand as to why none of these publishers use Steam DRM.

Letros5789d ago

EA has their own Digital Distribution store, their game would be exclusive to Steam and thus lose money if they used Steam DRM.

chak_5789d ago

yep.

Though I take'em on steam anyway :D

Tomito5789d ago

Why don't developers/publishers realise that if there is DRM, then piracy will be rife.

MexicanAppleThief5789d ago (Edited 5789d ago )

If there is no DRM, then piracy will be rife-er. PC can be a tricky platform to please, even Steam DRM doesn't stop piracy even though it has the respect of many PC gamers.

ic4ruz5789d ago

You actually think that ?

Most people pirate because it's free, very few think about the "drm". Pirates just use it as an excuse to pirate games. It's pathetic.

Rush5789d ago (Edited 5789d ago )

Actually I pirate games for 1 sole reason easy access, I have never in my life pirated a game available on steam. Simply because steam is an easy place to get the content I want without having to mess around trying to find it.

Alot of the games I pirate have either stopped being printed in shops so I have to buy them pre-owned from someone. Or totally ain't available in my area.

I mean only idiots believe buying a rare game pre-owned that has stopped being printed is somehow better then simply pirate downloading said game.

If the game is still being printed and offered via digital download or in my local area then am happy to pay. If not it's getting pirated simple as that.

And everyone who pretends pirates are some evil being are 99 percent of the time massive hypocrites, Do you honestly believe anyone has ever viewed even youtube hasn't seen content they should of payed for?

Nihilism5789d ago

I will have to pirate F.E.A.R 2 soon because the copy which I own and bought at retail ( though it requires steam ) will no longer work since a steam update, and they have not responded to me about it.

A similar thing happened with AVP3...with DRM games sometimes the pirated version is the only version that works, I have learnt that the hard way, the next game is on them instead ;)

MRHARDON5789d ago

Is like challenging the piraters, so it doesn't lower piracy, its actually higher the chance of having alot of piraters on your game then a game that didnt have DRM.

PopEmUp5789d ago

there probably gonna have a hackers tournament lol

LOLconsoles5789d ago

*starts up bittorrent* drm sucks.

MexicanAppleThief5789d ago (Edited 5789d ago )

And this is the guy who loves PC gaming... well, loved in his case.

NBA Jam ? w00t 0_o Thankfully I don't buy any sports games. I hope they are talking about NBA Jam disc based version not the On fire downloadable one

DOMination-4913d ago

I can understand the need to shut down servers. But doing it for games that only came out last year is a bit ridiculous.

I normally try and defend EA on here because I don't think they are as bad as many people make them out to be but but this would annoy me if I owned any of these games.

"EA Sports Server Shutdowns"

... and that is why I don't buy EA sports games.

RAYMEISTER4913d ago (Edited 4913d ago )

They're probably following 2k's lead. 2k has already shut down nba 2k12 servers. Which means the average life expectancy u can get from playing nba 2k13 (if u were to buy it now) would be about 10 months. Don't expect to play online longer than that. That means there product is a NO buy for me. If they offered LAN option on the pc side u could always use Tunngle to play online, but they don't so there's no way to play online.

torchic4913d ago

wow they shut down 2K12 servers already???

at least EA gives people 2-3 years to play online, wow. nobody can complain about EA now

and to be fair to EA they shut servers down based on what percentage of people still play online. I remember them saying that they shut servers down which make up less than 1% of traffic across all EA servers, at least that's what they say.

brish4913d ago

"nobody can complain about EA now"
- torchic

Yes we can. 2k sports are also on my "no buy" list.

Dark5tar14913d ago

They better not mean On Fire Edition.

Dark5tar14913d ago

"The decision to retire older EA titles is never easy." That's also what they said when they shut down the servers for BF2: MC.

NicSage4913d ago

I think maybe with the release of pay for your own server on BF3 this is what EA might continue to use for all games giving an option for people who want to play it online.

I'm so sick of EA and all the BS, i'm sick of a lot of publishers anymore.
