I_find_it_funny5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

Halo is a good game

TheLeprachaun5787d ago

Yeah because Halo is the only game with sequels right? Pretty much every successful game nowadays is assured at least a trilogy.

Put it this way there were 2 halo games on the xbox, 2 halo games on the xbox 360(I wouldn't count ODST since it's basically an expansion pack) and I assume this new one is for the next xbox. 2 games of a franchise per generation is not that much. Zelda does it, Final Fantasy does it, Assassins Creed does it, and countless other games do it as well.

Even newer franchises like Uncharted and Little Big Planet have 2 games on one generation. I'm sure they'll see future iterations too.

So relax, more Halo is a good thing, you don't have to buy it and it's not like a Halo game is coming out every year.

sinclaircrown5787d ago

They don't say how long it will be in production..

Master Cheif is the poster child for xbox. Its part of their brand. There will be a Halo 4, just like there will be an Uncharted 3 and 4.

They would be silly not to make it, and millions of poeple enjoy them so why not?

I'm not saying give up on new IP's, but this would be like telling nintendo to stop making Mario games..

Chris3995787d ago

other than it being a particular companies flagship title. Mario is targeted toward a universal appeal and audience. Like a Pixar film. It is ageless and sexless. Halo, as a franchise and Master Chief as an icon have a very specific, male audience and demographic.

You can't put Master Chief in a puzzle game, racer or cooking sim without the whole thing coming off as ridiculous. You can do that with Mario.

crxss5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

Nope you're wrong. This new Halo, from what I've heard from reliable resources, is for Kinect. Now 10 year old kids can corpse hump in their own living room. Think of this Halo spin-off similar to the idea of Link's Crossbow Training.

Fanb0y5787d ago

There is demand for more Halo. Why stop?

Chubear5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

Sequels to a game is not "milking". If gamers want more of a game then it's a stupid business decision not to have sequels.

Milking is when companies see they don't have to improve their sequel - or any other affiliated product - much at all and they'll still rack in the dough thus maximizing profits - MILKING. (they, a lot of the time, pump out these products faster than on average time periods)

They esentially put the franchise on criuse control cause they know ANYTHING with the franchise name on it will bring in the mula and they don't have to put in much initial investment at all.

-Alpha5786d ago (Edited 5786d ago )

@Chu

Yes you are right, but I dont see how Halo constitutes as this. The first guy posts an image of milking and of course, people agree. Your definition doesn't really include Halo as much as it does games like Ratchet and Clank-- but put that image on a R&C thread and you will get swallowed with disagrees. Spin off games aren't considered milked since they are different and not a part of the main series. Halo Reach is coming a good 3 years after #3, the last sequel. Additionally, it's making numerous changes to warrant a new game. Hell even MW2 made enough changes to warrant a new game. As for ODST, yes, it was an 8 hour SP game, but guess what? It was highly praised, and MANY games (Heavenly Sword, etc). have short single player components. ODST even included a new mode and a multiplayer disc.

Milking isn't a problem if the game is enjoyed. Why would you want developers to fix what isn't broken? Why change the formula for God of War 3 when it works so well? It's as if people expect big changes for sequels that rely on the same formula-- changing a core formula is a huge risk. Look at Reach-- many people are complaining that it's TOO different.

I appreciate this discussion, but these topics only ever come out once a 360 game is criticized. I have never seen people be so open about talking about this with R&C, etc. I don't understand, I feel that it's as if people are just out to ruin any pro-360 thread here. Hell, the guy above says Halo is a good game and he has more disagrees than agrees.

For the record I dont even consider games like R&C milked. Yes, there are a lot of them, but if the game is good, who cares? It's not as if milked games are bad games. Sure, a huge change would be nice to try, but at the same time it's very risky.

It's funny that Halo is getting attacked for this but sports games or even R&C virtually got away with doing it even worse.

As much as I love Halo, I won't be supporting 343 industries in any way. Bungie FTW!

Kingdom Come5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

Judge a company without witnessing what they are capable of...
Besides, I remember reading a few articles a small while back claiming that a number of previous Bungie members being in the team.
EDIT: The creative Director of the company Frank O'Connor is an Ex-Bungie employee.

hennessey865787d ago

i think you should give them a chance before you judge them, they could turn out to be the saviours of halo

TheLeprachaun5787d ago

You do realise 343 basically is Bungie right? The creative director of 343 and tons more of its employees were in Bungie and worked on both Halo CE and Halo Reach.

OSU_Gamer5787d ago

@Leprauchaun

That scares me because although I LOVE Halo, I really want to see something different.

Halo 3 - 2007
Halo Wars - 2009
Halo ODST - 2009
Halo Reach - 2010

That's three in the last two years. And yes, even though ODST was a glorified expansion pack, it's still a separate commercial game no matter how you want to look at it.

If anything they're stepping up production of the series. But I will agree with you that ALL franchises are getting milked to death like COD/ FF. It's a shame that only a handful of new IPs this gen really took off enough to warrant sequel. It's also a shame that eventually every one of our favorite franchises will end up like COD/ FF. Engaging sure, but still the same old thing.

Munky5787d ago

I just find it quite funny that the term "milking" is never used for any of the Sony first party games such as KZ,UC, or GOW... they hall have multiple sequels on top of the spinoffs for handhelds.

NnT32915787d ago

It's not like sony doesnt do the same thing. There has been 5 god of war games since 2005 : GOW 1,2,3 Chain of olympus, ghost of sparta. It's business, why would they stop making Halo when millions of people still love it ? just like Mario, Zelda ...

Chris3995787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

And there hasn't been FOUR Uncharteds or Killzones in 4 years YET. There is still a vast opportunity for "milking".

I'll give you God of War though.

But personally that series ended with #3. I don't feel the need to revisit it after that. It ended on an epic high-note and that left me contented.

P.S. Why does every thread have to turn into a polarized argument about console manufacturers (aside from NPD/ data/ sales threads maybe)?

I have enjoyed all three consoles from each of the Big Three this gen. I love JRPGs and random, quirky titles regardless of their platform. I don't care where I get this content from. When did gamers become corporate advocates? Talk about loosing your sense as a consumer. Here's a pro tip, you can love the hobby - gaming - without drinking the corporate Koo-laid. I bought a 360 in 2008 because the PS3 had no HD JRPG content. In 2009, I switched the bulk of my playtime to my PS3 now that they DO have a wealth of ported/ upcoming and released content. If the development of JRPGs was to shift exclusively to some other platform in the future, I WOULD SIMPLY BUY AND PLAY WHATEVER SYSTEM THAT WAS.

That is all. I am a gamer. Try it.

/ end rant

-Alpha5787d ago

Not only God of War but Ratchet and Clank too.

If you want to talk personally then personally a lot of fans only count the Halo main games, not the spin off titles.

Milking isn't a terrible thing. If the demand is high, then make the game. The problem comes when games become bad, and a lot of people enjoy Halo. So what's with the complaints? I still havent seen a lot of guys do what Bungie does, specifically in the multiplayer component. I'm not surprised Halo 4 is under development if true, but the franchise is still solid.

Chris3995787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

MP on the PC has been superior to anything produced by Bungie or any console game for that matter, for years upon years.

Consoles get props for ease of use and streamlined infrastructure, but they're really just closed system PCs.

And I think that the problem with milking is that ANY franchise, simply by being produced in excess loses some of it's 'freshness' and what made it unique (as, by the simple process of being remade ad infinitum, it is no longer so). The more you make something, the more attenuated that critical spark is that made the game once great. Sometimes it takes decades for this decay to occur, but it inevitably DOES. Final Fantasy XIII is testament to that - a great game sure, but not the pinnacle of it's genre. Persona 3 scored higher and has held the JRPG crown for the past few years (4 was just a refinement of the formula established in 3). And yes I realize the irony of using a "3rd iteration" to prove a point. But that game is so fresh and so dynamic and so constantly recreating itself, it's world and it's mechanics, that it is perhaps one of the few games that demonstrates how sequels SHOULD be done. A whole new game, not just new scenery and some added features.

Then you have something like Bioshock 2, where the creative pool simply wasn't large enough to sustain or warrant a sequel. That said, we'll probably get a Bioshock 3 in another year or so. That is my take on "milking".

Some stories should just be left alone and remembered.

That's how I feel anyhow.

-Alpha5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

I have no doubt what is made on the PC has a more open platform for features. But when talking about consoles, I always see the 360 get trashed in a double-standard fashion, and I dont get it. That is why I defend Bungie-- they have done a lot of great things with Halo/XBL yet somehow the conversation has diluted to Halo being overrated. There is always so much negativity with 360 articles. When R&C was getting yet another game no one complained much around here, but Halo can't catch that same break. I don't get why every 360 thread seems to get derailed into a fight where 360 fans are trying to fend off the PS3 fans who seem to cast some sort of double-judgment.

Halo 4 is under development, yes, and it's only now that people are talking about milking. But with something like Ratchet or God of War nobody complains about staleness. Why? I assume because they still enjoy the formula, and I say the same for Halo. In fact, Reach is changing Halo quite a bit.

Now I enjoy your comments because you bring a lot to the table. I just wish we could get this conversation with a PS3 game under the microscope.

That said, constant games do ruin the authenticity/uniqueness of a title, but that doesn't stop a game from being enjoyed. Halo has always been a highly rated and highly enjoyed franchise, so I look forward to it. Just because it's thought to be under development now doesn't mean it's coming anytime soon.

If I remember correctly God of War 3 was thought of right after God of War 2.

Yet, there seems to be this implication and this need to paint anything MS in some negative fashion-- in this case as cash-milking lazy developers. Cash-milking I'm sure, but I've never seen this topic come up with Final Fantasy 13, God of War, or Ratchet and Clank and if it has, it has been shot down real quick by the masses here.

Hell the first comment speaks volumes. Put that on a god of war or ratchet and clank thread and watch what happens.

Chris3995787d ago (Edited 5786d ago )

Furthermore, I did use the term ALL (in caps) when referring to the milking of franchises and again in the first post. And I also mentioned God of War in my second post, and stated quite happily that I would be content with the series to end. I realize that your comment was not directed solely or necessarily at me, but I that's my defense regardless :)

I also think that gamers, being passionate, fail to separate the product that they love (games) from the people who promote and market said product (MS, Sony, Nintendo). I've said this many times, but there is a distinct lack of consumer awareness and intelligence when it comes to this issue. You can like a game or franchise without liking how it is marketed or the practices of who (MS, Sony, Nintendo) is promoting it.

They are all guilty of a certain degree of bullshit, but as for why Sony hasn't been put under the microscope for their milking (which does indeed exist), I'd say it's simply because A.) there is a very strong Sony following on this site. B.) Sony simply have more established IPs (that's not a dig at MS' lack of 1st party content), that being games with one or more spin-offs/ sequels. MS has Halo, Gears, Fable and Forza as their flagships; or at least those are the franchises that they choose to illuminate the most. Certainly, there is a wealth of PC ports, multi-platform games and other content to fill and enrich the 360 library, but when we're looking at what each company selects to represent their console, Sony just has more and varied content. We're talking about 1st party games here, and their studios have paid off in this regard (though perhaps at the sacrifice of having a solid mascot for the PS3). Thus it's difficult to narrow the eye on a particular IP that stands out as ready to retire, when there are so many.

But yes, Ratchet is tired. I don't need to see him and his robot friend till next gen and after a substantial reboot. Killzone, Resistance and Uncharted should park it after the 3rd installment too, let's save some pizazz for 2013 (or whenever the next console gen starts) or beyond.

Speaking of what's to come, I understand that people just like to play familiar games/ characters/ franchises, and that's why I believe that moving forward the bulk of all games will be online and/ or MP experiences, with micro-transactions and expansion packs driving content for a franchise.

In 2015+, I'd be willing to bet that a very sizable portion of the gaming market will be MMOs or MMO hybrids. It is just a matter of time before COD/ FF/ insert favorite franchise here become primarily online experiences. Pretty much any comment from any major development house, as well as the push for online connectivity with consoles, indicates this.

Anyhoo, I'm dangerously close to inflicting a 20K crit with my massive wall of text and I'm out of bubbles to boot! :) So peace.

-Alpha5786d ago

+ bubbles to you firstly.

And second, I have no problem with you, and I appreciate your level-headedness. I was speaking generally in terms of this site. I don't find what Bungie is doing with the Halo franchise milking, nor do I think there is a problem with what they are doing. They put in the added effort to justify a new game (it can't be made as Halo 3 DLC), etc.

Yes, ODST was underwhelming for some based on length alone, but people seem to enjoy attacking it that way. Halo fans loved it, and despite Halo fanboys loving all that is Halo the game was irregardless of length (which was just as long as other titles this gen, with a new mode and same multiplayer) a well-received game.

I don't think it's fair to paint Bungie in the same light as someone like Infinity Ward. They've worked very hard IMO and have done a lot. The Halo franchise as a whole may be getting too much, but I dont think Halo 4 is coming anytime soon. I'm sure it's underway but that means nothing. Anyways, I'd love to talk more but I'm sneaking this text in at work :)

Nice conversation, thanks :D

I thought halo 3 ended terribly. Master Chief needs to die in this one. You can't have him just drift off into space and all he says is "Wake me, when you need me." This makes us think of a sequel. Hopefully they kill off MC in this game and let the series rest.

Halo art director leaves studio after 17 years with ominous message alluding to discontent

Glenn Israel writes: "As of today and after seventeen long years, I am officially no longer contributing to the Halo universe. There is little more I can say for the moment, though I intend to share this particular story in its entirety when it is absolutely safe to do so next year. In the meantime, I have a message for anyone and everyone who needs to hear it.

I know that the state of our industry seems dire, but never forget that you are *free to choose*. No illusion of security nor promise of wealth or fame or power is worth trading away your health, your dignity, your ethics or values - and no one can force you to. Stay strong, take evidence when necessary, and find where you belong."

My god.
There's a story for next year.

VenomUK224d ago

I’m really disappointed to learn there are still people/morale problems. I thought the whole point of rebranding 343i to Halo Studios was to signal that real changes had been made - not to cynically rebrand to paper over the problems.

I really hope the Halo CE remake is great and gets people hyped for the future of the series.

DarXyde224d ago

It's inevitable with the modern landscape. Even if some issues have been assuaged, new ones crop up all the time.

I'm willing to bet AI and the lack of regulation is causing substantial upset.

shinXseijuro225d ago (Edited 225d ago )

He said something very marking . We tend to complain a lot about the industry but deep down I realize that we never have we been offered this crazy amount of games all available for you to play now . You can literally play any sorts of games in 2025 . Nobody is forcing you to buy the latest COD or the latest BF . You’re more of a 8 bit cozy gaming guy there’s a whole niche of modern games for that . You like micromanaging there’s games for that . I feel like we have been spoiled so much we just stopped being realistic and thinking for ourselves . We follow trends cry about stuff online when you are the buyer you have the power .

I'm not buying any games until another Immersive sim is made.

Does this confirm a new Halo by next year?
What did they want him to do that made him feel it was morally wrong or a insult to his integrity?

There were reports that Halo 4 and Halo 5 had similar sales to Halo: Reach years ago. The clickbait websites and rage bait YouTubers from 2012-2016 just wanted to spread excessive negativity about the franchise for their own benefit.

VenomUK314d ago

What did Halo: Infinite sell?

Sciurus_vulgaris314d ago

I don’t know. However, I would assume around 10 million. All the Halo FPS titles have done around 10 million sales, except ODST. Halo 3, was reported to exceed 14 million copies. I still remember back in 2007-2008, Halo 3 and COD 4 would duke it out for the most played XBL game.

MrNinosan314d ago

@Sciurus

There is NO WAY Infinite sold 10 million. Wake up dude.
Once upon a time, there was gamers on the Xbox side who actually bought games. Those times are since long gone.

Infinite has most likely not even hit 5 million sales

slate91314d ago

Nearly 10 million units and killing the brand is crazy work. Nicely done.

@thesoftware720

AuraAbjure314d ago (Edited 314d ago )

Halo 4 is the best multiplayer ever! It’s even better than Titanfall 2. I admit Halo 4 got CoDified but there’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from other games sometimes and halo 4 did it sooooo well with that speed boost plus sword combo and SAW plus damage booth combo, holy guacamole 🥑

Some crucial improvements to halo 4 could’ve been to boost the power of the AA sentinel, and whenever matchmaking pits people against each other with an armor abilities turned off completely then the map needs to routinely spawn, plentiful, predictable, power weapons. Also, all frame rate drops are unacceptable for a halo game during split-split screen or couch co-op. Just dynamically scale the resolution of the game down but whatever happens don’t let the framer dip in a Halo game for the love of all that is holy and good!

My personal gameplay of getting 30 kills in a 4 v. 4 game of team slayer up to 60.

Bungie at that time became the most wonderful bunch of hypocrites in the gaming industry. Knowing this now, gosh the entitlement they felt was out of this world.

Nothing like buying yourself from Microsoft because you don't want to be the Halo Studio anymore, and the FIRST THING you do is sign your next IP over to Activision, for a DECADE, while they are in the middle of ousting the heads of Infinity Ward so they can exert even more control over COD while screwing out the devs at IW...

Should've come as no surprise then that Activision gutted the content of Destiny 1 before launch and was a horrible partner through Destiny 2, until history repeated itself and Bungie had to split from Activision only to wind up in the arms of another major conglomerate that also doesn't know how to handle these unmanageable devs.

Profchaos396d ago

Tti their credit they praised the technical abilities of 343 and I remember at the time thinking halo 4 was a huge graphical leap above reach everything else was rubbish when I actually got to play it but there was no doubt it looked good for the 360 and is probably the best looking game on the system.

But ultimately I think bungie has always had a leadership problem and going independent ultimately proved this it's only getting worse with studio heads being outed by Sony for abuse allegations seems like all bungies past success has been in spite of management not because of it.

But really I think the bungie we have today is not the same one we had in that Xbox era of Bungie

PhillyDonJawn396d ago

I liked the artstyle change. For the most part. Something looked worse but most of everything else looked better. Weapons and vehicles for sure. The wraith come to my mind instantly.
And how can they get mad when the bungie changed it with Halo Reach?

Sciurus_vulgaris395d ago

I know a lot of people dislike Halo 4’s arts style, but there’s thing about it I like and dislike. Personally, the Halo 4 design of Master Chief’s armour is my favourite depiction of the character’s armour.
