Ubisoft did not ‘sacrifice depth’ to put R.U.S.E. on console

'Bringing a real-time strategy franchise to console is, veterans of the genre would tirelessly argue, much like taking a Challenger 2 tank, swapping the L30A1 120mm rifled gun for a champagne cooler, repainting the whole thing cream and using it as a golf kart. Unless, that is, you’re poor old now-defunct Mythic Entertainment, creator of the mighty Halo Wars. Or, apparently, Eugen Systems, the studio behind the deceptively swish and fuss-free R.U.S.E.

Speaking to VideoGamesDaily in an interview this week, Producer Mathieu Girard has insisted that R.U.S.E. is none the worse for its multiplatform credentials. In fact, he reckons the R.U.S.E. team have "basically solved the remaining issue in console strategy gaming".'

This would be a good time for any beta players present to share their thoughts, I reckon...

Letros5787d ago

I played for a few weeks, the title quote is probably accurate, but the game does not have much depth to begin with.

The biggest flaw I felt with this game was the Ruse system in general, it brings far too much RNG to the table, an element that an RTS game should be absent from.

The graphics were quite nice though with excellent use of LOD and motion blur!

dirigiblebill5787d ago

Interesting to hear that you're not too keen on the ruses - I quite like them in principle, but it sounds like in practice they're a bit... overpowered?

Letros5787d ago

No not really overpowered, but I just didn't prefer the style of play for an RTS game(maybe I'm too old school). I don't think it will get poor review scores, it seems quite polished, however I refuse to purchase it no matter what the scores are because of Ubisoft's retarDRM.

Try out the free multiplayer on Steam right now if your PC is up to it, good chance to see how you like it yourself.

dirigiblebill5787d ago

Yeah, I'll give the beta a go myself at some point - time is hard to come by right now...

Incidentally, N4G mods - I've just realised I put 'Mythic Entertainment' in place of 'Ensemble Studios' in the blurb. Whoops. Could somebody edit that?

Apollyn5787d ago

I was rather looking forward too this I'm definitely going to have to try it out on steam. I love a good rts there just seem to be very little around lately.

I didn't care for it. But then again I am more of a CnC/SC type of RTS player.

I thought it lacked a lot of depth and the ruse powers were next to useless.

MostJadedGamer5787d ago

Letros there is no DRM on consoles. So purchase the game for the PS3 or 360.

I haven't played the game yet since I only play consoles games, but as far as I am concerned I will usually trade depth for playability. Though games should be simple to play, and yet hard to master.

I've played the Beta for about 23 hours since it's been live in the last week, and I can tell you right now it's not everyones cup of tea. I can see all the console kiddies hating it, whilst the PC enthusiasts will love it.

Apollyn5787d ago

That sounds promising then rather looking forward to getting home from work now.
End of the day RTS shouldn't be on consoles anyway.

Drjft5787d ago

Yes, and that isn't a "fanboy comment" either. RTS doesn't play well on Console, and this is coming from someone whose played literally every RTS to grace the Xbox 360.

RUSE is a brilliant game, and it's only going to get better once the full build comes out.

MostJadedGamer5787d ago

Actually it shouldn't be on the PC. All games should be on Consoles, and PC gaming should be a thing of the past.

The only reason I am interested in the game is because it is on a console. I hate PC gaming, and at the point where I refuse to play PC games ebcause of all the problems.

Drjft5787d ago

And too anyone that bitches about Ubisoft's DRM, get over it. We're living in the new millenium, and if you can't manage to maintain an internet connection, get that sorted out.

People just always want stuff to whinge about.

Baka-akaB5787d ago (Edited 5787d ago )

Some people know precisely they can't maintain a constant and steady connexion without any say in the matter .

Not every place has a choice between 5 excellent providers . The reality of things is quite different and you know it .

Easily and at least half of usa and europe got meh to mediocre to piss poor connections , and it easily shows in every genre of multiplayer gaming , for both pc and consoles .

Wanna live in the new millenium ? fine , but not with middle ages tools

MostJadedGamer5787d ago

The best way to get that sorted out is just to buy the PS3/360 version so you don't have to worry about all the problems associated with PC gaming.

Ju5787d ago

I'm not a big fan of the demo. But maybe I am just not a good RTS player. Getting old and can't handle a million units at the same time, maybe.

The PC supports the 360 controller. You can play that to get an impression how it would play on the consoles. I don't know. Controller does play too bad, but I don't like neither, neither controller nor mouse (maybe because I got a 27" screen @ 1920x1200 and scrolling with the mouse is a pain because I have to move it across the whole screen ? Why can't I "grab-and-scroll" ?).

Anyway, I probably will still get it - for the PS3 because I want to see how an RTS plays with the move. But that's more of an experiment. It supports multi-touch, too. That would be interesting to try out.

ArchangelMike5787d ago

I hear the PC gamers saying that an RTS game does not belong on consoles. This historically is due to the control scheme whereby a controller has too much input lag when compared to a mouse, and is genrally not as accurate and responsive.

However, enter the PS Move - which offers the same level (if not more) of responsivity and accuracy as does the mouse.

So the argument that RTS games do not belong on consoles hopefully will be obsolete with the the use of the PS Move. We just have to wait and see if Ubi implement it succesfully for the PS3.

(Don't know if they are developing motion controls for Kinect, but could also be intersting if they do).

Apollyn5787d ago

I just can't picture move being any good for rts and the same goes for kinect.
However I'm quite looking forward to playing with multi touch.

I can't sit here and act like I know these workers financial situations. And I'm sure nobody wakes up WANTING to go to court. But for the sake of the industry, I wish some of these types of cases made it to trial.

Settlements allow companies to continue to do whatever abusive practices they do. While the trials (should the company lose) would actually force real changes for the better.

But again, I'm not in these workers shoes and I can understand them not wanting to risk it.
