The Problem With Demos

DamnLag: Developers hate making demos. To them it means making a playable version of an unfinished game, redefining the pacing in order to keep the player engaged, and give it all away for free.

Demos are used to help give players an idea of what the full version of a game will be like. They give the user an opportunity to see what the game is going to play like and what the pros and cons of it are. I think if you play a demo without an open mind you're probably going to judge it on the spot and form your whole opinion on the game from that which is what a lot of people do, which may cost developers, but I still think if companies have the chance to show off even partially what their game is going to be like then they should. I got into the private beta for GoWIII about a year ago (the demo was released on PSN a few months later) and I was blown away by it. But if I never played that demo then I never would have ever even considered trying GoWIII and because of that I decided to try an amazing game.

I disagree about the examples of games that "sell themselves" too, I mean of course games like GTA and MW2 are going to sell themselves, with the incedible amount of advertising and hype behind them they're hardly going to go unnoticed are they?

I love demos. Without Demos, I wouldn't never have bought these wonderful games: Metal Gear Solid 4, Burnout Paradise, DeathSpank, Valkyria Chronicles, , Resistance, Pixel Junk Eden, Darksiders, Mirrors Edge, Infamous.

And if it wasn't for demos I would have bought these crappy games: Dark Void, Wolfenstien, Wanted: Weapons of Fate, and many more.
