CPUs and GPUs: Converging?

Naughty Dog's John Hable "It seems like I constantly hear about how CPUs and GPUs are converging. That CPUs are getting more GPU features, GPUs are getting more CPU features, and that eventually they will converge into one happy processing unit. I disagree, and here’s why."

AMD's Fusion is converging them, but not how the article describes. Fusion will provide a CPU and GPU on one die(an APU), there is no getting away from x86 architecture anytime soon, backwards compatibility is just too crucial.

JsonHenry5790d ago

Nvidia's already got SoC products on the market. (system on chip)

Do a google search for their Tegra line. Mostly used for Mobile devices and tablet PCs.

TABSF5790d ago

Yep the Tegra II has a RISC ARM CPU in it

Like I said in my other comment, I believe the GT 500 or GT 600 series by Nvidia will use a GPU that would not require any CPU on board, ultimately creating a new form-factor

SoC != CPU-GPU convergence, though.

Tegra has a series of dedicated cores on one die, each section has a very specific function. It has 7 or so cores; 1 GPU and 1 (or 2) main Arm11 (or CortexA9) cores. Those cores are loosely tied together but not really "integrated".

That is quite the opposite of what this article is talking about.

"Fusing" GPU+CPU would eventually mean, one decoder, one instruction unit, one memory interface. And that chip would execute a discrete core and visual processing completely transparent on the fly.

That is more like how Pixel and Vertex shaders became universal shaders, now being able to dedicate its function to the task at hand; balancing performance within the chip.

Such a "future" chip would do the same. It would dedicate scalar operations to a generic program, while at the same time run shader code with the remaining units not busy with other tasks.

This is a fundamental shift in how we do computing today.

It would break pretty much every code today. We are so in a stale mate situation, because we have to carry on with legacy application, a legacy operating system and a locked down computer market.

Eventually, it'll happen (must happen, or there simply won't be any innovation).

I would believe these future chips will be fast enough to simply run a current "architecture" in a sandbox.

Software can migrate. Pretty much how Apple did it when they introduced OS-X. They kept older code transparently in a sandbox while using OS-X required a complete re-write.

That's the only way, how this will end. Might take another 10+ years, though.

Windows 15 might do something similar. Run Legacy Windows code in a x86 sandbox, while we need to re-code apps to take advantage of the new architecture at hand. Those chips possibly will have run-time compilers; maybe it's possible to JIT compile legacy code to run it effectively on those CPUs (most likely).

System on chip solutions would do away with the AGP/PCIx bus. That would be nice because it would increase the communication throughput between the two devices. I wonder what the memory control structure will be like concidering that GPUs usually have to communicate with several extrenal DRAMs.

MNicholas5790d ago

The only thing keeping x86 alive are those idiotic CPU benchmarks by computer magazines which are read by equally idiotic readers who believe that paying $500 more for 5% better benchmark is a smart purchasing decision.

The reality is that a 3.2Ghz P4 is more than fast enough for 99% of consumer and business computing needs.

Redempteur5790d ago

isn't it because small business comanies have yet to go forward because they don't need more ? IMO there are still old institution with old networks thus the need for compatibility ...

just saying ( maybe i'm wrong )

Worth reading if your into the PC space. I recomend it.

Cell is the future. I wish I could use cell for mah PC and devs make engines designed for PCs that use cell. Just think about it. All that CPU and GPU power you can get with a PC and RAM PLUS cell...yeah PC would be unstoppable in graphics.

Theonetheonly5790d ago

VERY good at video transcoding. not very good at branch prediction.

meaning todays processors totally rape the cell in terms of throughput in general purpose code.

the cell found its niche in the PC market turns out video conversion involves a lot of Floating point calculation. so they strapped the cell to a card and plugged it into a pc to convert video.

however ATI/Nvidia GPUs have been known for this ability for a while now. nowadays buying a mid grade graphics card will almost triple the conversion speed of the cell converter making it almost pointless to buy.

:p info

Chris_TC5790d ago

That's the point. With GPGPU there is no need for Cell because the GPUs are way faster.

dabri55790d ago

Cell is specifically designed to do certain types of operations. These operations are geared toward heavy number crunching. What is good for one thing, isn't for others. Cell wouldn't run as well as you would expect in a PC.

Vojkan5790d ago (Edited 5790d ago )

I wonder if Sony will choose Cell 2.0 or what ever they name it for their next console, or will they go to AMD or who ever to produce CPU for them....
Something tells me they wont experiment with cell 2.0

dabri55790d ago

Without saying too much, expect the next round of processors to be developed by IBM yet again for both companies.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
