I was an avid FFXI player. I was annoyed as hell with first the influx of console players, and then with the console limitations. But hopefully their thinking ahead this time and making the game as advanced as possible. That way they won't have to add much that the PS3 can dumb down. And please, don't confuse me for a PC or 360 guy. But I do know what held FFXI back and it'll probably happen again.

PS3 is not the lowest. They have to make it for PC users that have middle of the line specs, so they don't shrink their demographic.

I think the developers are just garbage to begin with. There should be no reason why this game is having a hard time fitting. The visuals of this game are mediocre at best.

Huzzah. And the console dumbs down the PC port once again in the Final Fantasy Online franchise. Thank you SE for releasing this on a console. Implying anyone would be silly enough to play an MMO on a console in the first place. You guys better not screw this up and limit the better version like you did last time with Final Fantasy XI.

You people obviously didn't play ffxi. If you did you would know that the ps2 was the downfall of item management due to memory issues. Which will more than likely be a problem 5 years down the road. Disagree all you want but anyone that played ffxi knows this.

@Biggest Bismarck represent! Also playing with consoles doesn't bother me I just wish they weren't gimped to the low memory. Because I imagine once we hit the end we will have several max level jobs with a ton of gear.

They are not talking about dvd/bluray space. Alot is downloaded to the hard drive for mmo's just like ffxi from their servers so this is a non-issue

They are talking RAM.

PS3 = 256, VRAM 256mb
xbox 360 = 256, VRAM 256 Shared + Onboard 10mb Frame Buffer (split for description purposes, 512 altogether)

Total RAM + VRAM
PS3 = 512mb
Xbox 360 = 522mb

the problem is the game is made for pc... a pc game being ported to ps3...
the way the game engine works would be impossible to make it work perfectly with the spu... as long as they reduce stress on graphics card with spus the game should work fine...
but for me if i get it it would be pc version XD

^^lol they may have to build a new engine that maximises the spu's then to be honest that is the only way they will achieve amazing graphics and an open world environment.
the pc architecture is way too reliant on memory/gpu so i am calling it now, dig out that white engine you made SE (before you went multi)

You should note that long before XIII was announced for 360, SE stated that the white engine was a multiplatform engine which was one of the facts that was brought up a ton when people would argue that XIII would eventually go multiplat.

it was also stated that the white engine used 4 of the 6 spus

it was then announced in 07 that it was going cross platform between pc and ps3

and it wasnt until 08 did they announce it was going multiplatform between pc ps3 and 360 and this was when we thought final fantasy 13 was still a ps3 exclusive which was after it was announced

don't even try to bring up specs if you're only gona show one aspect of the RAM chips.

PS3: 256MB GDDR3 @ 700mhz + 256MB XDR @ 3.2GHz
xb360: 512MB GDDR3 @ 700mhz + 10MB eDRAM

When programmed right, especially with a Hard Drive cache set aside, the PS3's RAM alone walks (notice I said "walk") circles around the xb360.

Mine has 6gb DDR3 RAM but I still use my PS3 WAY more. Why? Because PC gaming isn't as fun and isn't as dedicated to gaming. And in reality even though I have a monster PC I still can't achieve graphics better than Uncharted 2 even with the PS3's "limited RAM".

I am pretty sure mostly XBOXers fight about the PC not being a platform. IMO FF online will be a multiplatform release because it is on the PS3 as well as PC.

I also think it is ignorant to imply that the PS3 not being able to preform like a PC means something more than PC hardware upgrades faster than consoles.

Did you read the article? They're having problems cramming the game into the PS3's ram. The 360 has more ram than the PS3 so it wouldn't be a problem on that platform. Not to mention the additional 10MB of cache on the ATI chip.

Doubtful. All this is going to affect is how good the game looks and that has nothing to do with how it runs.

If you go back to Final Fantasy XI for a example. The PS2 and 360 versions graphically look like crap while the PC version run at max looks pretty good. All those run on the same servers(PS2 360 and PC) So this will not affect the ability for the different platforms to play together. If the game is up and running on PS3 you will be playing with PC players as well.

If they were having problems "fitting" anything content/memory related on the PS3, there would be the same if not major problems developing it for the 360 as well.

The fact that SE considered making this game for both next generation consoles and are blaming their difficulties on the PS3 means that their design philosophy is flawed.

At this rate I wouldn't be suprised if SE is disowned from their own country.

I actaully think the news piece is a load of rubish.

Aion runs on the Crysis engine for MMOs.

And this is the thing with ALL MMOs released they run on the hardware that came out 5 to 10 years ago.

Hell a Intel 300 128meg on-board GFX card will run Aion fine, with 15 to 20 FPS AVG across the board.

I've yet to see a top notch looking MMO, it's all low poly objects nothing that will push the hardware too hard, or use up 4gigs of GFX ram.

So I'd say it's all made up, even the PC side won't push a PC hardware as you need people on a MMO and whats the point of making an MMO that only 5 people can play because of hardware needs to be top of the line.

No. If they use the same servers, both PS3 and PC gamers can play together. I use to play FFXI on the PS2, followed by the 360 when my PS2 burnt out and I played on the same server.

Ps3 and xbox has the same amount of ram, ps3 is split , video ram 256, regular ram 256. it would be a problem on both platforms !!

video ram is different than regular ram. You have to make special code on the PS3 to offload tasks to the spu's in order to take advantage of the video ram. While I feel both consoles could handle it, more time needs to be put into the PS3 version in order to compensate and have the game run just as well, thus the delay.

You forget that the PS3 RAM is vastly quicker. The PS3 gets way better performance out of it's RAM, even if it is split, it still annihilates the 360 RAM.

We've performed a few tests on this at work, the PS3 is a monster.

because faster ram is going to boost performance so so much... It all comes down to mostly the power of the gpu, and both consoles arent that powerful and rely on alot of smoke and mirrors that doesnt work so well in an mmo.

While I do agree to some extent with foilage comment on faster ram equals better. In an mmo more ram is better. Look at wow. System requirements are 800 mhz processor, 32 MB GRAPHICS CARD, and 512 mb of SYSTEM RAM. Graphics memory doesn't count for much in an mmo. Thus yes the ps3 system ram is faster, it is not more. You can run applications on 512 mb of ram even if it is slower, but you can not run programs with only 256 mb ram no matter how fast it is. Just think, if it weren't for Cliffy B, X360 would have had only 256 mb of ram, shudders.

Oh and that fast ram the ps3 has, the X360 has the 10 MB of eDRAM which puts the xdr in the ps3 to shame. That memory is so freakin fast, still both fall short to a gaming pc, even a low-mid level gaming rig.

It depends will they make the ps 3 the lead platform then yes the game will probably be a good balance between the gpu and cell. But it seems that the pc is lead platform.

This is a persistent world with evolving characters that I would gladly pay a subscription fee to play. Personally I'm going to get the PC version, as I don't really want to wait to play. I do wish I could get into the Beta however, but I'm patient and it will allow me to focus on other things :D.

Definitely looking forward to this game.

One huge hint to SE use the frigging SPU's!!! no other dev that has worked exclusively with ps3 has had too many problems in creating good open world games on ps3, look at the upcoming infamous2 which boots good graphics for an open world game, I hope it's going to be massive!!
Also remember you can stuff as much memory as you want in a pc, so please don't try and compare ps3 to pc, as soon as you pc can't play games, it's simple just upgrade it and you are ok again, pc architecture is way too memory/gpu reliant...
There is no chance this game will be coming to the 360 at this rate, they had to compress FF XIII so much just to get it to fit on x360, not to mention the resolution was dropped and the textures was worse and the framrate was horrible dropping to low as 20fps on pulse!!

Wait, 1x256 XDR RAM 3.2 Ghz and 1x256 GDDR3 700 Mhz VS 512 GDDR3 700 Mhz.
You are so full of bullshit. The XDR RAM is also 4 a 5 time's faster than GDDR3 RAM.

Also, the PS3 has no specific V-RAM they use all of those type RAM, also the 6x 3.2Ghz SPU can use of some RAM stuff if i not mistakes.

And that 10 MB ED RAM, is nothing compared XDR or GDDR3 RAMS.

yeah... the spus alone with the xdr ram its amazing... xdr ram its not even used now on pc (servers i seen though)... but is way faster than anything... GDDR3 ram...
if devs used the spus full on this wouldnt happen... see killzone 2 uses only 60% of spus.

you're forgetting to factor in the os footprint, the lack of shared memory, and overhead. Most developers actually use about 220mb of ram on the ps3.

each spe has 256 kb of its own memory and the ED ram in the Xenos it's exclusively for anti-aliasing which is quite innovative and the reason of why most X360 multiplat games has x4 MSAA while PS3 only has x2 MSAA or maybe none at all. This is common knowledge you know, but PS3 now has MLAA which is much better than MSAA and it uses less memory... BTW GDDR5 boasts a 7GHz clock speed.

The problem with PS3 memory is that is not shared so devs has a limitation and they need to decide what to put on that 256MB running at 3.2GHZ main memory and what on the other half that it doesn't even has half the speed 256MB GDDR3 video memory. Devs don't have complete control of it like with the X360.

No matter how you see it the arquitecture of the PS3's very complicated. Nobody can start to program on it and have great results in his first try.

Why would they make a MMORPG lead on a console? The majority of people who played XI played on PC. The majority of people who play XIV will play on PC. Their main competition is a PC only game. If they led on the PS3, it would probably lead to a sub par PC port which would leave the majority of its market not interested.

Lots of bad info above. If half of that stuff above was true this articule would not exsist and comparing infamous to a open world or a mmo would be a mistake.

It seems a lot is made out of assumptions with these guy. It's cool to have hope but just know this is the game industry not some new age coding wizards of the lamp make a wish foundation.

Some things can be done and some can not with out lowering others. Ohyeah spus don't equal ram it never has. There are also bandwidth issues with blu ray when compared with other media. The same can be said about the data bus that the cell sits on.

IMO, IDK why MS limit the 360, even with there exclusives. ala splinter cell and alan wake. both are good games, but could've been 720P IMO.

How can you compare an FPS and an MMO? They are architecturally completely different. In an FPS, you can't enter a town with hundreds of other player characters acting independently. Also, you don't have to track thousands of items, skills and effects.

It was originally thought to be a PC-360 game at first, with a possible PS3 version. When it was still called Rapture it was shown running on 360 devkits.

When Microsoft gave them the finger they had no other choice but to go back to Sony, but since PC and PS3 architecture are so different the result was to be expected.

Not that I feel sorry in the slightest, they brought this upon themselves.

This is what they get for not buiding PS3 only titles, they been wasting to much time on other systems, they don't even know how to use the PS3's power.

Their is already alot of MMO's in Japan for the PS3, I don't know why they having so much trouble, anyways I hope they make it look good and all.

This is a simple case of developing on a high end computer then porting to this case.a ps3.now not like sqaure doesnt know these two consoles.so im mad that they now made a excuse saying oh memory not good enough.having that they never made a ff series on both consoles b4.so they no whats wot. they should of planned ahead.developed on cnsole first.then do another for pc.ports is a big issue reason why soo many bugs.so wot means more work so realese games later.at least we get decent game without problems hopfully!!. as i see it yes i agree the ram does suck on both consoles. but high end pc these days we looking into dd3. 1066 upto 2000hz on average of 4gb to 16gb or you can be extreame go above that. with both consoles adding apps on xmb and home witch takes alot of memory.sqaure really should of done it on a console first optamising isnt gonna be good thing as i can see faults or things gonna be cut to scale .BUGS.

5 years of this console generation to realize that they need to OPTIMIZE for specific platforms? way to go.

i really wish Tetsuya Nomura was running the company. HE seems to be the only person at Square-Enix without his head up his ass.

in either case, i'm not picking up FFXIV because i just can't afford an MMO right now, or in the future. i really wanted the DCU Online MMO, but then i found out it's pay to play, so that's off the list.

FFXIV looks really nice, though.

maybe Square-Enix should call in some devs who have developed for the PS3 and know how it works. Level 5 has some experience with getting an MMO type game running on the PS3, and that game, i'm sure, is barely pushing the PS3.

also, i played the DCU Online game at E3, and it was running surprisingly good for being something a good 4 or 5 months away from release.

i have to say out of all of the companies that entered this current gen of hardware, Square-Enix has disappointed me the most. i'm a huge fan of Square, but i've only bought ONE Square-Enix game this ENTIRE generation, and that was Final Fantasy XIII, which i enjoy. FF vs XIII is looking really great, but then again, it's a Nomura game, so i'm expecting great things from it.

'optimizing' the data to fit into less ram really sounds like using less detailed textures to me.. Looks like I'll have to build a top end pc soon :( I can only hope the large delay will mean they're going to make sure nothing is skimped on for the PS3 version.

I really like the PS3's potential... Sony gave it gobs of removable media in blu-ray, stunning visual capabilities, hard drive space, and a super kick-ass processor.

Someone should have fired the person accountable for memory design on the PS3. This choice has made the "state-of-the-art" PS3 into something that only marginally beats the 360 in most comparisons.

Although Sony won't admit it, it is probably the sole reason for mandatory installs, and is the single biggest reason that the PS3 is not dominating this generation.

Just great first the Crapbox 360 was gimping games and now the Psuck3 is gimping games.

This is just further proof that if developers want to create a game without limits, the PC is the ONLY way to go as consoles are so limited.

The PS3 has power but lacks efficiency because of it's crappy ram specs. All this time spent on console programming just takes away from making a game that utilizes the RAW unlimited power of the PC.

I can't wait till next gen when consoles are either DEAD or just flat out PCs with Core i7 cpu's and standard 4gb ram with DX10 or DX11 GDDR5+ Capable GPUs with KB/m

Not only memory but the slow read of bluray also adds to madatory installs. Also the fact that the cell processor is a SINGLE core processor also adds hindrance as most pc games are coded for minimum dual core and many of the newer games are pushing for triple and quad cores. The thing is that you can take a load off by having certain tasks across multiple processors at the same time. Anyone with a decent sense of how a pc architecture works, knows this. Also if the cell was all that why are they not invading pc world if they are indeed that powerful? Why haven't we seen them in tvs and electronics as sony, toshiba and ibm said? The answer is that there are better products out there and only the 2 percent of the pc populace only decode music and video. The rest use it for General Purposes. Ken Kut . . . and the sony team took the cell idea to Steve Jobs when Apple was looking to replace ibm for their processors. Steve Jobs LAUGHED at them and stated that the PowerPC architecture was MUCH better. They would have stayed with ibm but they wanted lower watt processors and ibm wouldn't comply. Thus Intel won the bid.

The PS3 is a great console but MMOs are best with a keyboard and mouse on PC and you damn well know it! Though at least PS3 owners that don't have good PCs have another option if they want to play this game. The same can't be said for 360-only owners. Ahem.

I really miss squaresoft. Good Final fantasy games, secret of evermore, Xenogears, secret of mana, Bushido blade, Einhander, Brave fencer Musashi, Kingdom hearts,the list goes on and on. mow it seems they are more concerned with milking franchises and appealing to the west. Don't they know that the west loved Squaresoft for their eastern style games!!!!

I could be having trouble either way, my PC seemed to score towards the low end from the benchmarking tool, and now there may be issues if I chose the console route, seems like a lose-lose situation to me.
