Kinect: Lag? What lag?

MTV's Dance Central represents everything that makes me wince about Microsoft's Kinect launch line-up. It's garish, child-friendly, audience-friendly, acid-Technicolor, merrymaking nonsense. It's also tediously traditional in premise; an undemanding warm-up for a piece of technology crying out for a knackering, industry-shaking workout.

But - and this is all-important - it's frighteningly accurate and shockingly responsive. And here's the big bombshell: The same can be said for all of the Kinect debut titles.

.. Now I don't know what to think. I've just read a Preview on Joy Ride and the writer was constantly talking about how the controls weren't being read properly, and now an article on how there isn't ANY lag...

Quite frankly, I don't know what on Earth is going on...

DelbertGrady5780d ago

I guess we'll have to wait until November until we know if it's up to par or not.

rockleex5780d ago

The kind of lag that you'd have to hide by hiring a circus.

The kind of lag where you need to show pre-recorded videos.

Conloles5780d ago

Yawn can this and Move fail already

strickers5780d ago

Might be at Eurogamer show in October.I'd like to have a go on it.I'm not at all impressed so far and in tech terms I don't see it being physically possible to match Move with the tech it's using.

NewZealander5779d ago

consoles, you failed already, we get it you dont like consoles, go play your pc and shut it.

BISHOP-BRASIL5779d ago

Too bad it looks like your on screen character in Just Dance don't follow your moves, it's you that mimic it.

Just like in Guitar Hero you play with the track and the score-metter-thing, you don't play the music, it's there to make you know the rhythm, you follow the music, the music don't follow your input. To create the illusion of playing the actual music the game will sound an odd note briefely after you hit a wrong buttom.

The character animation in Just Dance is pre scripted, just like the song in GH or RB. Probably it will even have a fail (odd note like) movement that will also be a pre scripted animation.

From the E3 demo and impression it appears that the game will only roll a track with movement indication and (try to) track if you are doing it right to increase or decrease your score accordly. You can't easily identify lag in an input that only affect an always changing score.

All i've seen so far is a bunch of QTE games.
Kinect is not tracking the body, it's sort of "guessing" your moves and the game displays the QTE on the screen. I don't know how to explain it but that is not body tracking.

BrutallyBlunt5780d ago

Really? So Your Shape Fitness doesn't track your body? News to me.

It's not even debatable, there are lots of those who frequent forums who are naturally pessimistic by nature. Many seem to flock to negativity. I'm not sure why. Is it fear of change? Is it fear of competition? Jealousy? Have people forgotten how to have fun?

What I have seen so far from all the videos is one thing in common and that is those who actually played Kinect enjoyed it. So it's easy for all the rest of us to be critical sitting on our computer chairs trying to analyze the situation.

I myself think it's great Microsoft is going in a completely different direction here. They already have their core audience who likes shooters and more serious games so why not branch out that audience? It's not like they will force Kinect in games like Gears of War. Some games will work with Kinect and some won't. I think those that will will be the ones made entirely for Kinect and none of us have any idea what that is since it takes time to create such games.

People sure were flocking here 2 years ago throwing shit at the PS3. Remember that? Did you care back then?

"What I have seen so far from all the videos is one thing in common and that is those who actually played Kinect enjoyed it. So it's easy for all the rest of us to be critical sitting on our computer chairs trying to analyze the situation."

How many people have you seen playing in their homes all by themselves instead of in front of a camera in public where there's people around?

"I myself think it's great Microsoft is going in a completely different direction here."

Why? You have stock or do you play games? X360 has been a hc-console like forever so Kinect is a one big FU to the entire install base as long as gaming is concerned. If you own stock then I can understand you wanting MS to spread their audience leaving their install base high and dry.

"They already have their core audience who likes shooters and more serious games so why not branch out that audience? "It's not like they will force Kinect in games like Gears of War. Some games will work with Kinect and some won't."

No they won't force Kinect on people. They simply forget their fanbase and run off to the green fields of casual gamers with your money. You already bought the system so no need to give you more games right?

"I think those that will will be the ones made entirely for Kinect and none of us have any idea what that is since it takes time to create such games. "

Well MS themselves said that Kinect will have a minimum of 150 ms of lag iirc.

look up any youtube video

stuna15780d ago

Because the focus is shifted toward playing the game it'self! Your moreso distracted in playing the game, with the constant movement, that the brain is already preoccupied with your actions. Has anyone ever heard the saying "You have a one track mind"? This is a perfect example of it. It's actually genius, if you think about it! Take away your ability to multitask through the physical exertion. That's why the person not playing notices the lag, while the person playing doesn't notice the lag, and also probably the reason why the launch titles for kinect are for the most part physically demanding.

Inside_out5780d ago (Edited 5780d ago )

This holiday M$ will sell all the Kinect devices and 360's it can manufacture. Sony knows this and has begun slapping it's engineers to come up with thier own 3D ( but, but the eye toy...lol ) mapping camera so they can be cool like M$...They better hurry Sony, Kinect drops in November.

As for the lag...Now pay attention at :34 when kinect maps the kids motion PERFECTLY...killer app indeed.

lol
Are you referring to what it captures but doesn't give any points for?
The breakdance?

exnihilonihilfit5780d ago

How retarded do you have to be? That's not mapping him at all, it's just showing a video of him. Notice how the people who are playing clearly already know all of the dance moves, so it appears as though they are 1 to 1 when they aren't. The game shows no error tracking. When I see someone make a realtime error while playing this game and see that show up on screen, then I'll believe that its working.

Kinnect videos are clearly fake because they never show what happens when you fail. If there's no possibility of failure, it's not a game.

its C&VG they are pro MS so you cannot believe this article nearly all the reviewers are saying there is alot of lag so i believe the majority not a minority.

ps even if there is no lag imo it still is not going to be that great you will not have the accuracy that sony's Move will have and who wants to jump around and wave your arms all the time to play a game when i get home from work i for one do not want to jump around ect i want to sit down and play and most people are the same.

waltyftm5780d ago

butterfinger5780d ago

First of all, there are no "reviewers", because the final product has yet to be issued. If you want to base your entire opinion on a product on PREviews of the unfinished model, then go right ahead. You are free to spend your money however you like, but for you to come in here and just flat out lie about other websites is absolutely pathetic. Sometimes I seriously wonder if Sony is paying some of you guys to spread your BS.

Lag and not being about to read gestures properly are two different things....

Chubear5780d ago (Edited 5780d ago )

Damn, this is how MS is successfull at their BS marketing ploys.

MS gives incentives to media outlets to promote (deceive) the general public that are not very informed bout certain products but YOU who use gaming forums a lot and have seen numerous interviews and vids of the product should know better but becuase of sheep mentality you get confused when some media outlet tells you something different from what your own eyes see.

Media outlets that MS has essentially put in their pocket will lie to you. The others that MS didn't "deal" with will likely tell you as it is.

Natal is a scam being used to see if MS can have the success of the wii of 60mill sold w/ the uniformed public so their shareholders can allow funding for an xbox3 in the future. If natal fails to do wii numbers then no xbox3.... there will be no xbox3, why? cause natal ain't doing wii like numbeers.

They'll find a millions of suckers for sure ofcourse but no way natal helps push an extra 40mill xbox360s.

Wake up people, it's a scam.

wages of sin5780d ago

@chubear,
Can you provide links to actual proof that what you say is true, that Microsoft is behind this?

If you can, can you also prove that MS is the only company out of the big three that does this?

By your logic, I'm not supposed to believe MS or any gaming news sites because if it's positive about MS, it must be a "paid incentive" but some random video from an anonymous "gamer", that's ok to trust.

If Kinect is a scam as you say it is, then does that make Move a scam as well? Especially since it apes the Wii WAY more so than Kinect ever will.

The only thing that gamers need awakening to are hateful (for no damn reason) fanboys who sit up in the echo chamber of n4g talking trash instead of gaming. Pathetic.

Lord_Doggington5780d ago

"But the kit works. Like, really works. It's much more than a shonky Eye-Toy - and fears of lag have been wildly overplayed. Believers in Kinect's long-term potential for providing unconventional, breakthrough experiences finally have something to smile about."

And this:

"Because of bloody Kinect, that's why. Cuddly, snuggly, caressible Kinect. Fun for all the family - unless your family contains a self-aware, asymmetrical male with a natural aversion to campy limbering."

That's goddamn right...

Christopher5780d ago (Edited 5780d ago )

"Remember those leaked videos showing the horrible latency of Kinect Adventure's Rally Ball; Jonathan Ross swiping what seemed like seconds before his on-screen avatar did the same?

Forget them - each and every limb flick or gesture I pull is represented on the TV in front of me with no perceptible delay. Heck, the experience of kicking the rubber spheres in the title even feels cutting edge - if only fleetingly. River Rush is the same - my gangly hopping and leaning instantly affecting the in-game action."

See this is why i say wait until it has been released, it will likely get even better closer to release. Kinect is certainly looking that it will deliver, all it needs now is a price under £100 and it will be a massive win.

Edit: Funny how the majority of the replies I get have nothing to do with what I actually wrote, you guys are so fearful of Kinect all you can do is just use personal attacks and disagrees, must really hurt you guys that im right.

If this is his honest opinion, than there must be differences how people experience Kinect. Can be in the environment or the person itself. Maybe some "shapes" are easier to track than others. Maybe it depends how clearly the camera can track the body. It's kind of weird that people report so differently.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio12d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing12d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit12d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing12d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay14d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn214d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn214d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown14d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay14d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay14d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac13d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger14d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300014d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde14d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde14d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Reaper22_13d ago

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
