Half-Ass Gaming: Crackdown 2 Review

Kevin Jones writes: "Crackdown was a refreshing take on the open world scene when it was first released back in 2007. It introduced players to a world of superhuman cops versus criminals. It was in a league of its own and still is one of the most underrated games of this generation. Now after 3 years there is finally a sequel to this game, but does it do the series justice and improve over the original?"

i predict approval within 10 minutes, meanwhile the 3 page review giving it a 9 sat in pending all afternoon.

Army_of_Darkness5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

I'm running out of sh1t to say about this "Crapfound 2" game...

I think IGN gave that psn game Family feud the same score as this! Hahhaha! 7.5/10 I think?! ahhhh... Gotta luv' these 360 exclusives;)

Focker-4205802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

The majority of the reviews are lower than a 7. I don't wanna read a 3 page review about a game thats basically the exact same as the original. I'll believe the majority, not the 'paid off' minority.

D4RkNIKON5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

The graphics are horrific. Hope the game has stellar gameplay to make up for it.

absolutecarnage5802d ago

i don't know what world you live live in and trust me its not the real world most of the reviews were 7 or higher not lower

callahan095802d ago

@AbsoluteCarnage,

More accurately, most reviews are 7 and lower. On Metacritic right now, there are 27 scores above 7, and 43 at 7 and below.

Pandemic5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Even Toy Story 3 - the game based on a movie (which everyone knows doesn't turn out well) got a better score... :S

bjornbear5801d ago

not only is Toy Story 3 one of the best rated pixar games ever, the franchise has ALWAYS been great for videogames (remember toy story for Genesis?! AMAZING)

+ this is a 360 exclusive, toy story isn't =/

lets just compare it to what it SHOULD be compared to...the 1st crackdown, and then yes, its visible they were HALF ASSED in development.

HolyOrangeCows5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Oh yeah, because a long review is an automatic good review, right?
The review average is 7/10, stop whining about one 9/10 review not getting approval.

Besides, the missions are definitively worse than in the first game, the graphics are worse, and it has all of the problems from the first game and more (Including lock-on issues...I mean, the controls; KINDA important). Don't even PRETEND that it's a 9/10 game.

"how many of you bought the first crackdown to play crackdown and not to get the Halo 3 beta code? come on hands up don't be shy your mom wasn't"
Couldn't I have bought it for both? Because I did.

DelbertGrady5802d ago

At least it's not as bad as SOCOM, which sits at 67.38%.

It's around the same average as MAG. Must be complete garbage then, right?

BiggCMan5802d ago

if every critic reviewed socom for what it is now. they would all average out to a 9, i guarantee it. no score would be lower than an 8.

HolyOrangeCows5802d ago

For starters, I didn't call a 7/10 "garbage"
Didn't even call it "bad"
And don't pull the MAG card. Most reviewers pulled the "generic" card, completely different from the boring mission structure, control issues, etc of Crackdown 2.

"At least SOCOM isn't as bad as Two Worlds"
"At least Two worlds isn't as bad as _____"
"At least ______ isn't as bad as ____ ____"
See how this weak argument could go on for ever, having no real relevance to Crackdown 2's problems, anyway?
Besides, that argument would end with FREAKING YARIS. I would win by default, silly.

pixelsword5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

"At least it's not as bad as SOCOM, which sits at 67.38%.

I don't care about the average, the overall consensus that I'm hearing is that SOCOM and MAG is better than Crackdown 2. It's everyone's choice in the end, but if you want to bring other people in your thought process, then there you go.

Why o why5802d ago

well, your brethren called MAG, trash as they did socom so according to 'them' this is trashier.....Like HolyOrangeCows implied..deflecting onto other games isnt really relevant to this games issues.

bjornbear5801d ago

why the HELL do you kids always bring up MAG? or WKC?

let me run through it to you:

a) BOTH those "weaker" PS3 games are NEW IP's
b) MAG is a ONLINE ONLY game, a VERY complicated sort of game to review fairly
c) WKC over all was weak because it was a year old game "shoved" onto the west from Japan.

Crackdown 2 =

a) SEQUEL (thus should be BETTER than the first)
b) has single player (so DON'T compare an ONLINE ONLY game to a game with single player)

thus, bringing in OTHER games just to prove a point isn't only pathetic, its wrong, unfounded and a completely misguided argument on your part.

im sorry your favored console exclusives are not meeting the high expectations of what exclusives should be, but don't take it out on COMPLETELY different games.

maybe you should use INFAMOUS as an example since its similar to crackdown in almost anyway...oh but wait, infamous is better scored than crackdown 1 AND 2...forget it then =/

Well it just goes to show that people are more interested in WATCHING reviews as opposed to reading them. I am one of those..

Cajun Chicken5802d ago

I seriously didn't believe it. But judging from this video, (if it's unaltered...) Crackdown 1 does look like it has better graphics and lighting...What gives?!?

Perjoss5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

at some dev studios there is usually more than 1 project going on, the best people cant be on 2 projects at once. It happens all the time where i work.

halfassgaming5802d ago

Completely unaltered, I went back and put in the older Crackdown to see what the differences were.

SOAD5802d ago (Edited 5802d ago )

Maybe Realtime Studios refused to lend the assets of the first game to Ruffian, thus forcing Ruffian to re-create the game environment in 8 months of development time.

Or maybe Ruffian downgraded the graphics to accommodate 16 player online. Regardless, the game could have and should have looked much better than this.

Grand Theft Auto IV running on 360 with much more shit happening, more NPCs, better explosions, and much better graphics proves to me that this is not a hardware problem, this is a developer problem.

bviperz5802d ago

Developers indeed. These get rich quick development joints are getting old. And they ain't limited to size of the company or development time. Publishers need to recognize we gamers pay $60 expecting GAMES not APPS. Exaggeration, but you get the point.

LordStig5802d ago

how many of you bought the first crackdown to play crackdown and not to get the Halo 3 beta code? come on hands up don't be shy your mom wasn't.

T9X695802d ago

I did, because I don't like Halo. Crackdown was a great game.

Cajun Chicken5802d ago

I did. Got my Crackdown secondhand. Actually partly traded Forza 2 for it, got told by a mate that I'd enjoy it.

RXL5802d ago

i watched this review due to the name of the website alone..lmao@halfassgaming

dope

but yea...he reviewed the game and i felt he was unbiased and pretty much gave his solid opinion..

ill rent this before i buy it now.

APOFISBORICUA5802d ago

A C for Crackdown 2 is just overrated.

PEACE AND GAMING!!

Looking Back to 2010 with Crackdown 2 - Agent of Mayhem

Darren writes: "“XBOX NEEDS EXCLUSIVES!”. Sound familiar? It’s something that has been ringing in my ears since becoming an Xbox gamer nearly 20 years ago. It’s possibly the longest standing and harshest criticism levelled against Microsoft’s console family, and I can’t say I wholly disagree. However, there are some out there which can slip through the net every now and then. But bucking the trend was the original Crackdown, which was not one of them. It shifted a very healthy amount of units as well as drawing in universal praise from critics. A sequel then, would be a no-brainer."

It was basically crackdown 1 with zombies, was fun but corners were cut, solid game though.

Minute Man 7212154d ago

I'm still playing this, activating the beacons is a pain in the ass

IRetrouk2154d ago

Collecting those orbs and upgrading your character were addictive, it was just a shame they played it safe instead of going all out, didnt take anything away from how fun the game is though.

Crackdown 1 was one of the underrated gems of last gen. I loved that game. Crackdown 2 was crackdown 1 with added zombies and gave the map a paint job. Disappointing, but still enjoyed it for what it was with the added wingsuit, toybox mode and 4 player co-op. Crackdown 3 was basically what Crackdown 2 should have been.

2 of the weakest graphical games

b163o12235d ago

Oh come on man, Out of all the games under M$.....really

King_Noctis2235d ago

Free is free. They could have done nothing and no one would have said anything.

So what’s the problem again?

xX-oldboy-Xx2235d ago

Sometimes it's better to do nothing, like in this case.

Or are they buttering people up for an xsx version of Crackdown 3? Re-Cracked perhaps?

King_Noctis2235d ago (Edited 2235d ago )

So let me get this straight, you think they are wrong for giving out free games to gamers?Do they force you to download the game? Are the free games expired after a set amount of time? Do they force people to buy an SX version of the game if it comes out?

You know I have seen many stupid comments over the year on this site, and yours is nearly on the top of that list, no offense.

xX-oldboy-Xx2234d ago

No they're not wrong - have at it. Just not a very worthwhile gesture. The games are old, average at best going by people's comments.

Have a crack mate, don't hold back - you couldn't upset or offend me if you tried.

And if you didn't pick up, the second part of my comment was in jest. But you lit are very defensive about ms and their pro-consumer attitude these days.

Lighten up champ - gonna be a long gen ahead haha

Casepb2236d ago

Crackdown 1 was always free.

isarai2236d ago

Yeah this, grabbed it like two years ago. Wish there was a way to play the X-enhanced version on PC

Stay at home initiative? Not everyone has Gamepass.

Ulf2236d ago

Crackdown 1 was a *great* game.

franwex2236d ago

Crackdown 1 was fun 13 years ago. Somewhat still fun today

Crackdown 2 sucks.

Crackdown 3 is like Crackdown 1, but with better graphics.

Play Crackdown 3. It’s a fun weekend game.

DARK_WOLF2235d ago

Crackdown 3 shouldv never existed. Of all the games microsoft couldve poured money into making they chose this.

Simply as a marketing game to show off their 'cloud' tech. Sure wasnt made for xbox fans but they tried to shove it down our throats for 5 years regardless.

No thanks.

Kribwalker2235d ago

agreed. crackdown 3 was a fun quick romp

Godmars2902235d ago

@DARK_WOLF:
CD3 exists as an attempt to showcase a version of cloud supported gaming. That said version fell apart is besides the point.

hamburgerhill2235d ago

I wish they would have just done a Crackdown 1 remake with extras instead of Crackdown 3. All those years wasted on a game that for me felt like anything but crack down.

Can’t complain about free games

Still hate what happened with Crackdown 3 though
